On "My Car Story" we're in the Milwaukee WI on 10-27-19.
We're looking at a 1969 Chevrolet Corvette in Burgundy Paint. The car features the factory L89 427 CI V8 engine with 435 Horse Power, and a 4 speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Jeff Stranak. Jeff’s had this car since 2016. Turns out Jeff nephew Derrick is a Fan of My Car Story with Lou and sent me an e-mail sharing, his Uncle has a cool car he thought I’d like to feature. Well he was right. Jeff shares he went to an auction looking to buy a Camaro, and that car ended up selling, so he switched gears and became interested in this “Big Block” Corvette, and turns out he was the High Bidder.
ENJOY! Авто/Мото
I like the older ones and this is one of them. Mine was a 78 L82 but had to get rid of it because my illustrious neighbors would not leave it alone. Cars & boats do strange things to people who do not have them. This is a nice Vette. Treat it right & drive it right & it will go a long long way. Thanks for posting another great.
Hi Craig, Happy to read "This is a nice Vette" :-) My pleasure sharing this car with you. You're welcome, Lou
Nice vet, love the 427 & those side pipes...pure music to the ears.
Hi Tom Manley, Glad to read this is the sounds of music to you :-) Lou
For those who didn’t know, the L89 added aluminum heads to the L71 tripower solid lifter 427...very expensive when new, rare today, and added some weight reduction to the front end. Very desirable. Interestingly, I believe the exact same head # was part of the aluminum head option on 396 Camaros and Chevelles.
Lou - I have a C3 with the luggage rack and I like it! Have actually strapped duffle bags to it on long trips cause there ain’t much room behind the seats. And these days with cars lacking any chrome, any excuse to add chrome is ok by me
Hi Steve S, Thanks for sharing your knowledge, and happy to read you're actually someone who utilizes "the rack in the back" on your cool C3. Well done! Lou
I BELIEVE THAT WAS THE L-88 YOU ARE SPEEEKING OF.
@@scottbarker9058 The L88 had a single Holley carb not the Tri-Power and was way different internally.
The main advantage of aluminum heads on a Corvette,
is not that it reduced the weight of the car. It's where that weight was removed from. Aluminum heads lowered the center of gravity, thus improving handling.
These cars feel like you are sitting on the ground. My second car I owend was a 68 stingray 427 4spd . with the side pipes. Lotta good memories here.
Happy to read this car / video brings back good memories of your 68 Stingray :-)
Great report Lou and a great owner. I was 19 years old when this car was new and memories came back as I watched. Those pollution pumps were thrown away as soon as the new owner could get to his or her wrenches, thrown in the trash can. Looking at the tri power set up brought to mind Sunoco 260 gasoline, I think it was 110 octane in my area, Sunoco had 6 or 7 grades of gas at the pump back then. And I also like the full wheel covers. All you see on the restored cars today are rallye wheels but back then full wheel covers were an option that was seen from time to time.
Thanks Lou and keep 'em coming!
Hi customkey, Happy to read this car / video brings back memories for you :-) You're welcome, and stay tuned, Lou

Quite possibly the coolest car yet. What can I say that hasn't already been said? Simply the coolest vette to be seen on RUclips. All original too it seems. Great car great video. Thanks Lou.
Hi Story Teller, High praise :-) You're welcome, Lou
Car's a beast. Saw a C3 in lime green a few weeks ago with these wheel covers. Not really a fan of those but getting this car 'right' was the thing to do. Great installment, Lou.
Hi glen kepic, Happy to read you enjoy this "Beast" :-) Appreciate the kind words on this installment, Lou
@@loucostabile Thank you, Lou.
Just tonight I stop for refreshments after work and hear something good on the way out....''75 style C3, metallic blue, side pipes in chrome with headers. That era was not high performance but I don't think this was stock ;)
What a gem Lou you've outdone yourself with this one...awesome Vette.
Hi Anthony, Happy to read you enjoy this "awesome Vette" and thank you for the kind words! Lou
Best c-3 ever made! I am in the market! Just passed on a 69 convertible with 1,400 original! Wish it hadn't been modified! Have a great day Lou!

Well done Derrick!
Jeff King thank you!!
My pleasure Derrick, and thanks for the call :-) Looking forward to seeing you again. Lou
No problem Lou. We can talk next year about doing the ZL1
Awesome car and great video Lou love watching your channel. Reminds me of a story that my Uncle Robert used to tell me about when he left home after graduating from high school, he got a job working for a coca cola company driving a truck and his roommate that worked with him that had a black 1969 Corvette 427 435 horsepower 4 speed and he worked with him and he told me that he had never been in a car since that could go as fast as that Corvette could.
Hi PlymouthDuster 225, Happy to read this car brings back memories of Uncle Roberts Roommate's Corvette :-) Lou
This car is what dreams are made of . I see why someone ditched the hubcaps but , they look ok at certain angles . Those exhaust sound best when your inside the car . Nice car . Thanks for posting .
Hi Bud Lee, High praise for this car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou

Thank you gizmo ergos :-) Glad you're along for the ride.
Thanks for another great video, and as always the owner is a classic like the car. Love the part when you mentioned the color of the Corvette goes with the colors of the fall leaves, so true. Wish I was in that passenger seat, lots of fun times that day I bet.
Hi Glenn Balboa, Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing the ride with us, and you're welcome, Lou
This is my favorite body style of Corvette. The power train and side pipes only make it better. Love that color too.
High praise for this car :-)
Lou. Super job. Super beautiful car. Not a fan of N14 side exhaust but still a beauty. Nobody wanted those wheel covers when new. Today as the owner says diffucukt to find. L89 was an an $832 option. I have a C3, but not this Beautiful. Keep up tour tremendous videos.
Hi GS, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Thank you for sharing your knowledge, and the encouraging words. Glad to read you have a C3 too. Nice! Lou
Wish they would have carried over the N11 Off Road Exhaust from 68 but after noise complaints, not only did Chevrolet drop the N11 they mandated a 2-inch exhaust on all 69 cars including big blocks. Seems overkill and definitely killed power and your average 68 Vette will smoke the 69 engine for engine.
Wow! What a fabulous car! It means Vette! Really impressive.
Happy to receive a "Wow!" from you :-)
Very nice C3 Lou! Totally different era.
Hi Jeff King, Happy to read you enjoy this C3 :-) Lou

Hi Jay Wilder, Happy to read you "LOVE IT" :-) You're welcome, Lou
@@loucostabile 👍👍👍
the restrained burgundy, and factory wheel covers (located, and restored,) give this vehicle the kind of british restraint that a pistol-grip hemi challenger can never have. he's had this almost four years. must have cost a bundle to acquire. well worth it at any price. the Z-28, without the engine tilt, might well have been a better driver, hence: he was bid out of contention. but this is neato!!
Hi Scott Brady, Happy to read this car is "neato!!" :-) Lou
Another great one Thanks Lou
My pleasure and thank you cee dee :-)
Great looking car. Sounds good too. Thanks for sharing

great intro. nephew tells the tale and it pulls up - sideways for the shot. spectacular 1 of 1 Vette. Ü
Hi woofer devlin, Happy to read you enjoy that intro :-) Lou
Awesome Lou《☆》I've always heard that the tri-power setup gets good gas mileage when driven sensibly on the center carburetor :*: Open up the other 2 carbs & meet the beast :*: Thanks for sharing Lou & Jeff🤓☻🤠🍭
Hi BDOG JR, Happy to read you have met the "Beast" :-) You're welcome, Lou
Beautiful car
Glad you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
Hi Lou,
All American right there, how good is it with side pipes.
I am surprised you didn't mention it's the rare L89 option which is aluminum headed 427.
Super rare Corvette sounds absolutely tough. The things they got away with back in 1969, side pipes.
Another great video Lou.
Louis from Australia 👍
Hi Louis Kats, Happy to read you enjoy the rarity of this Corvette :-) Thank you for viewing, and sharing kind encouraging words on the video too, Lou
Beautiful.
Glad to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
I had a set of real Dayton wires which were Chrome and it really popped they were very high dollar back then. Looked really good with dark colors.
Thank you for viewing and sharing.
That luggage Rack is a option for Your t-tops or a suit-case great option I owned a 69 L89 with a factory m-22 3:55 posi and no power steering or brakes bought it in 1979 for 7 thousand Canadian great car.
Hi John, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Lou
Just curious, did that car have Canada documentation showing the M22?
Music to my ears tri power always sounds great
Nice :-)
Sweet vette. Have to love the big Block four speed.
Fun Corvette for sure :-)
So cool Lou!
I agree about the rear luggage rack.
It is actually functional... but it looks awful!
My ‘70 Charger had that on the option list. And it is rare. Glad Mine doesn’t have that option.
A column shifted auto Hemi with a bench is “rare” as well! 🙃
Hi drippinglass, Happy to read you enjoy the "cool" Corvette :-) Lou
Luv this car
NICE!
Fantastic car with a great color.
Hi Chad, Happy to read you enjoy the looks and color of this car :-) Lou
Great car! Quite a "mechanical presence". I had never thought about how few 435hp cars were made. More than L-88s but still not many...

They made over 2,700 435hp (L71) cars but only 390 of them had the aluminum heads (L89).
Great car story and owner
Hi acts2211, Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) Lou
Lou., WOW! Another sexy machine! In my mind's eye, this particular model Vette is the most perfect shape, most balanced looking. That console is perfect as well! Sounds great! Looks Great! On a scale of 1 to 5, I give her an 8 !!!! I hold back a couple of points only because the backseats are kinda small (insert mischievous smile here).
Hi ImTheDaveman, Happy to receive a "WOW!" from you :-) Lou
Very nice!
:-)
Nice find
This one called me up :-)
If you came back alive from Nam in 69. This is the car that coulda been harder to live through. Real beasts
I bought a set of those wheel covers on eBay to see how they would look on my '92 Caprice Woody Wagon, I never got them dirty, kept them a few years and sold them on Craigslist and sold them for $250 more than I paid for them, man those things are heavy too!
Hi Clark Griswold, Well done on the hub cap transaction! Lou
Nice color
Glad to read you enjoy this color :-)
Favorite color! That maroon is amazing! Side pipes look amazing. iirc when you ordered the side pipes, they didn’t have mufflers, it was a straight through design, might be wrong though. Call me crazy, but I’d have to take a 350-350 over the 427 Tri Power, handles better, and I think the small block cars just had better road manners overall. Very cool Vette tho, I’ve got an 81 that I love, and one day I want to get my hands on a chrome bumper car!

Hi George, Thanks for sharing, Lou
My uncle has a black on black 1969 427 with 700 miles side pipes 4 speed just sitting in a barn in Creswell Oregon. All original. Barely a slight patina. Optioned out. What's the value?

Lou, where did he find the stat that there’s only 8 L89 Corvettes with the N14 option?

I am a Ford dude now!! But growing up my first love of my life was my uncle's 69 sting ray 327 4 speed car, same color as this one sidepipes too!!it had a removable hard top and a rag top was folded up in back! Yes I would smack my mother for this baby!! Video sound of the engine must be different from life sounds?? Or baby had leaky header, or donut gasket, or lifters needed rockers adj
Scotty Jones
It’s a solid lifter engine.
They tap.
@@drippinglass those one's were a tapping?? Hurt my feelings ,when heard that whacking even over clutch fan !! My belly still hurting, still won't take much, to fix that!! Baby is one fine machine!!

You ever hear a /6 Mopar?
They were solid lifter up to 1980 and 1981...
They sounded like a Singer Zig-Zag sowing machine at idle!
Hi Scotty Jones, Happy to read this car / video brings back memories of your Uncles 69 :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Factory side pipes!
Yes
As wonderful as this car is, my favorite body styles are still the C2 and the C5 even though they are vastly different. After C5 they started to look like "generic supercar" if there is such a thing.
Hi David Broughall, Happy to read you enjoy this wonderful car, and yes the C2 design is awesome too :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Smog pumps were not on every car. Only California cars had them..
Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge.
No sorry, that is incorrect. Every single 1969 Corvette whether small block or big block even L88 and ZL1 left St Louis with a smog pump. The Chevy engineers felt the smog pump with its minimal power draw was a better way to meet the emissions standard as opposed to changing the tune and reducing timing as this would have had a greater impact on performance.
Lou I love the car. ,This owner is very new,I believe this is a clone, that he purchased, there Mustangs and cudas, and Vetts now that are being clone, these numbers in the engine can’t be verified

Beautiful color but I'd need a chair lift to get in and out!
Happy to read you enjoy the color of this car :-) It can be a little tricky getting in and out of for sure.
In 1969 that was not required in any of the other 49 states as well as Canada

I TAKE IT THERE WERE NO MUFFLERS ON THE EXAUST??
Doesn't sound like it :-)
Yes they had mufflers, they were built into the sidepipes.
The starter didnt sound so hot ask him how many starters he puts in a year maybe thats why he dosent run it much or dosent he mentioned it
Hi Jerry, Hmmm, didn't seem to notice the starter your hearing, Lou
@@loucostabile it could be 454 did ya check the numbers g m had a recall on the origanl 427 s did ya know that and it had to deal with the starters on all of the big blocks from 65 to 69 i had one not even the dealers today even new it how about that i can prove it ya wanna know
I’s a car , it supposed to be driven. Maybe that’s why it sounds like a freaking Kenworth instead of a Vette. Take it out and open it up and blow the crap out of it. If you can afford to buy it , you should be able yo maintain it and not sit in a garage and look at it all day. Drive it , things go wrong fix it. Either the sound quality is way off or that motor needs to be gone thru❗️🇺🇸
