I'm moving to LA from Houston, for one reason: the weather. Houston heat/humidity is unlivable. My current destination city is San Clemente. I know it's a long way from the rest of LA, but I'm 63 and retired. But, if I can find a home more centrally located, and comparably priced to San Clemente, then I'll grab it. My budget is $1,500,000.
San Clemente is a great choice. There's some great beaches around there and it's less hectic compared to "central" LA. You'll still be near a ton of amenties.
So why not try any other warm climate that is far cheaper and a better quality of life? Why dump all your money into California? That does absolutely nothing with taxes.
I moved from LA to Dallas back in 08. I grew up in South Central so my path wasn't too bright. I left to start fresh. I tell anyone if you can afford to live in LA in a nice area, have a good job, it's worth it. Some ppl hate Texas and I love it. So it just depends. But I love LA weather, beaches, mountains, food, etc. I love visiting as a tourist. It's for sure a good time! LA will always be home.

It's refreshing and new to hear someone from NYC who doesn't go on their trite, and expected diatribe of how much "better" everything and anything is in New York. Seriously, people from NYC all sound the same about L.A., I always know what is going to come out of their mouth. @@jaycarter4682I would do as much as you can to build that business before you make the jump. I moved there in 2018 to do music and I didn’t get to the point to where I got a lot of traction until 2021. I think people want to move there because of the network etc (exactly why I did) but don’t think about the groundwork to get their creative business off the ground and making money. It’s a very expensive city to try and do that in because your cost of living is so high it becomes difficult to set aside money to invest back into your business. I think it’s a better idea to build in a more affordable city and then move there a few years later to take your creative business to the next level.
Well i think the point is all the positives of NYC are to due with the city itself. Geographically, its a flat swampie area. All the LA positives are the weather, beach-mountain etc...less to do with the actual uniqueness of the city itself.

I live in Mar Vista and run a rental housing business. I try not to raise rent on my tenants but the way LA’s economy is going, I had to raise rent 4% every year since 2022. Inflation is definitely hurting everyone, including landlords. If anyone out there thinking about moving to LA with a budget, your best bet is to start out by renting a room from a family that has a house for the first couple of years until you make enough money to get an apartment of your own. Renting a room will be much cheaper and you will save money and often you will find that family homes give you that privacy that everyone is looking for.
Los Angeles is a place to make your fortune, mind blowing money and opportunity, but you have to be confident, good at selling yourself, and motivated. If you are, Los Angeles can be a dream. LA has a buzz, an excitement, a creative energy that makes everyday interesting and fun. The geography & nature is amazing and the best weather anywhere. I can go snow skiing at Big Bear (outside LA) in the morning and surfing at Malibu in the afternoon, its like nowhere else in the world. If you believe in yourself, LA as a $1.4 Trillion dollar economy (larger than 46 states) has all the riches you could ever want. It's expensive, but you make ALOT more money than places like FL or TX. Do not move here with the mindset of a tourist, move here ready to work HARD, and you will be rewarded! LA has all the opportunity in the world, it just depends on you. Its not a city for dreamers, but it certainly is a city for those who work hard. I wouldnt be here if it wasn't advantageous and honestly wouldn't live anywhere else. Nothing compares to LA. 💯
@@EveryDay420-i9x Waiting tables for sure. At a nice place, you can make ALOT. I had family in from out of state, took them up to Yamashiro in the hills above Hollywood (amazing views of LA), the bill was $455, I tipped $125 for 20%. Do a few of those nightly and walk away with $400-500 a night. The easiest way to make some good money quickly is to wait tables. Some go from waiting tables to tending bar which is lucrative too as you cultivate your passion, but yea waiting tables is good quick money in any city.
Michael this video is so on point! I moved here in May 2021 close to your timeframe here too, and everything is so accurate! Even tho I’m from NY and lived in WI, WA (Seattle), then made move down from Seattle to LA, the rent prices and grocery store prices weren’t too different in 2021 to adjust to, however it is frustrating seeing inflation rise and small things like late night spots closing early (I’m a night owl!) So I truly appreciated every detail in this video! The people need to know! ❤

LA is an awesome place to visit. All the different cities make it so interesting. I loved Manhattan Beach, Malibu, BH even Compton, South Central. Griffith Park is amazing.

Enjoy ur channel As someone born and raised in North Carolina but has lived in Los Angeles in 2018 and 2023 there’s definitely a big difference. The club scene listennnn it used to pop yall just had to be there it was vibe. All imma say now is the West Hollywood clubs be careful. Finding (friends) for me was easy because I lived in the valley and you’ll find more natives there I learned tho stay away from people in the industry they’ll snake u quick asfl. I definitely agree with u on the homeless, and traffic situation. Used public transit and the red line is a scary place. The video was beautifully made with the transitions between sceneries and lil clips throughout the video.
Great video! My partner and I recently visited LA, and we were pleasantly surprised by how much safer we felt compared to where we currently live, which is Atlanta. The people we encountered were genuinely friendly, which left a positive impression on us. Honestly, our trip to LA restored a lot of our hope in humanity. As for the homelessness situation, while it's definitely present, we found the individuals there to be far less aggressive than those we typically encounter in Atlanta. Overall, LA gave us such a laid-back, chill vibe-especially in Downtown, which really caught us by surprise!
I went to GSU, so I've spent a lot of time in literal downtown Atlanta at all times of day and year. I'd rather be in downtown LA 90% of the time, for sure.
Lived in San Gabriel Valley my entire life. It's a constant struggle for me. Trying to figure out if I should go rent a luxury apartment in a nice area or keep saving to buy a mediocre townhome out in the boondocks since that's all we could (barely) afford lol. Great video.
I moved here in 2017 and it was super fun to go out and meet new people but all of the meeting people was majorly superficial. It never felt like you made true friends. But I don't go out much anymore because A) Im not as young as I used to be lol. B)its super expensive to go out. So now instead of going to breweries I brew my own stuff and try to keep up with my oldest/closest friends vs trying to meet new people. 6:10 I moved here from Michigan with 5k and made it work. Its nearly impossible to get a job in the film industry before you move here. However if you work a "normal job" then I am sure its possible to get a job before moving. In the film biz its all about who you know.

I'm interested in living in LA mainly because I want to go to school to learn about filmmaking, and eventually get a job working in the film industry, like screenwriting, video production, or some other aspect of working in films. I have a very creative bent, and I would like to live in a place where I feel like creativity is a valued asset, not just something you do for a hobby on the side because everybody thinks you need to get a "real" job. I also like the idea of living in a place with a nice climate where I don't have to worry about icy roads in the winter, I can have a palm tree in my yard, and I don't have to travel for two days just to see an ocean. I currently live in Kansas, and I would like to experience life in a "nice" part of the country before I get too old!
If you believe in yourself, do it! Its not as hard as you think to live here or get in the door. Its about knowing your stuff and BEING HERE. Good luck :)

Nashville would be good too tbh, a lot of the LA producers, record studios, artists continue to leave LA for Nashville. It’s a huge music hub down here and way more affordable.

How is Playa Vista? I was thinking about finding apartment there but people seem to complain about it being too far from everything and too close to LAX
@@naverich4603 Parts of this video were filmed in playa vista. It's all personal preference, but I personally love it. It's incredibly scenic, peaceful, safe, coastal by the beach, really nice laid back vibe and it's self contained. It's it's own city tucked away between Culver City and Marina Del Rey I have no complaints. Feels like the backlot of a film studio with all of the apartments, condos, and homes feeling like props lol but I love it. Truly a gorgeous area that neighbors all of the westside
Financial planning is like navigation. If you know where you are and where you want to go, navigation isn't such a great problem. It's when you don't know the two points that it's difficult
People dont understand that the prices of things are never going back down. This inflation is deeper than we think. Those buying groceries are well aware that the real inflation is much over 10%. The increments dont match our income, yet certain investors still earn over $365,000 in stocks and assets. Wish I could accomplish that.

I’m from Toronto, and I had a choice between Vancouver and LA back in 2021 when I ran away from home. I went with Vancouver since it was much easier to stay there permanently. I visited LA last year and just loved it. Always did.
weather-wise: it's still a much warmer and sunnier city than the vast majority of other cities. The winters have been cooler and rainier lately. It doesn't mean they won't go back to how they had been.
Can certainly relate to the early closing thing. Here in London, restaurants and pubs have been closing earlier since COVID. Yep you can be in central London on a Friday night at 9pm and things are starting to shut down.
Moved to LA in 2021 just like you! I had a detour living in Vegas for about 18 months (Never Again!) , everyone I met in my gated community moved from Cali and just hated the fact they had to move to Vegas for a 5,000 sqt foot house they could never leave b/c it was 115 degrees for 4 months! I had to find out for myself what is the mystical life of LA they were all talking about, now I know!

Ya, no thanks. Lived in LA my whole life. I can't say one positive thing about it. Live in Asia now. I can crack a beer on the beach without police showing up to give me an open container then you go back to your car to find a parking ticket, all while homeless junkies shoot up in plain view and walk around with their pants down taking a crap on the sidewalk. I just don't see it... if you have the money to live in LA...why? The weather? Is sitting in your car for hours a day something you want to do?
its expensive everywhere. i moved to san antonio texas 2 yrs & half ago. apartment rent & gas is slightly cheaper than CA. but thats about it. stores like target, walmart, trader joes etc are about the same price as CA. texas is very boring & humid. you got to have apartment ac & car ac on 24/7 because its unbearable. with that said. im moving back to CA next month in May
And SA wages are like 1/2 of what they pay in Cali - TX is pro-business, so they favor the greedy ass employers over the lowly workers who are just trying to survive
I also moved from Brooklyn to LA and one thing that surprised me was rentals in LA charge pet rent ($50/month) - which I had never heard about in 10 yrs living all over NYC. If you look into getting a letter or any proof that they are an emotional support / psychiatric service dog and show the landlord they stop asking right away.
This surprises me, I've been charged pet rent in much much smaller places than either LA or NYC. Maybe there's a regulation against it in New York specifically?

Pretty spot on although I will say Seattle beat LA in terms of loneliness for me. I recently moved to the beach community of Ventura. This place is magical! Super laid back and it's so easy to meet people here.
I can relate very well to this. I am an LA person, born here... but also lived near Seattle for several years as an adult. SO lonely, so hard to meet people. I did also live in Ventura, which is such a gem. So much music and art, and warm people.

I've lived in LA my whole life. In the same apartment with my parents. There's no place in the US that will have similar weather and same access to Mexican food
Regarding shopping, I heavily recommend Trader Joes (as you mentioned!), Winco (yaaas) and places like 99 Ranch and H Mart: they'll usually have much cheaper produce than, say, Ralphs or Vons or whatever. 85 Degrees is great if you want coffee, milk tea and pastries. Also I agree that it's very easy to become a homebody in LA. I've lived here all my life and the thought of driving everywhere on a spur of the moment thing isn't appealing. That's why there isn't a lot of spontaneity, because you have to drive and park or you have to try to deal with public transit that doesn't always show up on time. The extra charges on the receipt are ridiculous and, frankly, I doubt they actually go to helping the staff. I believe you can ask for them to be removed and then tip as you normally would: the restaurants are banking on you paying these extra optional charges and tipping on top.

I was on an LA vaction for about 7 days. you definitely need the tapcard, uber and ideally you are on a membership for ralphs and costco to save on groceries. and you should be able to walk for at least a mile here and there

I’ve been to Australia (Brisbane and Sydney, specifically) and I thought it was so funny when someone from there told us homes cost an average of $800K AUD and that was crazy to them. In USD, that’s only $527K. In LA, you couldn’t even get a shack for $527K. The average home is $1M USD ($1.5M+ AUD) in LA area. As an LA native, we don’t want more people here. They’re bringing gentrification and pushing out the locals. Nearly all of our issues stem from overpopulation. We don’t need more.
I moved to the hills on the east side of LA from NYC twenty years ago and one intangible fact difference is that in New York, in many ways, things tend to find you, whether it’s career opportunities, unique cultural discoveries or a sense of the history or community. However in Los Angeles, you must consciously seek these things out yourself. There’s really a lot going on here that I didn’t know anything about for many years. It’s an incredibly diverse city where the vibe of different communities changes dramatically from one to the other, regarding everything from the food to the people and even the weather. It’s also one of the few regions anywhere where you can go skiing, then hiking and end up sunbathing by the beach all in one day and still get home in time for dinner.
Agreed with a lot of this as an east coast transplant who's been out in LA for a long time now. Going out in LA in my 20s was a blast. So many stories and memories. But the pandemic really changed things. Even when people go out, they stick to themselves. As for the weather, hard to say on that. Two winters is a small sample size. People in the 90s in LA have told me it got like that for a few winters, too. One thing to look at is that L.A.'s Mediterranean climate (we're not actually a desert) is about half as dry as actual cities along the Mediterranean sea like Rome which get a lot more rain in spring and fall than we do. And even in the summer Rome gets the occasional thunderstorm because it's way more humid. So maybe now L.A. will go that way. I hope not. Source: I write about weather on the side haha.

Re: The Weather - As someone who was born in California and who has spent much of her life here,I can tell you that we pretty much have 7 year cycles in weather - even with climate change. In other words, say you start with a drought on year 1 of the 7 year cycle and it gets progressively wetter as you progress up to year 7. Then you start a 7 year cycle back to drought. This means that we may have several years together of drought or of a lot of rain. Climate change may be affecting this cycle, but that's how it's been most of my 82 years of life.
Yes, there is transit here. As you mentioned, it is problematic due to the massive size of the region. I live only about 15 miles from work, but taking the bus takes about 2 hours each way depending on traffic. Also, they (at least in the SGV), the buses are less than reliable. I do like being able to take the train to the beach, but living in the SGV makes things take so much longer, especially when one doesn't drive.

LA was a very social and very populated city prior to covid. The energy was so nice then. More people where happy rent was cheaper and food. Now it's different. It's best to come with a vehicle to LA.

Public transportation in L.A. is vetter than Denver by far. Taking distance in consideration. Used to have friends in Corona area & I was impressed I could get to L.A. 60 miles away.

All cities go through waves of change. If anything, LA is returning to a more normal state after Covid. One big advantage you didn't mention of the LA region is the variety of fantastic food. Seems like you never go to areas that are not on the Westside of LA. Places like DTLA, Arts District, Silverlake, Los Feliz, East LA, etc. Have you visited any museums? Gone to any sporting venues? Another benefit in LA, you didn't list, is the huge amount of sports teams in the region both at the college and professional levels and some of the best sports venues in the country. Same goes for museums and music venues in the LA region. Have you been to the Hollywood Bowl or the Greek Theater? How about the myriad of great museums?
*It would be great if you did a definitive piece on how LA and California at large became so expensive to live in and how the cost keep rapidly soaring ETC. You know actually unbiased, go into the real political climate "actual names, dates, written records ETC, something forensic". With a small budget to promote that video, it would do damn good, as no one has the courage to ouch that subject.*
Time to move from Culver City to the beach cities Redondo Hermosa Manhattan Torrance it's still real good here. I've been here since the 60s and you can't really compare today with back then because people were just different and it was just much more of a good vibe
I love Southern Cali and Id never leave but yes its getting more and more expensive. Sadly 6 figures is a must to live “comfortably” and you still have to budget.
for the average person la is not the city for you, inflation has made minimum wage truly pointless, the average meal costs around 30$, crime, homelessness, disgust is at a rise, people are unwelcoming depending on where you go, insurance is unafforadable, metro and transit has seen a rise in stabbings stealing, ect, and the city feels truly dead, no life, completely disassociation, it truly is an eyesore, everything is in disrepair, falling apart, and a ton of incomplete construction projects due to bankruptcy.
I just moved out here again. After being in nc with the army, it’s time to go home. Last time I was spat in by some dude for being a soldier. Hopefully it goes better
north hollywood is a good lower cost-of-living area that is mostly safe and friendly neighborhoods. the city has improved on cleaning up homeless encampments but i suspect its more "corralling" them into areas where there is already a larger homeless population, downtown is a mess the videos are pretty representative of reality unfortunately. its hotter out here in the valley during the summer but can be much more affordable to live here. I got relatively lucky and am paying 2k for a two bedroom with my partner, but i have problems with upstairs neighbors due to the building being relatively old and cheaply constructed (not concrete). its not necessarily ideal but its doable
L.A. is a paradox, the good and the bad. How it balances out depends on the person. There is always risk. The freeways suck, the weather is mostly great. Too many homeless and crime is noticeably active. L.A. has changed since 2020, not for the better. Oh did I mention the weather ? The real La La Land ? Evolving into a John Carpenter movie. However, for some determined people a slice of the Cali dream may still exist, for others a Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

I noticed very few date. Very few hold hands. Very few make out/kiss in LA since 2019 Housing is the MAJOR. I work at home. 1 bedroom is 220/mo. But it beats St.Louis.OMG!
LA makes me sad. My GF and I left during the pandemic to the east coast to evade the crazies and their medical cult. It has been very difficult to let go of what LA was not what it currently is. Where you moved to? What are you looking for? I'm an LA native, and the day I left was the happiest day of my life. I have nightmares about having to go back. But I moved to South East Asia so little different than your situation. Maybe the city you live in now isn't giving you what you want, but I can't imagine LA being any better. What's your income? I guess that's what really makes the difference. It better be over 100K per year because I was making 80K a year 6 years ago and most of it was just flushed down the toilet on house and car, and I was trying to live as cheap as possible. Living with roommates and the whole bit. If you're self employed and working remotely, then you can live anywhere on the globe.
Exact same situation for me. I left during the pandemic. I miss my life in LA so much. I keep begging my husband to move back. We’re both CA natives. I do know that it isn’t like it was before 2020 and that breaks my heart. Good luck to you.
Some people make Disneyland into their nightlife. You can buy annual pass at Universal Studios. LA doesn’t seem safe at night especially the streets. It’s so desolate. You never know if someone is following you.
I'm moving to LA from Houston, for one reason: the weather. Houston heat/humidity is unlivable. My current destination city is San Clemente. I know it's a long way from the rest of LA, but I'm 63 and retired. But, if I can find a home more centrally located, and comparably priced to San Clemente, then I'll grab it. My budget is $1,500,000.
Nice! OC is a great spot for retirees. Definitely more suburban and quiet than LA city.
San Clemente is a great choice. There's some great beaches around there and it's less hectic compared to "central" LA. You'll still be near a ton of amenties.

I moved from LA to Dallas back in 08. I grew up in South Central so my path wasn't too bright. I left to start fresh. I tell anyone if you can afford to live in LA in a nice area, have a good job, it's worth it. Some ppl hate Texas and I love it. So it just depends. But I love LA weather, beaches, mountains, food, etc. I love visiting as a tourist. It's for sure a good time! LA will always be home.

@@jaycarter4682I would do as much as you can to build that business before you make the jump. I moved there in 2018 to do music and I didn’t get to the point to where I got a lot of traction until 2021. I think people want to move there because of the network etc (exactly why I did) but don’t think about the groundwork to get their creative business off the ground and making money. It’s a very expensive city to try and do that in because your cost of living is so high it becomes difficult to set aside money to invest back into your business. I think it’s a better idea to build in a more affordable city and then move there a few years later to take your creative business to the next level.
Well i think the point is all the positives of NYC are to due with the city itself. Geographically, its a flat swampie area. All the LA positives are the weather, beach-mountain etc...less to do with the actual uniqueness of the city itself.

I live in Mar Vista and run a rental housing business. I try not to raise rent on my tenants but the way LA’s economy is going, I had to raise rent 4% every year since 2022. Inflation is definitely hurting everyone, including landlords. If anyone out there thinking about moving to LA with a budget, your best bet is to start out by renting a room from a family that has a house for the first couple of years until you make enough money to get an apartment of your own. Renting a room will be much cheaper and you will save money and often you will find that family homes give you that privacy that everyone is looking for.

Los Angeles is a place to make your fortune, mind blowing money and opportunity, but you have to be confident, good at selling yourself, and motivated. If you are, Los Angeles can be a dream. LA has a buzz, an excitement, a creative energy that makes everyday interesting and fun. The geography & nature is amazing and the best weather anywhere. I can go snow skiing at Big Bear (outside LA) in the morning and surfing at Malibu in the afternoon, its like nowhere else in the world. If you believe in yourself, LA as a $1.4 Trillion dollar economy (larger than 46 states) has all the riches you could ever want. It's expensive, but you make ALOT more money than places like FL or TX. Do not move here with the mindset of a tourist, move here ready to work HARD, and you will be rewarded! LA has all the opportunity in the world, it just depends on you. Its not a city for dreamers, but it certainly is a city for those who work hard. I wouldnt be here if it wasn't advantageous and honestly wouldn't live anywhere else. Nothing compares to LA. 💯

I had family in from out of state, took them up to Yamashiro in the hills above Hollywood (amazing views of LA), the bill was $455, I tipped $125 for 20%. Do a few of those nightly and walk away with $400-500 a night. The easiest way to make some good money quickly is to wait tables. Some go from waiting tables to tending bar which is lucrative too as you cultivate your passion, but yea waiting tables is good quick money in any city.

Michael this video is so on point! I moved here in May 2021 close to your timeframe here too, and everything is so accurate! Even tho I’m from NY and lived in WI, WA (Seattle), then made move down from Seattle to LA, the rent prices and grocery store prices weren’t too different in 2021 to adjust to, however it is frustrating seeing inflation rise and small things like late night spots closing early (I’m a night owl!) So I truly appreciated every detail in this video! The people need to know! ❤

The club scene listennnn it used to pop yall just had to be there it was vibe. All imma say now is the West Hollywood clubs be careful. Finding (friends) for me was easy because I lived in the valley and you’ll find more natives there I learned tho stay away from people in the industry they’ll snake u quick asfl. I definitely agree with u on the homeless, and traffic situation. Used public transit and the red line is a scary place. The video was beautifully made with the transitions between sceneries and lil clips throughout the video.

Great video! My partner and I recently visited LA, and we were pleasantly surprised by how much safer we felt compared to where we currently live, which is Atlanta. The people we encountered were genuinely friendly, which left a positive impression on us. Honestly, our trip to LA restored a lot of our hope in humanity.
As for the homelessness situation, while it's definitely present, we found the individuals there to be far less aggressive than those we typically encounter in Atlanta. Overall, LA gave us such a laid-back, chill vibe-especially in Downtown, which really caught us by surprise!
I went to GSU, so I've spent a lot of time in literal downtown Atlanta at all times of day and year. I'd rather be in downtown LA 90% of the time, for sure.
Lived in San Gabriel Valley my entire life. It's a constant struggle for me. Trying to figure out if I should go rent a luxury apartment in a nice area or keep saving to buy a mediocre townhome out in the boondocks since that's all we could (barely) afford lol. Great video.
I moved here in 2017 and it was super fun to go out and meet new people but all of the meeting people was majorly superficial. It never felt like you made true friends. But I don't go out much anymore because A) Im not as young as I used to be lol. B)its super expensive to go out. So now instead of going to breweries I brew my own stuff and try to keep up with my oldest/closest friends vs trying to meet new people.
6:10 I moved here from Michigan with 5k and made it work. Its nearly impossible to get a job in the film industry before you move here. However if you work a "normal job" then I am sure its possible to get a job before moving. In the film biz its all about who you know.

I'm interested in living in LA mainly because I want to go to school to learn about filmmaking, and eventually get a job working in the film industry, like screenwriting, video production, or some other aspect of working in films. I have a very creative bent, and I would like to live in a place where I feel like creativity is a valued asset, not just something you do for a hobby on the side because everybody thinks you need to get a "real" job. I also like the idea of living in a place with a nice climate where I don't have to worry about icy roads in the winter, I can have a palm tree in my yard, and I don't have to travel for two days just to see an ocean. I currently live in Kansas, and I would like to experience life in a "nice" part of the country before I get too old!
If you believe in yourself, do it! Its not as hard as you think to live here or get in the door. Its about knowing your stuff and BEING HERE. Good luck :)

Nashville would be good too tbh, a lot of the LA producers, record studios, artists continue to leave LA for Nashville. It’s a huge music hub down here and way more affordable.

It's incredibly scenic, peaceful, safe, coastal by the beach, really nice laid back vibe and it's self contained. It's it's own city tucked away between Culver City and Marina Del Rey
I have no complaints. Feels like the backlot of a film studio with all of the apartments, condos, and homes feeling like props lol but I love it. Truly a gorgeous area that neighbors all of the westside

People dont understand that the prices of things are never going back down. This inflation is deeper than we think. Those buying groceries are well aware that the real inflation is much over 10%. The increments dont match our income, yet certain investors still earn over $365,000 in stocks and assets. Wish I could accomplish that.

I’m from Toronto, and I had a choice between Vancouver and LA back in 2021 when I ran away from home. I went with Vancouver since it was much easier to stay there permanently. I visited LA last year and just loved it. Always did.

weather-wise: it's still a much warmer and sunnier city than the vast majority of other cities.
The winters have been cooler and rainier lately. It doesn't mean they won't go back to how they had been.
Can certainly relate to the early closing thing. Here in London, restaurants and pubs have been closing earlier since COVID. Yep you can be in central London on a Friday night at 9pm and things are starting to shut down.
Moved to LA in 2021 just like you! I had a detour living in Vegas for about 18 months (Never Again!) , everyone I met in my gated community moved from Cali and just hated the fact they had to move to Vegas for a 5,000 sqt foot house they could never leave b/c it was 115 degrees for 4 months! I had to find out for myself what is the mystical life of LA they were all talking about, now I know!

Ya, no thanks. Lived in LA my whole life. I can't say one positive thing about it. Live in Asia now. I can crack a beer on the beach without police showing up to give me an open container then you go back to your car to find a parking ticket, all while homeless junkies shoot up in plain view and walk around with their pants down taking a crap on the sidewalk. I just don't see it... if you have the money to live in LA...why? The weather? Is sitting in your car for hours a day something you want to do?
its expensive everywhere. i moved to san antonio texas 2 yrs & half ago. apartment rent & gas is slightly cheaper than CA. but thats about it. stores like target, walmart, trader joes etc are about the same price as CA. texas is very boring & humid. you got to have apartment ac & car ac on 24/7 because its unbearable. with that said. im moving back to CA next month in May

I also moved from Brooklyn to LA and one thing that surprised me was rentals in LA charge pet rent ($50/month) - which I had never heard about in 10 yrs living all over NYC. If you look into getting a letter or any proof that they are an emotional support / psychiatric service dog and show the landlord they stop asking right away.
This surprises me, I've been charged pet rent in much much smaller places than either LA or NYC. Maybe there's a regulation against it in New York specifically?
Post Pandemic LA has a more isolationist vibe to me, a lot of shops closed in DTLA. The sense of purpose surely has felt less than here.

Pretty spot on although I will say Seattle beat LA in terms of loneliness for me. I recently moved to the beach community of Ventura. This place is magical! Super laid back and it's so easy to meet people here.

I can relate very well to this. I am an LA person, born here... but also lived near Seattle for several years as an adult. SO lonely, so hard to meet people. I did also live in Ventura, which is such a gem. So much music and art, and warm people.

I've lived in LA my whole life. In the same apartment with my parents. There's no place in the US that will have similar weather and same access to Mexican food
Regarding shopping, I heavily recommend Trader Joes (as you mentioned!), Winco (yaaas) and places like 99 Ranch and H Mart: they'll usually have much cheaper produce than, say, Ralphs or Vons or whatever. 85 Degrees is great if you want coffee, milk tea and pastries.
Also I agree that it's very easy to become a homebody in LA. I've lived here all my life and the thought of driving everywhere on a spur of the moment thing isn't appealing. That's why there isn't a lot of spontaneity, because you have to drive and park or you have to try to deal with public transit that doesn't always show up on time.
The extra charges on the receipt are ridiculous and, frankly, I doubt they actually go to helping the staff. I believe you can ask for them to be removed and then tip as you normally would: the restaurants are banking on you paying these extra optional charges and tipping on top.

I was on an LA vaction for about 7 days. you definitely need the tapcard, uber and ideally you are on a membership for ralphs and costco to save on groceries. and you should be able to walk for at least a mile here and there

I’ve been to Australia (Brisbane and Sydney, specifically) and I thought it was so funny when someone from there told us homes cost an average of $800K AUD and that was crazy to them. In USD, that’s only $527K. In LA, you couldn’t even get a shack for $527K. The average home is $1M USD ($1.5M+ AUD) in LA area.
As an LA native, we don’t want more people here. They’re bringing gentrification and pushing out the locals. Nearly all of our issues stem from overpopulation. We don’t need more.
Go see Ojai, Simi Valley, and Thousand Oaks area. It's all so beautiful there. There is lots to do in the Los Angeles area.

I moved to the hills on the east side of LA from NYC twenty years ago and one intangible fact difference is that in New York, in many ways, things tend to find you, whether it’s career opportunities, unique cultural discoveries or a sense of the history or community. However in Los Angeles, you must consciously seek these things out yourself. There’s really a lot going on here that I didn’t know anything about for many years. It’s an incredibly diverse city where the vibe of different communities changes dramatically from one to the other, regarding everything from the food to the people and even the weather.
It’s also one of the few regions anywhere where you can go skiing, then hiking and end up sunbathing by the beach all in one day and still get home in time for dinner.
Agreed with a lot of this as an east coast transplant who's been out in LA for a long time now. Going out in LA in my 20s was a blast. So many stories and memories. But the pandemic really changed things. Even when people go out, they stick to themselves. As for the weather, hard to say on that. Two winters is a small sample size. People in the 90s in LA have told me it got like that for a few winters, too. One thing to look at is that L.A.'s Mediterranean climate (we're not actually a desert) is about half as dry as actual cities along the Mediterranean sea like Rome which get a lot more rain in spring and fall than we do. And even in the summer Rome gets the occasional thunderstorm because it's way more humid. So maybe now L.A. will go that way. I hope not. Source: I write about weather on the side haha.

Re: The Weather - As someone who was born in California and who has spent much of her life here,I can tell you that we pretty much have 7 year cycles in weather - even with climate change. In other words, say you start with a drought on year 1 of the 7 year cycle and it gets progressively wetter as you progress up to year 7. Then you start a 7 year cycle back to drought. This means that we may have several years together of drought or of a lot of rain. Climate change may be affecting this cycle, but that's how it's been most of my 82 years of life.

Yes, there is transit here. As you mentioned, it is problematic due to the massive size of the region. I live only about 15 miles from work, but taking the bus takes about 2 hours each way depending on traffic. Also, they (at least in the SGV), the buses are less than reliable. I do like being able to take the train to the beach, but living in the SGV makes things take so much longer, especially when one doesn't drive.

LA was a very social and very populated city prior to covid. The energy was so nice then. More people where happy rent was cheaper and food. Now it's different. It's best to come with a vehicle to LA.

Public transportation in L.A. is vetter than Denver by far. Taking distance in consideration. Used to have friends in Corona area & I was impressed I could get to L.A. 60 miles away.

All cities go through waves of change. If anything, LA is returning to a more normal state after Covid.
One big advantage you didn't mention of the LA region is the variety of fantastic food.
Seems like you never go to areas that are not on the Westside of LA. Places like DTLA, Arts District, Silverlake, Los Feliz, East LA, etc. Have you visited any museums? Gone to any sporting venues?
Another benefit in LA, you didn't list, is the huge amount of sports teams in the region both at the college and professional levels and some of the best sports venues in the country.
Same goes for museums and music venues in the LA region. Have you been to the Hollywood Bowl or the Greek Theater? How about the myriad of great museums?
*It would be great if you did a definitive piece on how LA and California at large became so expensive to live in and how the cost keep rapidly soaring ETC. You know actually unbiased, go into the real political climate "actual names, dates, written records ETC, something forensic". With a small budget to promote that video, it would do damn good, as no one has the courage to ouch that subject.*
Time to move from Culver City to the beach cities Redondo Hermosa Manhattan Torrance it's still real good here. I've been here since the 60s and you can't really compare today with back then because people were just different and it was just much more of a good vibe

for the average person la is not the city for you, inflation has made minimum wage truly pointless, the average meal costs around 30$, crime, homelessness, disgust is at a rise, people are unwelcoming depending on where you go, insurance is unafforadable, metro and transit has seen a rise in stabbings stealing, ect, and the city feels truly dead, no life, completely disassociation, it truly is an eyesore, everything is in disrepair, falling apart, and a ton of incomplete construction projects due to bankruptcy.

north hollywood is a good lower cost-of-living area that is mostly safe and friendly neighborhoods. the city has improved on cleaning up homeless encampments but i suspect its more "corralling" them into areas where there is already a larger homeless population, downtown is a mess the videos are pretty representative of reality unfortunately. its hotter out here in the valley during the summer but can be much more affordable to live here. I got relatively lucky and am paying 2k for a two bedroom with my partner, but i have problems with upstairs neighbors due to the building being relatively old and cheaply constructed (not concrete). its not necessarily ideal but its doable
L.A. is a paradox, the good and the bad. How it balances out depends on the person. There is always risk. The freeways suck, the weather is mostly great. Too many homeless and crime is noticeably active. L.A. has changed since 2020, not for the better. Oh did I mention the weather ? The real La La Land ? Evolving into a John Carpenter movie.
However, for some determined people a slice of the Cali dream may still exist, for others a Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

LA makes me sad. My GF and I left during the pandemic to the east coast to evade the crazies and their medical cult. It has been very difficult to let go of what LA was not what it currently is. For creatives (me) it is very difficult not being there. LA is the host of incredible world talent. I keep thinking of moving back. Not sure. Please comment.

Where you moved to? What are you looking for? I'm an LA native, and the day I left was the happiest day of my life. I have nightmares about having to go back. But I moved to South East Asia so little different than your situation. Maybe the city you live in now isn't giving you what you want, but I can't imagine LA being any better. What's your income? I guess that's what really makes the difference. It better be over 100K per year because I was making 80K a year 6 years ago and most of it was just flushed down the toilet on house and car, and I was trying to live as cheap as possible. Living with roommates and the whole bit. If you're self employed and working remotely, then you can live anywhere on the globe.

Some people make Disneyland into their nightlife. You can buy annual pass at Universal Studios. LA doesn’t seem safe at night especially the streets. It’s so desolate. You never know if someone is following you.
