Ghostly critters from the deep sea: Stygiomedusa gigantea

- Опубликовано: 26 авг 2024
- Stygiomedusa gigantea is one of the largest invertebrate predators known in the ocean, yet little is understood about its ecology and behavior. Stygiomedusa lacks tentacles, but has four extraordinarily large oral arms that are presumably used to envelope prey. The swimming bell of this spectacular medusa can reach over one meter across with arms over ten meters long.
A symbiotic relationship between Stygiomedusa and the fish, Thalassobathia pelagica, was confirmed in 2003 when scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) filmed the pair swimming together in the Gulf of California. The fish has adapted to using the medusa as a hiding place in its open ocean habitat.
In twenty-seven years of scientific ROV surveys, researchers at MBARI have been lucky enough to observe this rare animal seven times, from depths of 750 meters down to 2187 meters.

It's critters like this that I really want to see in the game Subnautica; really weird and freaky-looking things that aren't necessarily harmful to the player but just amazing to look at.
Reefbacks and Sea Threaders, Glow Whales, and other stuff
i wanna see em in ark!

What the hell
Simply sublime; it's every dream and every nightmare permanently bound!
Mad Hatter that is true
So mysterious and docile yet I wield my doubts nonetheless
Nicely put.
Possibly one of the most hauntingly beautiful creatures I have ever seen.
It is mesmerising to watch.
Indeed!
Wow. It looks enormous. As always thanks for your incredible insights to an alien world! Still one of the most valuable channels on RUclips!
Lewis E. Yeah they’re big, I believe the biggest one is 32 feet
Some can be the size of 1-4 sedans
This creature is majestic!
James Edelson Majestic, rare and huge
A new sighting of this creature appeared just under a month ago or so! Absolutely fascinating and utterly gorgeous, I bet seeing one in person would be incredible.
Yea, they made that video too

@@JNL37Dyxce5 Why the fuck would you link that. Totally unrelated and stupid. Fuck birds, jellies are where it’s at.
On one hand, certainly not the expected video, but on the other, sea and sky critters
@@jonathangerbino2621 Nah man, fuck birds. They aren’t real.
Good god these these things are massive .-. can only imagine how big they truly look when seeing them in person
+Katy Gilday
it's longer than a snake
Gonna be sort of hard to see it in person, several thousand feet down where it lives.
Seen one of those things dragged up on a fishing trawler. It was severely damaged, but mostly intact. It is absolutely huge. The bell was about as big as the lid to a child's sandbox, deep cuts from the net that made it look even scarier. One of the arms survived. About as long as your average ambulance bus, maybe slightly longer. They pull all sorts of crap up from the ocean.
FedorovAvtomat Did the jellyfish survive?
0:46 looks like an angel in robes crying but with a big jellyfish head
Holy shit, a preacher, even here.
nah, it's dabbing
A bonnet, maybe?
I'm sad so many people find this jelly scary, they don't even have tentacles. I'd love to see one in person someday, I think it's really pretty!
@@TheFalseShepphard well, God did not intend for humans to ever touch it...the Creator gave us land nature to grope all over 😂😂😂

@@CandiceGoddard I kick tiger nuts all the time. You just have to take a slow person with you.
I wouldn't hug that pretty thing
I always felt they looked like the ghostly images of women in black dresses. I can imagine all the old lore about them from sailors that didn't know what they were looking at. If I saw this in the water by my ship I know I'd probably think it was the lost soul of some poor woman.
It is an extreme deep sea creature and can only live under extreme water pressure . It can not come up to the surface of the ocean; because of lack of water pressure it would certainly die.
So there is no way it was ever spotted by any sailors.
Naah! You're just horny...

@@BrennaDraws Naah... Just overkidding about an overdramatic comment.
Like our friend posted above, there is almost any possibility at all that acient sailors could spot an animal who live so deep.
By the way... seeing the imagine of a woman in dress... in what It looks like nothing but a mushroom with tentacles... i bet that poor sailors had to be very horny at least 👌
But... weren't sailors IN-famous for that? 🤔
Veil dancers! I love that not only is there technology now to photograph and discover the deep dwellers, but also that these images are so generously shared with us. Thank you!
WOW, that is just amazing! I can't get over how huge it's "arms" are! Thank you so much for posting these videos -- I find the ocean to be fascinating but I live land-locked in western Canada, so I get my fill of all things ocean-related on RUclips. Your videos are always among the most interesting on all of RUclips. Thank you *so much* all for the research you're doing AND for sharing it with the world!
our planet inhabits some of the most unbelievable gorgeous creatures! we know sooo little about our oceans it's tempting to find out more! i hope we manage to preserve this beautiful ecosystem
we have more knowledge and info about deep space than our own underwater ecosystem it is kind of scary to think what could be way down there...and tbh nobody knows ..yes. it would be interesting to be able to look and learn Everything
I find jellyfish incredibly fascinating and love learning about them but at the same time they unnerve me something fierce.
my god! finally I found a channel that focus in deep sea! my god! thanks so much for this!!! We know more from the moon than the deep sea! thanks thanks thanks!!!

Yay, a new video! =D Pleasepleaseplease upload more often, guys.
I've left marine biology for quite some time now. Your videos are the only things that remind me of the alluring mystery of the ocean and the reason why I love it so much.
Regards from Malaysia.
the shot at 2:31 is so eerily beautiful. this planet is truly fascinating
Sometimes I wonder why jellyfish aren't called stingy tentacle water mushrooms
That's a tad bit long and hard to say. It could be shortened down to stenwamush tho
What a cool looking animal!! Thank you for putting this footage together and giving some background about it
*Scary and wonderful at same time*
My eyes: Stygiomedusa gigantea
My brain: Stygiomedusa gigantea
My mouth: Gigantic stegosaurus
It looks like she's floating in the night sky, it's beautiful
It looks simply divine! Such beauty
I love how their arms look like blankets. So freaky and beautiful.
Its one of the most majestic sea creatures ive seen. The tentacles are smooth like silk and that velvety black colour
It looks like a haunting phantom.... imagine this thing floating around in the halls of your house
I have had dreams/nightmares where deep sea creatures were floating around in the air randomly one especially scared me there were cubes of water like tanks but without walls..and inside were barracuda and they started to swim thru the air super fast...like, dart down hallways etc. yeah that would be pretty messed up= walking down a street and suddenly giant jellies are bobbing around in the sky
Imagine being lost in the abyss and getting tangled into this thing.
Imagination is all that can ever be...biology stops us from crossing paths with it...technology changes that tho😥
@@josephtaylor-kennedy1420 a piece of metal that had no thought then became a stop sign.
Youd be dead before you can get at that depth.
I don't know what I looked up for this to pop up on my recommended but this was very cool- those arms are insane
What a beautiful creature!!!
Beautiful and scary at the same time !
She's very regal and elegant!!
These and other similar jellies always remind me of nebulas in space.
if that thing got tangled to my feet while swimming i'd drown myself
Good thing you're probably dead when that happens, since you'd be in the deep sea.
"Frillish, the floating Pokémon.
They paralyse prey with poison, then drag them down to their lairs, five miles below the surface."
Inkea use Psybeam!
Why did I read this in the Pokedex voice?
The fact that it looks the same to Stygiomedusa Gigantea and also a Ghost/Water type
it looks like mismagius too
I believe at the scene of 0:17 you can see the Thalassobathia swimming near the Stygiomedusa Gigantea at the left but you have to look very close. It may just be another type of animal though.
The underside/inside reminds me of the underside of some mushrooms/fungus. Wicked cool 😍
Just imagine if we can see every creature that's down there😳
This beauty is rapidly becoming one of my favorite ocean organisms.
I was taken back by how stunning the creature was when I 1st viewed a couple weeks ago °~.☆.~°
Wow this creature is majestic, mysterious, and terrifying
The lack of perspective in the open ocean makes it difficult to really comprehend how large ocean animals truly are.
it somehow is less scary knowing it keeps little fish as pets
My new favorite sea creature
These videos are incredible!
The adaption to camouflage and avoid predators allows the assumption that this creature is incredibly old, as a lot of well-camouflaged undersea animals are smaller, or have some sort of common competitor or danger. Perhaps it gained its colouring when there were much, much larger predators in the ocean.
(Sorry if this is inaccurate, I'm a 10th grader, my knowledge is pretty limited)
that’s so gorgeous
Gorgeous, it’s like an aerial silk dancer
The deep sea has to be either the most chaotic or the most peaceful place on earth. I can't decide which.
Science is always fascinating.
Nice font choice in the beginning! lol
Beautiful and haunting, I love it!
Greatly enjoyed this video and narration. Laughed at the ending bit. Thanks MBARI! Subbed
I have never wanted to get enveloped by a jellyfish as much as i have wanted to when i saw this.
It looks so elegant
All life is beautiful, thanks for sharing these views of beautiful animals..
Incroyable!

Interestingly 'medusa' is what jellyfish in general are referred to in Russian
it's their Latin names I believe
@@izzyjones7108 thats interesting, i didnt know that
Majestic! A jelly is a jelly, even in a dream!
ahh this is the coolest institution channel
Life is everywhere, in every environmental niche--& these, in particular, are awe-inspiring!!!
How is it that some humans, even knowing these things, are sure that our planet is the ONLY place in the universe where life exists?
One of my biology professors in college actually made that claim in front of the whole class...& you could hear our collective jaws, all hitting the floor in unison, a couple of light-years away.
(A Martian, who was in a position to know, told me that.👀)
Its like a dementor. Hauntingly beautiful
You was way ahead of your time 😊 Fantastic video
Man i need so much more footage of deep sea fish
What a beautiful nightmare

This used to be called stygiomedusa FABULOSO and i think we should change it back….
Tell me this isn't Jean Jacket from NOPE?
There was one person who watched it dance all days, all nights, all years...
and one day he turned into that fish.
awww it has a buddy!
why put scarry and creepy background music? This jellyfish is so beautiful and elegant, you could put a classical music there instead
You guys such make more SPOOKY videos even if the animals aren’t inherently scary. It’s just such an enjoyable mood that makes me want to watch this in my dark room which in my opinion, is really fitting.
Thought it wasn’t that big at first before I looked up their general size, and compared to a human. Yikes on kites
Something crazy about this.
This mindless jellyfish works with another species to live together and yet us humans cant do the same between us
Guys voice literally made me fall asleep 😁
these are great thanks
I thought the thumbnail was a photoshopped night sky with an alien, then I read the title and was blown away
