I've been drawing all my life and have had the privilege of working both for AAA game studios and also movies. I have taught foundation drawing at the University of Cincinnati and it's time now to give back. I understand the frustrations of learning art in general but specifically, drawing. I was the same kid Bobby...printing out and writing out all the combos and fatalities, and was made fun of for it...little did I know there were artists making a living creating these worlds.

When 90% or more of the individuals you meet cannot do what YOU can do... just consider the default, banal, presumptuous, pretentious responses to that fact. 💪😎✌️ It is what it is, though. Granted, it's *embarrassing* to see how humanity operates, but as I just stated... it is what it is.
I had one of those ribbon printers and I'd have it running for hours to print the GameFAQs guide to all the levels in Super Mario World.
My husband was that kid. 🥰 He’s still a nerd and so am I. 🤣

I think one of the biggest things I learned when it comes to sketching is being okay with making bad work, instead of trying to make every sketch perfect. I try to make my first sketches bad *on purpose* to get all the bad energy out, so-to-speak.
Sometimes you can find amazing ideas amidst those sketches
@@cheesyborgor8394 Sometimes the sketches aren't even bad at all! Just allowing yourself to make the mistakes mitigates all that tension.

I'm not personally afraid of clowns but knowing some people who are afraid of clowns, it's something about the uncanny valley of clown makeup that makes the clown's face seem "not quite human." Guess some people are just more susceptible to it, maybe they saw a clown at a young age when you're still learning what a human face is, and seeing a clown just throws a terrifying wrench into it.
This. And also they're just way too extroverted and unpredictable. Creeps me the f out not knowing what they'll do or say.

something about the way they moved seems jittery. I've seen some shows when I was younger and on youtube and it's the same as I remember, they act foolish like a child or a boy holding a ballon skipping around and the. change their movements suddenly or freeze as the crowd laughs.

I feel like they will be prancing around as if in a field of flowers holding a balloon, and suddenly charge at me full speed..
@@BlackRose-rp7kv Yes!! Their behaviour has always scared me so much! Acting like a child while being an adult always creeped me out. Along with their pale faces and red cheek and noses and I think they can be very scary
I never thought I would enjoy someone talking this much. I love spending time watching you playing around and the way all your characters were put together piece by pieces was so fun.

Storytelling is a HUGE process. There are so bloody many aspects to it, most people wouldn't understand. I just finished the 4th book in my series of six (2021-2026). What does that mean? In this case, I outlined, wrote, developed, edited (yes, all types), formatted, designed, and published ~600,000 words (4 books of 6). Additionally, there are 350+ non-A.I. illustrations distributed within those four books. It was an *INSANELY DIFFICULT* endeavor. Books five and six launch over 2025 and 2026, but I gotta be honest with y'all... it's been bloody exhausting. I don't know anyone else on the planet who has done what I have (alone). I can't say that I'm surprised by that, either.

@@ShivamSanatani-cc5kj Possibly, yes. 🙂 Granted, my "Tolkien-style" storytelling isn't for 90% of the people I've encountered over the past 30+ years. In fact, I can't remember the last person I met who actually *reads* (books). Sure, everyone rushes through social media posts, watches movies, scans Starbucks menus, and plays video games, but very, very, very, VERY few people actually, legitimately *read*. It is what it is, though! 🙂

What are they called?
I've been so scared to start designing my characters because I wanted to be able to draw what I see in my head right away, but I think I'm just going to start anyway 😈🤘
Im in a tattoo apprenticeship, and i had not drawn in a decade. So i fummbled a couple of times at the star, but only a few months later, I'm wow-ing my mentors. Catching up to my old skill level so quickly has been a huge cofidence boost.

When I aimlessly draw, the things that come out always lack a soul. It is hard (not impossible) to put a soul to a drawing even if it was inspired by things that follow my other drawings. Inversely, I have a working story to create molds for characters. When I hear or see certain words, different tones in music, even looking at characters in anime and going over how could one of my creature contend with that based on the predefined rules of my creatures, those inspirational points and or challenges give reason for my characters to exist, and thus I build the design around the soul. The second process is terribly slow, but after a year I have a binder with over 24 drawings in it, and I don't dislike any of them or doubt I did a good job. Not all of them are finished, they don't need to be, because they each have a personality, a story within the larger story I've made. None of them come out the way I imagine them, but most of them still encapsulate the original image, even some of the very rough sketches. This process seems backwards to what you recommended.

I so freaking appreciate how frank and to the point you are! You aren't hiding anything about this process, you're being honest, and speaking from experience and the heart. Bonus points you're funny. Way too many artists out there only show the "presentable" things - the presentable thumbnail, the presentable draft, all giving the (clearly) false impression they're just pulling these things out of their head and putting it on the paper without a hitch and flawlessly. It's nice to see if you're not an aspiring artist seriously trying to learn - but incredibly frustrating and a huge disservice if you are. So thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for making videos like this, this is a huge help!
the truth is, i needed this somehow, absolutely nothing was pressuring me to draw but staring at a blank sheet of paper over and over again lost on what to draw or just getting frustrated for not doing it right felt annoying until i saw this video on this rainy night almost appearing as if the world was telling me "hey i think you need this", i made a few drawings scribbling, i thought it wouldn't work much but somehow over time my mind relaxed from all this frustration just to let go of my hand and invent things that i didn't think i would do, if i could i would thank you very personally, sincerely
Maybe if I like some of them I'll invent enemies for my silly D&D campaigns, or do that card game I've been thinking of, or create things for that made-up series/movies I have in my head that maybe one day will become reality

while watching this video i was doing the map of my game, then bobby said "you have no idea of what you're drawing and then you end up liking it" and i looked at the map and realized that it was actually geographically correct and that it could tirn into a supercontinent that makes sense! i'm actually shocked that all the continents of the map match perfectly without even thinking about it
I took my sketchbook to Dragon Con 20 some odd years ago to show artist…and they made a comment on how all my characters looked stiff and I need to work on that. Great advice, didn’t even realize that was an issue.
been following a few of your lessons for the past couple of weeks and i just wanted to say how much more I've improved because of your studies, more specifically the fabric and skull anatomy videos were substantial to my own growth. the way you're able to explain things and break them down for beginners like myself really attests to the level of teaching quality you provide!

I’ve been doing this for characters all along WITHOUT REALIZING IT! (I call it a collage of photos tho). But I can confirm, it does help, even more so when you have the character’s personality first
Great video as always! Unironically, I've started to incorporate more thumbnail sketches in my design process after watching your video "500 Creature Thumbnail Challenge" last year. 👀
I did 150 thumbnails with a ballpoint pen. Some ideas turned out pretty decent, I have to say. But others, not at all haha
The thing is that now I have 150 character prototypes that I can use for my personal project, "Zeitgeist: O Espírito do Tempo", which is the book that I'm currently working on.
About "how to add more dynamism to a thumbnail sketch", I think that what may help is to practice using references first, especially photographs (figure drawing). Paying attention to how the major masses of the human body relate to each other in a figuring drawing can help you to boost your sense of volume, balance and gesture in your designs.
Also, when sketching a character I think if you put them holding a sword, scythe, hammer etc, or casting some sort of spell it can add a lot to the storytelling and improve the stiffness of the design/pose.
And of course as you said, in the thumbnail stage I think that the silhouette is the most important aspect that we should keep in mind.

Hello! I've been watching your channel for a couple weeks now I think. Even joined the discord, which I am still reading through. But for now I must say this: I have been drawing my entire life, and I've consumed so many tutorials, and had many art classes, but I have never had anyone say some of the things I have heard you say during your drawing sessions.
Like in this one, it was about just making the line work even when you put it in the wrong place. I feel like your videos are full of nuggets of advice like this that I needed to hear when I was younger. I've always wanted to be a professional artist, and currently I work as a Graphic Designer, with some illustration work. However, it was YOUR CHANNEL that has finally helped me gain a little more confidence about my line work. I have been sketching thumbnails with ink pens in my little sketchbook with your videos on, and listening to you while you are sketching, and I am so happy with all my results!
Turns out, you can't just go buy some confidence at the store. So, I'm not sure where people get confidence. But I will say this, forcing myself to use an ink pen for sketching like this is life-changing. So um.... Thank you sir. Much gratitude for all your videos.

I wish I would’ve found your channel earlier, I’m working on my first portfolio for internships right now and although I do have ideas, I found myself using the same scheme again and again and lately not really enjoying the process of my work. This brought the fun in it back and forced me to think outside the box more and more, thank youuu !!! Also your character designs are extremely interesting and creative
So, my parents rented Killer Klowns from Outer Space several times when I was under 4 and my fear is like my third oldest memory. Once, in my 20s, I took too much Molly and I spent the following week sure that a drifter clown with a knife was going to open the back door of my house and stab me to death. When you overdose to a certain degree it basically dumps your entire serotonin supply for days, and you spend the next week flitting back and forth between feeling regular and intense, undeniable fear, and a clown was the embodiment of that for me.

As an artist who's a perfectionist and overthinks, this exercise is honestly so helpful! I've always struggled with wanting to get my exact thoughts on paper and I realize that it's kind of holding me back. I'm so glad this video showed up on my recommended feed.

Masterful how you subdued the music as we went outside the Club and dubbing in the outside Club street sounds - it instantly took me back to the Club days where you'd feel like you are missing out cause the music was blasting away inside

oh my god i really needed this video to focus on art finally in whole summer. i took my sketchbook and ended up doing some wood girl too but an heroin one with some pigtails hooked with chains and stuff. also a died bloody machinist with a ballet skirt that died bc practising ballet being a man. im so inspired, thank you so much!

recently a breakthrough i had is finally getting how the hell perspective works in a practical matter, it just kinda suddenly clicked when I was doodling things with a vanishing point, now i can free hand things way better without reference

It's repetition. It's okay that your stuff is cartoony because you just don't have enough experience practicing line weight.

I will always be a traditionalist at heart. Digital art is fantastic but nothing matches the feeling of pencil to paper.

I done this a couple of times. Albeit skipping the sketching. One of my favorite times doing this was trying to create Little Red Riding Hood, but as rogue. During the exploration, I learned that she is rather timid from her previous run in with the wolf. At first I thought she was just the quiet mysterious girl. Now she is like a cheetah in need of a Labrador to help her out of her shell.
your style reminds me of Sheogorath's concept art, a character from Skyrim. you can just google "sheogorath concept art", he's standing there with a small servant near him. great drawings man🔥
i love these more natural content, just conversation with your subs, i was scared of clowns as a kid and even as a teen, idk exactly why but their happy smile feels like hiding something, now i kinda like their creepy psycotic style and am more afraid of taxes idk

i was terrified of clowns as a kid and even as an adult (mostly because all the clowns i was exposed to when i was young were like, horror movies and actual murderers, and also those creepy "we dont have a clown statue..." stories. also homestuck.) but then just randomly a switch flipped in my head a couple years and i decided to get into clowns. im not afraid of them at all anymore, it rules.
if anyone has a genuine clown phobia rather than just kind of being predisposed against them it probably wont help but you should try drawing a friendly little clown guy yourself and see if you still hate him. human minds are so powerful.

Hello! I found your video after 4 months of art block. I lost much of my art skills during those months, so for the past 2 weeks, I've been drawing everyday to relearn. This is very helpful, and next time i do draw (which is sure to be soon,) I’ll apply the character design tips you taught.

I grew up on mortal combat 👊 too 😂🧐😎♏ I'm 39 your 🎨 artwork is dope I would put in the code at the beginning to do all the fatalities
i use paper too, it becomes a point of what you are familiar with. sometimes, you just have to use paper to get the point across

I think what terrified me about clowns as a kid was how jarring the image of them was? If that makes sense. That, and certain displays in IT for example, like that shower scene, where it's just Pennywise's head sticking out of the drain, the image of that stuck with me and kinda rattled my brain in a way. That particular instance made other clowns scary to me for years to come. But yeah, like, the image of them was unnerving, I suppose.
I can’t explain why but this video gave me hippie with a rifle, scared little ram with a giant sword, polite orc with vintage style, and scary giant Angel creature
(I love the Angel and the hippie I gotta refine these designs)
I know for sure that whoever the cutest are the most scariest when turning to horror. So for me, kids are the scariest
