    Throttle body EFI is basically an electronic carburetor - and there's nothing wrong with that at all in the application Eric is using it for.

      @Chase Postell Can you approach the cost and ease of this with something better? This is such a win over the original carb for the budget and low-risk install, it's an easy sell. Absolutely right about boost (and there's a note on the unit about boost). I've done a lot of reading on MegaSquirt and such and this is so off-the-shelf, you don't have to be Eric The Car Guy to benefit from a DIY.

    • @jameswyatt1304
      @jameswyatt1304 5 лет назад

      Mine said something similar about $2K to add it to a '92 Seca XJ600. My son just rebuilt the carbs instead and it's getting about 50mpg. Now I'd like to convert one to electric, but a new electric bike's price tag merits considering a conversion.

    • @willjohnsonjohnson
      @willjohnsonjohnson 5 лет назад +7

      Good luck finding a modern truck for $1500 that isn't rusted to hell. A new vehicle would be 200+ a month or $1400 a year. If you put that same amount into an old vehicle each year it's still worth it, especially if you consider the insurance savings.

    Finally found the video series again. I have also bought a sniper EFI kit and did some serious digging and found a throttle bracket that works. I’ve already done test fits and verified that it causes no interference at all. It’s a summit racing branded part part number 210241. And for coolness it is offered in various colors. But otherwise it is just like the first bracket you showed in the video. But bigger so that it clears the sniper.

    That looks so impressive :-D
    I like your fix for the throttle bracket :-D, perhaps a spot of weld on the underside of each extention would have been a good idea.
    The exhaust tap in plate is so simple, i did wonder how they would do that.
    The only thing i dislike is the controller being part of the body, never mix electronics with heating/cooling cycles, solder cracks can form.
    Just my opinion only :-)

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  5 лет назад +1

      Spot welds weren't necessary. Once it's bolted down, the angle keeps it in place and it doesn't move around. I wasn't happy about the controller placement either, but it makes it so that you don't have to mount it separately. As always, thanks for the comment.

    • @brettt8246
      @brettt8246 5 лет назад +1

      That's so it can replace a carburettor without needing to replace the inlet manifold. Of course, fitting an intake manifold with port injection, intake runners, and a plenum chamber would be the go, specially Naturally Aspirated, using this Holley system with forced induction wouldn't be much different power wise, as Eric is mainly after better idling control

    • @jackass123455
      @jackass123455 5 лет назад +2

      @@brettt8246 actually he's after beter fuel control because he realized that a boosted carb setup can never be tuned properly for most driving conditions like a naturally aspirated setup. A carb + boost is ok for racing where it's under high load most of the time. But the whole way a carb normally works is at odds with a blowthrough boost setup

    • @brettt8246
      @brettt8246 5 лет назад

      @@jackass123455 Yeah, that was what I was implying, and what Eric said in another video, he could get the mixture at a good ratio at cruising speed, at the detriment of idle control, and vice versa, and why he lost a piston due to detonation issues

    • @two_number_nines
      @two_number_nines 5 лет назад

      I mean its understandable why the outter shape look like a carb (so it can be a bolt on solution), but I see no reason why the air passage is split into 4 tubes that exactly look like as if they tried to style it like a carb intentionally.

    I spent the hole video thinking, but that's a carburetor, that the heck am I missing?!?! xD

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  5 лет назад +1

      If you weren't aware of that, then you might also be interested to know that at one time there was a mechanical fuel injection system used on European vehicles back in the 80's called LJetronic. It had a lambda sensor and everything. You could also tune it with an allen wrench.

  • @AB-80X
    @AB-80X 3 года назад

    Well, more often that not, you have to make linkage brackets or buy them. I'm over doing that, and have been for years, and Brina from Lokar is always very helpful. You might pay a bit, but I've yet to receive a box from them that did not contain a lot of "in case of" extra items I did not actually pay for.
    As far as the carb hat goes? They can be hit and miss, so that is what it is. Lastly, the stud that holds on your hat? Well, that's what you get for running a Demon, and not a Holley. If you had a Holley carb, it would have been the same size. Just take a tap and cut the bottom part of the rod down so that it fits with the TB. Then you will keep it snug with the hat. Easy.

    Vapor lock is caused by the vaporization of fuel before it gets to the fuel pump. This was, of course, when fuel pumps were run by the engine. It occurs when the liquid fuel changes state from liquid to gas while still in the fuel delivery system. This disrupts the operation of the fuel pump, causing loss of feed pressure to the carburetor or fuel injection system, resulting in transient loss of power or complete stalling. Restarting the engine from this state may be difficult.
    Nice try Holley Sniper EFI.
    But wait, there's more . . . . .
    Hey, Eric why not drill the carb hat bolt hole bigger and tap it?

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  5 лет назад

      Actually, the higher fuel psi of fuel injection helps eliminate vapor lock. That point is moot though since I never had any issues with it.

    There are reasons for going with that system as it is fairly universal and it looks like a carby. But I would first consider what can be found in many a salvage yard or action site bolted to mustangs crown vics and numerous other Fords in the way of port injection instead of throttle body injection especially if you want to avoid cooking pistons.
    Getting an inlet manifold (or a whole car) for under $200 adding new injectors and a Holley ecu would possibly come in cheaper than that system and be many times better unless you want it for the look.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  5 лет назад

      Ford EFI manifolds have an inlet on the passenger side. To go with that, I'd have to completely redo my cold side piping. Thus routing it right along the exhaust in front of the engine. Hence the reason I changed it in the first place. Then, I'd have to also purchase a stand alone computer to run that system and wire it. By the time you were done with that, you'd be into it WAAAAY more the $200 and the return would hardly be worth it. Not to mention the time and effort of going to the salvage yard, removing the parts you need, and then installing them on the car. Time is worth more than money to me. Thanks for your input.

      EricTheCarGuy . The comment wasn’t intended for you really it was for anyone who may be considering that system as an alternative. Last time I priced a system like that it came to over $2600 where an ecu with harness came in at just under $2200 looking at the Holley website it seems to be the other way around now.
      Some of the intake manifolds can either be rotated at the plenum or come with the intake on the other side. The other alternative is to find a friendly machinist who will weld injector bungs into a carby manifold and make a throttle adapter to bolt on in place of the carby. They can make it look sort of like a carby or turn right angles where ever you want it.

    Nice work. Having lived throught the CARB to TBI to MPI transition I can verify the TBI will help with the idle and fuel management issues. MPI adds no additional benefit in this case for $3K more.
    Is it made in the USA?

    I'm seriously looking forward to your install of this setup on the Fairmont as well as your overall opinions post install. I've been looking at doing FI on my SBC in my K5 Blazer, and have been on the fence because I've heard a lot of mixed reviews on these aftermarket TBI setups.

    Can't wait for the setup video! Just one question, though! Why not mount a "proper" MPI EFI system? I mean this looks like a glorified SPI kit. Sure, it's bolt on, but wouldn't it cost about the same to mount a full MPI system with injectors near the intake valves, not the top of the manifold?

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  5 лет назад

      Installation video drops tomorrow morning. I didn't go for MPFI because it would require a lot more time, money, and work. Work that I don't have time for right now because I'm deep into my truck build. Don't knock this system just because it's TBI. It's very capable and atomizes the fuel well. Also, if you think about it, just like my carburetor, having the fuel injected at the throttle body actually helps cool the intake charge, by up to 100º. Nice to have with a turbo engine.

    They both need quite a lot of time to install/setup but once they're finally all calibrated they run forever. Until of course one of those 5 million wires breaks and it throws an error code and won't start.

    That's a neat setup. I expected it to be like the old GM TBI units, but that is pretty slick with the "jet" holes perfectly spaced around the bores. I'd be super interested in seeing the setup on that - I'm assuming it can all be done through that little screen there, without a laptop?

    Holley did it wrong.They should have gone with port injection. With throttle body with hood on you still get vapor lock which is the real problem almost all folks are still getting vapor lock because it the intake by the heads when they get close to 180 degrees you get vapor lock same as a carb. Holley make it right with a intake to match 8 fuel infectors.

    That bracket you've made could easily let go. Use Loctite, or two holes on at least one side or weld the extensions on.

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  5 лет назад

      It's held up fine so far. You might have missed that the fasteners were locking fasteners.

    • @vedranlatin1386
      @vedranlatin1386 5 лет назад

      Indeed I did miss it. I still wouldn't trust it though as any movement in something like this would tend to unscrew the thing. With two holes, fasteners only hold the two surfaces together so any rotation forces present as a shear force to a bolt body and that will never go. With one hole, bolt becomes a pivot and rotation forces are balanced only by the friction between surfaces. When friction fails, you get movement. This bit me before :)
      In the end it's not a critical component, you've probably torqued them silly, and roadside fix would be easy to do, so it kind of fits in with the whole hot-rod experience :)
