Hiking in Durmitor - Mali Međed (2217 m) & Veliki Međed (2287 m) (Montenegro)

Durmitor National Park is a breathtaking massif located in Northernwestern Montenegro and belongs to the Dinaric Alps. It reaches a maximum height of 2,522 m (Bobotov Kuk). On 25 July 2022, we decided to climb the Međed mountain ridge, i.e. the Mali Međed [Little Bear] (2,217 m) and the two peaks of the Veliki Međed [Big Bear] (Sjeverni vrh 2,287 m; Južni vrh 2,285 m). We parked our car on a small parking spot in the forest in Bosača (9:30 am). We climbed the Međed mountain ridge in a North-South direction. The climb on the Mali Međed’s northwest face was very steep and often challenging, and at one point we missed the signs (which were not always very visible), but in the end we got on track again. Good mountaineering boots are a necessity on this part of the trail. The view on top definitely made up for all the hard work. The mountain trail on the narrow ridge was often very steep, with steep flanks on both sides, but the more challenging passages are equipped for via ferrata. We used our helmets and via ferrata sets and an additional climbing rope for the protection (simultaneous progression) of our youngest daughter. While hiking on the ridge, a rock slide took place at the other side of the Velika Kalica valley, on the western flank of the Savin kuk (2,313 m). After the last peak, we descended (via ferrata) to the saddle point Велика превија (2,145 m), located between Južni vrh (2,285 m) and Terzin bogaz (2,306 m). We continued over Veliko rame to Katun Lokvice (1,800 m), were you are able to order some drinks. In this section, we kept on our helmets because the steep flanks increase the risk of falling rocks. Lake Lokvice appeared to be completely dried out. From Katun Lokvice we continued our hike, passing west of Crno jezero [Black Lake]. In the end, we passed Barno jezero on our way to the parking lot in Bosača (18:45 pm).
