I've never seen this done before either, Carl Jacobson . It's a first in my own personal experience. But, surely someone else must have already thought of this as well. It just struck me odd one day that I'd never seen truly squared drawers on a band saw box. I've made many BS boxes, so I fully understand WHY BS boxes "always" have rounded drawer corners. But once I thought about it I realized that it's only that way out of convenience and that there are no real technical obstacles preventing it.
A lot of great stuff in this video. All the glue-ups look tedious, but you definitely came out with a stellar jewelry box. I also like the addition of the contrasting shims to make up the slight difference in dimensions of the drawer openings and the drawers.
Actually, Thomas Fr. Thomas Bailey, OSB , the alternating cycles of cutting and gluing isn't nearly as tedious as one might think. At least, not to me. I just glue then set aside while I work on other things.
I have never felt comfortable or able to make a bandsaw box till I saw your easy and straight forward method. Thanks so much for taking the time to make and video your efforts. First class tutorial. I shall be passing it around. Cheers Dave
I have seen a lot of band saw boxes, but this is the first with squared drawers like these. Like it a lot. I'll have to try that out. Thanks for posting.
Donnie G I'm glad you liked it. It's not always easy to come up with unique ideas and methods. But I'm very happy with how this idea worked out. Thank you for being here!
Jared English Hello, Jared. Actually, I've never seen this technique either. While I suspect I'm not the only person to ever come up with it, I am rather pleased to have thought of it on my own. That is worked so well is even more satisfying.
My mind just got blown away by the simplicity of the solution :D In the hindsight, o how simple! Awesome idea. I will try to reproduce your method in one of my projects for sure. Thanks for sharing and again AWESOME IDEA.
+y632rewww7fg43298jdm - Thank you very much! If you make one, feel free to send me some pictures that I can share in a future video. I appreciate your support.
Ian Thomas Thank you very much. Honestly, neither have I. I really wanted to make a BS box with truly square-cornered drawers.. I pondered it for a little bit and this was my solution. I'm very happen with the results. And the method opens up a lot of possibilities; this box is only one example of its potential applications. I was actually going to make this box in a more traditional manner. But I knew there had to be some way to make it a BS box, which makes it much quicker and simpler to construct.
johnnie52 Truth be known, I've never heard of it being done this way either. My main concern was being able to have the drawer separators end up in perfect alignment. I pondered it for a little bit and came up with what I felt to be the perfect order of operations to ensure that everything was guaranteed to come out just right.
Thank you, Randy Stuart ! The choices of music I go with sometimes annoys the hell out of people. But I think most people get it and find it entertaining. To some degree, at least :)
David Gunn To me, the royal blue flocking seems to be the most versatile flocking, in that it works well with nearly every color of wood. Other colors are cool too. But none seem to have such a wide appeal or work as well with so many different woods and projects. Thanks for watching!
If you own a band saw, WoodLogger , you owe it to yourself to try some sort of band saw box. The design possibilities are endless (check out Dave Owen's RUclips channel if you want to be inspired by some awesome BS boxes. Oh, and Ramon Gibbs... now that guy has made some mind blowing-ly great boxes). Best of all is how easy and painless they are to make. Seriously, they look very complicated to the unknowing, which is part of what makes them such a great genre. In reality though, once you grasp the concept of proper order of operations, you can make sooooooo many awesome boxes. Then it's an easy leap to make things like hidden drawers, trays within drawers, lidded BS boxes and so on. Thank you very much for watching and commenting. FYI, I should have another BS box video (one with paired drawers) out this month. And I'll probably make at least one in the future to demonstrate how to go about creating hidden drawers, since that seems to be something that stumps a lot of my fellow woodworkers at our club meetings.
Just doin' my thing, Fabian's Tiny Workshop ! Haha, I appreciate the kind words. Since I've been inspired by several of your projects I definitely always value your opinions.
Hey Steve, fantastic band saw jewelery box. the first thing I saw was the space saving thickneser/mitre saw stand, very clever. Then the neat square drawer box, very very clever. Lucky you have woody to think of projects for you to do.
Thanks, Rusty Panels . The flip top shop tool stand is from a design in, I believe, Wood Magazine. It is such a great item to have. Very handy. Speaking of Woody, he will be making a comeback as soon as I get caught up on things around here (in the shop and at the computer editing).
Thank you, Harry Watts . The recipients agreed with you! I only wish I'd made a larger batch. I have a feeling these might be a good selling item. I'll have to make some more at some point.
Cosmas B Yay, I'm glad that you like my video style. I put a LOT of time and effort into the editing process. It's good to know that others appreciate the results. Thank you very much!
Gorgeous Jewelry Box Steve, I never seen it cut this way before, and the cuts for the inside top drawers was a neat idea as well, Lots of Great Nuggets in this video, Thanks for sharing
Well done, sir. The economical use of your stock and the layout of the piece are more than commendable. As is the simplicity you used in its construction. But it's really about your use of the tools here that turned those laminated boards into a thing of beauty. Your rotatable planer/saw combo is genius. Never saw the like before. In the end, a beautiful piece, brilliantly executed. Your granddaughter has a treasure piece she'll cherish forever. Thanks for sharing.
Michael Meara Thanks! A finely tuned band saw is tool that is such a pleasure to work with. In general, the BS is one of the most versatile and useful tools in the shop. Those without have no clue what they are missing. The jig you mentioned is one I use pretty often. It makes a great surface for sawing small pieces to length.
Beautiful box Steve. Such a simple and brilliant idea. Also, I love the rotating table with the miter saw and planer. That's a great idea for a small shop like mine.
Thank you very much! Honestly, I was surprised that, until mine, I'd never seen band saw boxes with square cornered drawers (since this video, there have been a bunch of people who've made this one and variations thereof. I believe this video is at least largely responsible for that.). I love my flip top tool stand. It's a great item for any shop, especially smaller ones.
Steve Carmichael Hey Steve! Nice to see you here. I'm really happy with how the box(es) turned out. The accents not only add visual interest, but they also fill in the void created by the two saw kerfs. The wedge shape prevents any drawer contents from getting caught.
I like this. I was going to make a band saw box a couple weeks back, but my 1/2 inch blade was just too wide for any tight turns. I started doing something similar, but haven't been to my shop to finish it. I love the miter saw/ planer stand, a great space saver!
Great job!! I actually added a band saw to my shop arsenal about a year ago just because I watched someone make a band saw box and wanted to try it. I even put a vid up on my channel of the first one that I cut using a sapling stump. That band saw has become my favorite saw. I use it all the time for many things, band saw boxes included. But until now, they have all had rounded corners. But I will indeed be "borrowing" this idea for the square corners! Nice video!
+BirdsAdventuresInWoodworking - I appreciate your comment. Band saw boxes are fun to make and usually turn out pretty cool as well. I'm glad you like your band saw. They really are great and very versatile tools. "Borrow" away. That's why I shared the idea. Thanks for watching!
I've just recently found your channel, Steve. What a blast! I thought your trick carving was good and now you go and show me this... ..and then tell me to get out into the workshop and make something cool. You don't pull any punches, do you? Excellent work and entertainment: Thank you.

Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. The best part is that doing it this way ensures that your drawer dividers end up straight and exactly where they're supposed to be. Thanks for watching, Stephan Pöhnlein .
I haven't yet made a BS box, but I'm watching mass videos to get a handle on it. Yours really resonates. Honestly, I'm not much for the whole freeform thing...this is perfect for me!!! Thanks again and I look forward to more of your stuff ;-)
From the, holy crap why hadn't I thought of this sooner category! Brilliant build, beautiful wood choices & the shims make those drawers pop! Great job sir ! Cheers from Nova Scotia Mark
Mark Christopher There's a lot of good to be said for this sequence of operations. It's easy to do and the drawer dividers will always end up perfectly aligned. The pine shims you're talking about do add visual interest. But their main purpose is to fill the void left by the two saw kerfs. They are wedge shaped to ensure that objects in the drawers cannot catch on them and prevent the drawer(s) from opening. Thank you very much for watching!
Dropcord Workshop The two girls (my Wife and granddaughter) who received them really like them. I love them; they came out pretty cool. Thanks for watching! Oh, I like your username.
MRrwmac Thank you very much. The girl(s) who received these were both quite pleased. When I made them (the one featured in this video was made especially for our granddaughter, Elizabeth) my wife keep commenting about how beautiful they were (though she always has great things to say about my work). So I knew that the other one had to become hers.
Thanks, Michael Flynn . I'm sure others must have also come up with this or a similar technique, but I've never seen squared drawers in a BS box. I really wanted to come up with a reliable, sure-fire way to create drawers with hard corners but without the concern of trying to realign all of the individual carcass pieces. So I sat down and planned out a simple way to go about it. I'm happy to report that the technique worked perfectly!
This is the first bandsaw box I actually like enough to plan on making! Excellent job.Thank you for the video and inspiration. I also like your almost-subliminal coffee break "subscribe" message. It worked! : )
I love it Steve. I was trying to figure out how to make square drawers a month or so ago, and did a similar thing but with the table saw. Truthfully it was more of an experiment, your idea came out much better. P.S. don't sweat stuttering and such, we all have our things, I'm bald ;) I have really enjoyed watching all of your videos.
Hey, Janne Kronbäck . It's always nice to see you here. Thanks for watching. I hope you have a great 2015!

The visits are (unfortunately?) more sporadic now that you've decided to no longer upload readily available unwatched videos in the dozens. Or that's how I like to see it's going down. :) Happy New Year!
Steve that turned out amazing you really have a good eye for designing and what colors go well together and there placement these were the best band saw boxes i have ever seen congrats, all the best to you and yours
That's quite a compliment, Ron Sanford ! I appreciate that. I usually try to do unusual projects (or at least in an unusual way). Sure, some of my projects that are somewhat ordinary (there's always requests and special projects to tend to). But the ones where I get to introduce something new and unique to people are the ones I get the most satisfaction out of. Judging from the comment section, this one fits that category nicely. Thank you very much for the feedback.
I love the square drawer band saw box of yours! I am going to make this for sure, now I have like a bunch of boxes I want to make! Thank you! I am adding this link to a band saw type box video of mine to show the flocking!
VERY NICE! I like the blue on inside of drawers adds a really nice touch!after watching this I cant wait to get my new bandsaw .(end of February) Im now subscribed.
Steve French o had a craftsman 9" benchtop but it was garbage and burnt out not long after I got it. So dont have much exp but ive been saving for a 14" cant wait to see what its capable of. Hopefully stuff like this:)
Fantastic job Steve! I've never seen it done this way, very cleaver.

Thanks for watching, David Kuhns . Squared drawers in a band saw box are fairly rare, making it a perfect candidate for my channel!
Beautiful box, I like the contrasting woods and the vertical drawer!
Thank you, Scrap wood City ! I appreciate your being here.
Beautiful work, Steve!
Thanks, Matt Matthew Cremona . Quick and easy! Well, not counting the glue drying time.
Steve, you'r an extremley talented woodworker and I love your sense of humor
+Andrew Heater - Thank you, Sir!
Very cool video and a unique way to do this. Not a stranger to BS boxes I'm impressed. Great job Steve.
Donnie G I'm glad you liked it. It's not always easy to come up with unique ideas and methods. But I'm very happy with how this idea worked out. Thank you for being here!

Very nice! Loved it. Thanks for posting.
Gene Anthes And thank you for watching and leaving a comment!
Outstanding results Steve. I wouldn't have thought of that process to get square drawers. Opens up possibilities. Thanks for the great videos
I glad I was able to show you something new, Paul Desmond . Thank you very much, Sir, for watching and leaving feedback!
Awesome music!! And really enjoyed your wood working process and film editing.

Great box. One of the coolest bandsaw boxes I've seen!
Thank you, Jeff Springer !

Steve French o had a craftsman 9" benchtop but it was garbage and burnt out not long after I got it. So dont have much exp but ive been saving for a 14" cant wait to see what its capable of. Hopefully stuff like this:)

Oh yeah, a 14" will be able to handle this with no problem. My main band saw is a Rikon 14".
