  • It's not a hot take to suggest that The marvels isn't going to be successful. Instead of just reasserting that, let's look at the reasons why. Today we're talking about the three main characters not being a draw for the audience and the plot of the MCU being a mess

      @@gregowen2022 I have a theory. NERDS are exclusive and classist and the reason why the West is divided in 2020 era. The 90s - early 2000's era was more diverse and widespread than any other time period but it did passover the Revenge of the NERDS 80's era. And although they are a recluse, nerds hate being ignored or ganged up on. They want to feel like they are winning and don't feel women friendships are fair. That's why Black Widow, Maria Hill, and Scarlet Witch don't interact with each other but make their lives about the MEN they surround: Nick Fury, Vision and Hawk-Eye.
      The Marvels are ABOUT women and that scares nerds. A poll asked who is more powerful: Storm, Wolverine and some other psychic characters and people were really nervous about Storm actually leading the polls and found reasons to talk her down. Why? Storm has taken down psychics without her powers in comics, she's tame around Prof. X.

    "Girl Power" can be done perfectly right and a scene in Season 2 of The Mandalorian comes to mind. When an all-female team of Cara Dune alongside Bo-Katan and Co. are infiltrating Moff Gideon's ship to help Mando extract Grogu, they (in lots of John Wick-esque oners) focus on doing their job: Blasting Imperials, and ensuring the mission gets complete.
    No hair flips, no "girl boss" stares to the camera, no pandering dialogue, etc.

    Maybe you'll cover this in Part 2, but 'The Marvels' director Nia DeCosta basically has one credit for a 'Candyman' movie, and she also has a writing credit on 'The Marvels', yet they brought in new writers in January. For some (checklist) reason, Disney is hiring directors with little big screen and genre experience. Julius Onah is to direct 'Captain America: New World Order' and he has just a few big-screen movie credits, and Yann Demange who is to direct 'Blade' has a few movie credits but more in television. I don't see any superhero/action flicks in any of their IMdbs. The director hired for the pending Star Wars project, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, is a 'Canadian journalist, filmmaker and activist known for her work in films that highlight the inequality for women.' Has she even seen a Star Wars movie?

    • @gregowen2022
      @gregowen2022  Год назад +75

      That's a good chunk of it. They are going to make this movie so bluntly political. As I look into it, it's shocking how many of these people have activist backgrounds. Dacostas first movie was Little Woods and it has all the liberal talking points. Candyman supposedly deals with gentrification police brutality towards blacks.
      I'm not saying there isn't a place in the film world for that. But I am saying there's a reason they don't get Spike Lee or Tyler Perry to do superhero movies

    With how many people went to see Dr. Strange 2 and asked questions like "Why is Wanda crazy now, and who are these kids she keeps going on and on about?" or "Why is Wanda suddenly stronger than Dr. Strange? Didn't she used to have some mind powers and telekinesis?" you would think Disney would realize that using the TV shows as a basis for the films is a bad idea. Making their least watched show the backbone of one of their most expensive movies is a recipe for disaster.
    That said from what we know about the characters and the 'using their powers makes them swap places' mechanic we probably already know the entire plot. Some disposable villain does something that may or may not cause the swapping mechanic, and we'll get some fish out of water comedy. Carol and Monica end up fighting because of a misunderstanding. Ms. Marvel makes them stop fighting by showing them that they have more alike than they realize. The three of them then go and defeat the disposable villain, having all learned a lesson from each other, possibly with a false sacrifice that gets walked back seconds after it fails to land anyway. After credit scene comes and reminds us that the story is never over by teasing a new character, played by OMG IS THAT (insert name here)?!?!
    The only part of that worth watching on RUclips two years from now is the Carol and Monica fight, depending on how the swapping mechanic is used. Imagine a fight where Carol blasts at Monica, so Monica uses her powers to make Carol take the shot instead. But that also sounds like something that Disney will mess up horribly, because following the established rules of their worlds isn't something they are great at doing (see Cassie using Pym tech to mess with police officers who were about let her her leave jail with a shrunken police car for a recent stupid example).

    The point you made about characters in the MCU reminds me of how I perceived Marvel and DC most of my life. I often described Marvel comics as being character driven. This being evident in past Marvel stories like Silver or Bronze Age Spiderman or the dynamic among the Fantastic Four with the family elements. Whereas DC seemed more plot driven. You have stories where events would take place. Some stories that come to mind are Crisis On Infinite Earths, where the multiverse is being destroyed and it's up to the heroes of DC's multiple titles to find a way stop the threat. The Long Halloween is a murder mystery themed around the holidays. In the hands a lesser team, it would've come off like a gimmick title coasting the success of The Silence of the Lambs. But in the hands of Jeph Loeb and the late Tim Sale, it not only worked but has the staying power to be one of the best Batman graphic novels of all time. And finally there's Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?!" I could've used What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way, the story that explores the morality of Superman when the world begins to condone the violent methods of The Elite or To the Man Who Has Everything, another Superman story written by Alan Moore showing Superman's desire to have experienced life on Krypton only reconcile that had he lived on Krypton, he would die the same way as his birth parents. Not having the power to save it. Recognizing the value in being Superman. But for all intents and purposes, I will use the example I chose. The intrigue of Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?! explores a world without Superman by depicting the events that led up to Superman's retirement. All while acting as a love letter to legacy of Superman. These were Marvel and DC's strengths, yet I feel that both have forgotten that. And I am left uncertain of what will happen to both in the coming years.

You can tell a Captain America or Dr Strange story because they've been popular for decades and there's very good idea of what makes them appealing. Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel has never been well-liked. America Chavez's solo book is literally one of the worst comics ever published. Many people actively dislike Ironheart because she was written to be so obnoxious. People like Sam Wilson as Falcon but he's just not Captain America.
      I have no idea what the hell DC has been doing with its movies. It was a major mistake to feature Superman and Barry Allen written so badly out off character right of the bat. Zack Snyder was a just a bad choice. And god do I wish Harley Quinn would just go away for a couple of decades in the movies and the comics.

In all honesty, I think no one is going to care about this movie because the characters don’t have any goals (the closest thing to a goal I can think of is the Smallest marvel figuring out her powers) or personality…I haven’t seen any of there shows/movies but what I’ve seen from YT is basically this:
    Captain marvel: Stoic, No emotions.
    Blue marvel: I know nothing about her
    Smallest marvel: Whats to become a superhero to be well liked or something
    While I’m at it…why on Gods green earth have 3 characters that have “Marvel” in there name on screen at the same time? That is gonna be REALLY confusing

    • @gregowen2022
      @gregowen2022  Год назад +2

      You're absolutely right in that they have no goals. Marvel forgot what makes a character compelling, they just figured that the multiverse being in peril would be so interesting that it would sell the movie. That's cool, but we didn't really care about Thanos. We cared about the characters fighting him and what they fought for.

Plan and simple.
      Captain Marvel is perfect, bland, OP, Mary Sue.
      One is still a SELFISH CHILD
      And the other one…I don’t even know man…hell, even my D&D CHARACTER has more of a hook then these 3 bland pieces of wood 😂

Imagine if Captain Marvel had not been inserted into the last two infinity films, or had an unnecessary origin story forced in. Instead, imagine if he emerged in a post-endgame world that was desperate for new heroes with the carol Danvers, who had been blipped out, and was now frightened of aliens and super power tech only to find herself having to deal with an invasion of Kree And becoming a superhero. It could’ve been great if they had just waited.

    As a woman, I absolutely detest this new female power centered movies. There used to be plenty of strong and likable female leads. They were awesome. They had character arcs and didn’t have to weaken the men to make the women look strong. They’re not relatable on any level. Most women don’t want to see men be pathetic in weak so the woman can save the day everytime. It’s not “new and fresh” or even well done. Plus, it’s heavy on the politics and the feminism. There’s a time for politics, but when you’re watching a movie and just trying to enjoy a plot, that’s not it. I don’t want to hear girl boss messages in my movies. I want to see good movies. IF there’s a message at all, make it subtle. The movie plot should be able to stand on its’ own. The woke movies keep failing but they keep doing it. Why? For example: in my opinion the movie A Quiet Place 1 and 2 had Emily Blunt be strong and relatable. She wasn’t perfect but she was brave and did her best. Her husband was strong as well and she really complimented that. It was very inspiring. If they’d have made the husband a weakling the movie wouldn’t have been half as good. I’d have just spent the whole first movie being frustrated with him instead of enjoying the story.

      When Carol Danvers assumed the Captain Marvel name she was mandated as an important character by Marvel editorial. The MCU needed a women to lead a movie but the movie rights to their most prominent female characters (Susan Richards, She-Hulk and the various X-women) were with other studios. Prior to becoming Captain Marvel Carol Danvers was the original Ms Marvel. In the late 2000s they put her on the Avengers and give her a solo book and she became pretty popular. Then the change happened. As Ms Marvel Carol was compassionate, fun and more than a little sexy. Her and Spider-Man were dating for awhile. When she became Captain Marvel they gave her a more "politically correct" (i.e. less sexy) costume, cut off her hair, and made it a point to have the artists draw her with small breasts, narrow hips and strong chin. They also changed her personality to "gruff hardass"; the way she acts is based on legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager. Basically Marvel decided their most prominent woman needed to be more masculine and less feminine in appearance and personality. Quite frankly it struck me as a bizarre choice at the time and still baffles me.

The creation of the Avengers and the build towards a war with Thanos, along with its culmination, was pretty much universally praised. Were there hiccups? Sure. But they didn't derail anything. The Multiverse saga, thus far, is a jumbled mess where it means different things in different shows/movies and your villain is actually a million villains, or something? Damn, they even ended up taking shots in the various shows and movies, trivializing Thanos and the power of the Infinity Stones - thus devaluing that whole saga. There's no way they cleanly piece this all together for an 'Endgame' moment. As for The Marvels ,you're spot on when asking whether people will even know/remember/care who they are. I thought Ms. Marvel was good for what it was, but she's definitely not ready for a movie. Monica was a largely forgettable character. Captain Marvel was turned into a Mary Sue whose actress basically told the fans to f off. She's got the charm and personality of a rock, and it shows in her acting, too.

      FWIW they didn't actually trivialize the power of the Infinity Stones. They just didn't explain that the stones only work in the universe they're from. That's actually a bit of canon left over from the awesome JLAvengers crossover DC and Marvel did. Six weapons and artifacts of great power were moved from their respective universes to the other by The Collector. Darkseid tracked down the Infinity Gauntlet in the DC Universe only to learn it didn't work there.

    I can not agree more.
    Tbh the only project I'm waiting for now is Thunderbolts, and the only reason is it has Bucky and that's it.
    They even managed to screw up Falcon and the Winter Soldier even tho Sam and Bucky were way more stablished in the past movies, Let alone this movie with its main material. I'm not really optimistic about the new Cap movie either with literally every MCU character in it.

    Phase 4 was so bad I cancelled my Disney+ because the kids weren't watching anything on it. I think we all gave up after Episode 1 or 2 of Moon Knight. Stopped caring about the movies after the Eternals. Not concerned about the Marvels at all, but will go if one of the kids asks to see it.

    The plot driven thing is the best point for the problems with the mcu atm. In terms of superhero content I’m more interested in series like the boys and invincible. And it’s not because I’m obsessed with the plot, it’s because I want to know where the characters go.

      But yeah, a planet of Kryptonian-like beings who weren't destroyed (I haven't seen comics) is scary when it seems like Earth is key to supplying more soldiers for the empire whose forces were spread so thin
      Plus characters like monster girl, Rudy, Rex, the Muller twins, Eve, etc have good stories that are relatable and not boring

    My attitude towards this film is decidedly "meh". Like, if I hear it's good I'll probably watch it on Disney Plus, but honestly I don't care about these characters at all.
    I think you're bang on the nail with character needing to come first. If I think about what I'm excited to see from phase 4, it's what happens next with Spiderman, it's more Shang Chi, it's Moon Knight, and it's Loki. I don't really care about all these new teams of characters I barely know, and I certainly don't care about characters like the new Captain America and the new Black Panther who have co-opted the identity of superior heroes.

    • @gregowen2022
      @gregowen2022  Год назад +1

      The co-opting is the part that is weakening these characters. Marvel just thought they could transfer the mantle and we would care, but that's not how it works.
      I agree about the movie. If I watch it at all, it'll be streaming

    I personally think, outside of focusing on politics instead of the story, they are having a issue bringing things together because they don't have a macguffin like the infinity stones to implant into stories anymore. They can make Kang the bad guy for every movie but that would get boring.

    • @gregowen2022
      @gregowen2022  Год назад +1

      That's a very interesting point I hadn't thought of. The stones were such an easy way to focus the audience on the looming threat, but there were enough of them that they could create a few story threads that would converge later.
      Wow, the original 3 phases were just so good, and I'm stunned that the same people then went on to crap out phase 4

    • @BiggieTrismegistus
      @BiggieTrismegistus 10 месяцев назад

      Phase 4 should have focused on smaller scale stories and saved the big stuff for the Avengers movies. An idea from the comics I would have liked to have seen is "Acts of Vengeance" where the villains got together and decided to go after heroes they normally didn't. Like Bullseye going after Spider-Man while Doctor Octopus attacked Daredevil or Magneto seeking out the Fantastic Four while Doctor Doom battled the X-Men. Hell, a whole phase of movies starring villains would have been cool too.
