I have a cheap no name one I paid $20 on Amazon 2 years ago when I started fermenting, sourdough and dehydrating. Then, when you go to Makolu, you don’t need to boil the cabbage.!

This video was so awesome. I am so happy I am not the only one stocking up, I am mostly out of fear to be honest! I am stocking up on canned fruits and veggies mostly for my kids.
A Canadian, it was interesting to hear your perspective. While i hope the tariffs don't happen, we can all learn things from this. It's always been a good thing to buy local when you can, grow what you can, eat what's in season, etc. And to buy or stock up on things when they are on sale.
You need to watch more RUclips’s. I looked at the list and I don’t buy much from either country. Check out Dining on a Dime. She analyzed the list as well and goes through it on video. She came up with the same conclusion.
Did a pantry challenge for last couple months due to job lost. I truly learned a lot!!! I was always watching people prep . But when it comes right down to it and the pantry is all you have , and you can’t afford to stock up , you better know it’s going last and know what to buy! Have food available that makes more one meal. Forget chips, cookies , pre packages of food. If you have rice ,flour, sugar, yeast, cornmeal , peanut butter, oatmeal that’s not microwave, pasta’s, different cans of tomato products , beans , meat . You can do without anything else.
This comment section …. Dear Lord! Jen, thank you for trying to help. I’m just trying to prepare for higher prices. I live in a small apartment and just don’t have much room to freeze things. I do always have a pretty strong pantry, but just know I need to keep that going. I guess what I’m saying is people need to be kind. Keep what pantry and freezer prep you can. That is all Jen was trying to do. 🤦🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️

JEN! This video is so timely! Great ideas on preserving. I only think about that in the fall when I have a harvest but this is a great time to buy in the next month before prices could go up. Winter isn’t a great time for tomatoes in MI so I won’t be preserving them….canned tomatoes are the better way to go because they are picked fresh and canned when they are in season. I do freeze peppers all year long though because they are so easy to freeze and I can use them in soups and cooked food. I didn’t know you can freeze avocados so easily! Great tip. Great steal on that chicken! Thanks so much for all you do; you’re the best!
Thank you Jen for all the information. I had a small garden this year and got a lot of cherry tomatoes and plum tomatoes. I did freeze them and use them in salsa and pasta dishes. I also wanted to tell you look fabulous ❤
Thanks for the reminder about vacuum sealing and freezing the avocado. I do freeze cucumber, sometimes in slices, some shreds and sometimes I puree it but it just goes into my smoothies in the morning so it’s fine. I forgot the syrup comes from Canada. I use that all the time so I must stock up some more. That was a great find on the chicken!
❤❤❤ Thank you for sharing the need to store/stock ahead, not panic buying. I was taught to do this, buying seasonally (when cheapest and prolific) and stocking for other seasons. It also makes it easy to make pantry meals when real life gets tough. 😊
Let’s just say if this goes in to effect Americans are going to learn real quick what produce is in season and which is not here in the USA. I mean tomatoes and zucchini do not grow in the winter here.
I freeze my tomatoes that I grow. I quarter them and when you thaw them out in a colander, the skins fall off and they are then perfect for chili and pasta dishes. I also freeze fresh peppers& onions that I grow, green beans and carrots from farmer's market, shred potatoes for hash browns and freeze. It all helps out and tastes great.
I freezer peppers, onion and celery. I cut them up and freeze in bags in about how much I would throw in a dish. I defrost then drain and get rid of extra liquid. I vacuum sealed rice yesterday. We had a great pantry for emergencies that when Covid hit. It got us through when my hisbaf's work, self employed contractor went downhill for a time period. Sticking up again and I don't know why I haven't. This going on made me realize again that I have to always be prepared for my family. Canned tuna and chicken too for protein and peanut butter.
Today I made what started out as 2 week menu but it’s now 3-4 weeks. I made the menu from freezer and pantry food. I’m only going to have one small 50.00 grocery order in February.
I find that buying the already frozen onions and peppers, berries and vegetables from Walmart is a much better deal than buying fresh and freezing it myself. We have also stocked up on canned vegetables (whole corn, creamed corn, green beans, peas, beets and zucchini) from Walmart and Sams. We always have 2 years stock of all baking supplies, bread flour, rice, oats, grits, masa, yeast and shortening that we rotate through. We have a full deep freezer of venison and we fish for our own bass, trout and salmon. We figure in an extreme pinch, we could do reasonably well nutritionally for 2 years. Hopefully the midterms will be a stopgap.
I admire you for not being afraid to speak your mind. I am of a like mind and also live in a red state, but I am not shy about expressing my opinion. I think Mexico would impact us the most at the grocery store. I had made a mental note that I would increase my tomato, peppers etc in my garden. In California on the central coast and around Santa Barbara there are lots of Avocado orchards, but probably not enough for the whole country
Peppers freeze well for dishes where they will be cooked. I grow a ton of peppers both sweet and hot in the summer. I dice them then freeze and use them in dishes where I need peppers.. even fajitas. I do this for onions too. Tomatoes freeze ok for recipes that call for Cooked tomatoes. I can whole cherry tomatoes and use them in cream sauce recipes.
Great video, Jen -- thanks for sharing! I'm going to try to make the pickled cucumbers -- always wanted to, but was a little afraid 😊. Re the Food Saver, I love mine and use it frequently.
I freeze cherry tomatoes at the end of the summer when their are tons left and you can't eat them. I just wash then put in freezer baggies. And they are just perfect to add to a pasta sauce you are making etc. Cook perfectly. And unrelated but I want to tell you how much I love you more for that Lasagna noodle tip to just soak in hot water for around 13 min. Oh my gosh. It works perfect and I hate that part cooking the noodles and I hate the no cook ones. What a life save and so simple. And works out perfect. I think even way better because they dont overcook. hugs for that xo. I really do need to invest in one of those foodsavers or a similar one. I have a friend who loves hers. And I think storage would be a lot better for some things. hugs
