  • For the MBTA Commuter Rail's South Coast Rail project, some creativity was needed for this #BuildingABetterT job. A new 80 foot railroad bridge was built off-site and rolled on tracks to the spot. Working over the Assonet River, the old span was demolished and new one set over 11 days.

The process is a modified one from installing new road bridges over small-width creeks and rivers/gullies - the modification is that it is brought in by rail - not road. It's even the same type of bridge - I've seen them used in MDOT/SHA projects in Maryland. Civil engineers do this sort of thing routinely - so do military engineers. It's a slick piece of work - but routine.
