    Nice setup, you really should do away with the power cable the way its run. Its just dangerous and for no reason at all when an actual plug is less than 5 feet away. There are ways to hide an extension lead without creating a fire or electrocution hazard

  • @K33P3RTommo
    @K33P3RTommo Год назад +10

    I like how this looks and it seems to work exactly how intended. However this is not safe from a power perspective. Unless everything that is pulling power on that set up is class 2 then they all require an earth connection. Without it there is zero protection and in the event of an earth fault the RCD at the consumer unit does not function saving a potential fire. Regardless if you believe the desk set up to not pull enough power, have you used the correct size and type of power cable that can handle the potential amount of amps that are potentially being pulled? There is a socket less than 2 meters from the desk, why not use that? there are plenty of way to hide an extension lead now for a height adjustable desk, Or why not have a socket put behind the desk. Either of those ways will then provide you with RCD protection which will in the event of a fault save anything from being damaged by a fire.
    Personally as an apprentice electrician, I would not be following this way of getting power to the desk due to the potential issues that you can be creating.

    Hold on, you've powered the entire desk with just a figure of 8 lead.....so you have 4x 13a sockets and zero earth connection......Do any of the devices that are plugged in have 3 core cable?

    • @techflow
      @techflow  Год назад +3

      Suprisingly, none of the devices (TV, TBT Tock, KRK's or LIFX LEDs) have an earth, being blanked off at each plug. The entire desk also draws no more than 150w peak and is idling around 80w. Doing this again, a male C13 plug would be a much better fit for power.

    • @bluliz
      @bluliz Год назад +1

      @@techflow ahh thats good, many of the port replciators/docks use clovers. Look in a rewireable C13/C14 plug set, £6 on amazon, so useful as you don't need a kettle lead sized hole in the wall!

      I thought the same thing immediately, it is odd in his response that none of the hardware requires ground. My wife’s AIO from HP has a ground, same for my USB C docking station. It looks great, there is likely nothing functionally wrong… It just makes me feel gross.

    Looking great!, myself i made some small blocks of wood with a slit in it and 2 holes. That way you can screw it onto the desk and then loop through a velcro cable tie (those are the best!)

  • @callumizzard1528
    @callumizzard1528 Год назад +3

    fig 8 connectors don't carry an earth you should swap that out for an IEC, infact as the desk moves why don't you go with something like TRUECON or Powercon?? that way you could get an ethercon and Powercon port mounted to a box on the desk and have your data and power tails lock into the desk

    • @jamescollins6085

  • @sajulldin5147
    @sajulldin5147 Год назад +1

    Good effort but slightly over kill in some areas. The double sockets are just unnecessary when you can pick up a PDU extension lead which can be screwed to the desk directly.
    Cable tidy trays work much better than screwing with washers your power adapters. Again easy to swap out or change as these just sit on the cable tidy trays.

    • @techflow
      @techflow  Год назад

      Thank you Saj! We have tried cable tidy trays before and they're good, but find them easy to get wires tangled around each other/fall out altogether. The aim for this was the ability to quickly service whilst maintaining structure of the cabels. Trays can also be thick, and with this being a standing desk, the thinner the profile of the cable management the better!

    For plug sockets. When I get a desk thick enough I will be employing wall sockets with USB ports, since wall plugs have switches, oh yeah, that's UK wall sockets. Why? because they can be better placed and screwed in properly and sunken into the desk, underneath etc. As for power supplies, I would used some metal brackets to go over them and screw the bracket underneath. In fact I have an idea for a desk that I would like to design but I am gonna need some help probably and from a carpenter. Not gonna say what they design is but it would be good if I can achieve it.
