We know our self so well, we sometimes forget about planning and start going for the brass ring

Glad it worked out Ashley. BTDT that myself. You get tired and you just want to get it over with and you have to pull away and look at the situation from a detached (out of body type experience) and suck it up and revert to your training and do what you have to do. Retrospect is a great teacher. Your description of being over the water and your heart rate....excellent. You have to fly over the water so you did the right thing, just enjoy the beauty and the experience.
Declaring an emergency is such a "not manly thing to do" for all of us....and it kills some. I wish we instructors would show people what actually happens when you do declare an emergency and you get on the ground safely....99.9% of the time...NOTHING!

Great story - caught me off guard though, I assumed the critical situation would occur over the ocean crossing... Good lesson.

Great pilot story. That would definitely be a difficult trip in a unfamiliar aircraft. Good job on getting yourself home safely. Keep up the excellent work, Dan. Safe skies my friend 🇺🇸🛩️

Great video! Dream flight to be sure, but man, O man. Flying over the ocean would have been pretty scary, but you put it into perspective. I appreciate your openness about your poor judgment and mistakes. A good lesson for us all.

I guess the parallel between flying over vast ocean not a problem but being home when it happens shows don’t get complacent

I note several recent GA light aircraft incidents/accidents/loss-of-life can be attributed to 'get-there-itis'.
If you NEED to be somewhere, fly Commercial, or drive.. Private light aircraft are not as forgiving in CAPABILITY, vs ability. What I mean is that GA aircraft may be CAPABLE to fly in IMC, does the pilot have the ablity of the workload required, especially if 'something' happens to make things worse... Mechanical things fail. Electronic things fail.. You, as the pilot, and even moreso as an IMC pilot, need to prepare for the worst-case-scenario in all phases of the flight. Vacuum pump failure... Magneto failure... Prop governor failure...
    Prepare for the worst!

In retrospect would it have been better with a copilot who was familiar with the aircraft?

For the single pilot IMC part, yes. I decided that the enhanced risk of flying over the water was a lot to ask another person to take.
