Had the Mitsubishi 6K Hyper Heat unit installed. The unit is totally quiet…and super efficient. Best investment for me! Thank you for helping the masses!

I'm having a split system installed in a few days. Your comments have been very helpful and I now have a better idea of how to use the system.
    Many thanks.

You said you use both American Standard traditional heat pumps as well as Mitsubishi Hyperheat heat pumps, so could you give me a rough estimate of the cost difference between these two styles of heat pumps?

I have a cold climate heat pump with natural gas furnace for back up heat. It switches over from heat pump to gas at -15C. In northern ontario the heat pump heats the house really well. I find the heat pump heats the house more slowly and makes the temperature on each level of the house more consistent. Much more comfortable than the gas furnace. First season with the heat pump so ill see how the gas and power bills compare to previous years. Very happy so far.

What brand of cold climate heat pump did you go with?

@@cujo7240 I went with a Bryant 38MURAQ36AB3, 36000 BTU unit. I believe Midea makes these identical units for Carrier, Payne and a whole bunch of lesser known brands like Senville, Moveair etc. They actually slapped a Carrier badge on mine when they installed it. Mine was installed as part of the Enbridge rebate program which allowed for a $7200 CAD rebate. Works really well for heating and cooling. It's very quiet and using the ecobee thermostat I can switch it between gas and heat pump depending on the outdoor temperature. The heat pump heats down to -30C but is less efficient so it's less costly to use gas heat at temperatures below -10C from my back of the napkin math. The ecobee doesn't allow you to alternate between gas and heat pump based on electricity time of use pricing so I use the Samsung Smart Things app routines function to force the ecobee to use the gas heat during peak electricity pricing hours. I'll see what cost saving this allows for after this winter is over.

They do not work if cold outside but there is a "power" button on mine that turns on electric heater inside unit. No problems with cooling.

A standard heat pump can have issues when approaching freezing temperatures, but with a hyper heat model it can go down to nearly 0 degrees before seeing inefficient levels of output. Heat strips can take the highly efficient equipment and give you just 100% compared to the up to 400% you can achieve utilizing the heat pump instead of electric strips. Most of the time you can get the hyper heat model at a similar price to the cost of installing an electric heat strip with a non hyper heat model.

We live up a mountain where we get below freezing temperatures daily for 3 months and our 3 tons Fujitsu heatpump works flawlessly. The electric strip heat barely runs

The problem with Mitsubishi is they don't make a diy unit. Your forced into paying a outrageous price from greedy contractors
