You can also tell the difference between liver failure and malabsorption by the PLT count: -In liver disease there can be low PLT count 2/2 low TPO production and PLT seq. in the spleen -In malabsorption there is usually normal PLT count :) btw, love your teaching!

Hemoglobin is high, hematocrit is high and all members on fathers side has Polycythemia vera but the patient's RBC count is normal. Liver AST 400+ ALT 500+ as well. Any ideas, advice is appreciated. In liver disease there is a new balance to hemostasis, so you can be hypocoagulated or hyper depending on the scale shift, but what's is the direct relationship between serum albumin and coagulation? I've searched far and wide and the newest research studies say that low albumin is a predictor for venous embolism therefore hypercoagulability, and I can't understand the mechanism since in liver disease the liver damage lowers serum albumin and you can be hypocoagulated. Can you help me understand?

To answer the last question - would you check for factor 8 levels and if its normal its AICF?
