The more expensive oil and gas get, the more it makes sense to finally expand rail service, freight as well as passenger! This means reactivating abandoned track and building new routes!
So much time and effort and money spent in the transfer process that could be saved if the couple of miles from the end of the current in service track was reactivated to the Bakery. When I lived in Fall River, Gold Medal Bakery ran three work shifts seven days a week with hundreds of employees and made bread for all the brand names that you find in the Super Markets. That is a lot of flour and sugar not to mention pallets of loaf wrapping sleeves. Plus all the other baked goods and containers.
Would have to be totally rebuilt to updated standards, when it comes to railroad upgrades and projects, its expensive period and 40 plus years a go just to add a switch and derail to a main artery was 100,000.00 dollars and that didn’t take into account of updated electronics switch protection and PTC …good day.
It is so exciting to see some glimmer of activity for a train line that is 2 blocks from my home! I would love to see the line rehabilitated all the way down to the sewage treatment plant, and we often lament that they need to restore the connection going down to Newport as well! Several years ago, a company called Midland (they had signage up while the work was going on) did a lot of clearing of the ROW from the current end of line in Fall River. We thought they were preparing it for line restoration, but it;'s back to being overgrown again. Bringing this line back makes total economic sense!
This line sure looks like it has potential. It's pretty rare, but always nice to see rail put back into service. I'm on the opposite coast and unfortunately have seen a few rail lines taken out and gone for good. Best of luck to you on this project.
This section of track should definitely be put back in service if there are businesses that would utilize it and make it a profitable and better for the environment. As for the NIMBY's, the tracks were there long before they arrived and as you say, the line is only listed as "out of service" so they bought/built there knowing there was a possibility that someday it could be restored if there were businesses that would use it.
I think it’s a matter of not if but when- rail is making a comeback and restoring this section is a logical continuation of the restoration of the current line
The commonwealth of Massachusetts is one of very few states to recognize the value of inactive rail lines and prevent their loss to other developers. It makes sense from both a transportation and environmental standpoint to fund the maintenance of these rail lines. Very often their rebirth results from new mixed passenger and freight operations.
Wouldn't that be just Amazing Awesome if those Rails came back into service. I sure do hope that they do it's SAD to see abandoned rail not in service...
Mike, have you heard any further news about restoration of this stretch? I know a couple of years ago, the ROW was cleared down through the former Bay St, yard area (next to Lund's condos); I walked throught the former yard myself, noticed more than a few pieces of rail marked with splashes of (at that time) fresh green paint, as if to signify them as being in decent enough shape for re-use. I DO recall a NIMBY "stink" about rail service restoration making the pages of the Herald News, but as you've metioned, don't really think they have a legal leg to stand on; as has been noted, the railroad was there FIRST. I also noticed a large pile of neatly stacked rails right near the end of the recently restored active track which I'm sure you're aware of. (I'm rather amazed that they haven't installed either a bumper or at least wheel stops at the end of the run-around stub). Beyond the MA state line, I think RI is thinking of turning the stretch of grade that led down to the now-demolished Sakonnet River RR swing bridge into a rail trail. By the way, if you have my current phone # (ends in -01), I'd like to get together with you some time (evenings are best time to call me; I'm a former second shift guy, & although now retired, still sleep mornings). I still have the garden railroad (getting ready to put it back into operation shortly), & have what will be a large HO New Haven layout under construction on the 3rd floor of the house. ;) Tom Lapointe
Am glad ta see abandoned rails are being restored n brought back ta operation again n not be ripped up n turned in to walking paths if u look at some of the rail lines some of them are historic it's sad how some ta most of them got ripped up n turned into walking paths n how some of them got developed on they could fix them up n have historic n scenic train rides on them n have passenger train service on them n all the abandoned train stations they're historic too n they can fix them up bring passenger train service back again have public passenger train service too it will bring more jobs has less traffic on the roads save u in gas since they wanna keep jacking up gas prices plus u can relax n enjoy the scenery especially during the fall when all the trees are in full color
South Coast Rail, great video. I hope in your next video, you have good news. I hope Mass Coastal rail, does install tracks near the Gold Medal Factory, and the Sewage treatment plant. The bridge that goes across the road, in the beginning of the video, would look good, with two tracks running across, in operation. That what's makes a great railroad.
It’s not up to Mass Coastal. The rails are owned by the state who needs to fund reconstruction. Mass Coastal has the rights to operate on that line as well as many others in SE Mass. This is a successful operating model for Shortline railroads that should be implemented by other states. The days of railroads owning the right of way are over except for the class 1 railroads and even that may change in the future. We don’t ask trucks to own the highway, or airlines to build airports. Rails are a public benefit infrastructure. It does not make financial sense for a railroad to invest capital and pay taxes on it. Public ownership makes much more sense.
If nothing's happened in the past decade toward restoration of the line, my guess is that nothing will be happening during the next decade, either... no matter how much sense it might make, logistically speaking. For many years I had heard rumors and seen things in the local newspaper that the long unused portion of the former Reading Railroad's (then Conrail's) Bethlehem branch between Bethlehem and Quakertown, PA would be brought back into service to restore passenger (and freight) service between Bethlehem and Philadelphia. Then a number of years ago, while crossing the former right-of-way, I discovered that all rails, ties, and overgrowth had been removed and fine gravel was being applied to the surface. Today it's another in a growing number of rail-trails now existing in this part of PA. Once rail service ends on a line -- especially when it stopped decades earlier and previous online customers have had a lot of time to find other ways to ship/receive their products -- it's very difficult to restore previously abandoned railroad track. Not impossible mind you, but highly unlikely... unfortunately.
Well if it's a rail trail that's better than having it buried under a housing development. At least you can put signs along the way that describe the railway that use to be there.
Only 2.5 miles? I've mowed a trail that long in the Everglades and left most of it between 8 and 10 ft wide. Only took two Saturdays to do it. That should be a simple cleanup job before the real work starts, relaying the track.
There is also an abonedoned railrode which is being destroyed slowly I followed it and its still connected to a useable tracks but the one I followed is completely in rsut and not connected properly
Start by reworking the old Duro print property along the tracks and maybe put in a waste transfer station there just like the Cape does for their trash.
Does anyone know where Gold Medal sells their rail Transloads shipped in .. bakery Goods.... It be funny to see the new Railway shipping flour into the RESTORATION GOLD METALS BAKERY SPUR AND US RAILFANS ARE WATCHING THE RAIL MOVEMENT S WHILE " EATING A DELICIOUS GOLD METAL BAKERY TREATS"

Hey all you tubers let's Start a GOLD METAL BAKERY "Buy their products " campaign...overwhelming business increases.........ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhyes restored rail service. ..(Other business will see this increases productivity and follow suit
Not their place to complain. It's a railroad right of way and they knew about it all along. There are several places along the ROW where people just built right over the tracks (sheds, fences, etc.). Oh well... : )
Looks like you have your work cut out for you God I have not seen a train on that line in years I grew up in the city My father worked for the New York New Haven and Hartfoed Railroad I use to go fishing down at State Ave My my How the over growth has pretty much riined the tracks They may have to replace it all before they can restore it back to normal or even better Do they plan to go clear into Newport again
@@ervinthompson6598 That would be a question that would have to be answered in court. As there still are rails and ties there, it could be claimed to have been railbanked.

Agree, the city just spent twice as much for the Quequechan/Watuppa rail trail that generates NO revenue or alleviate truck traffic so why not throw a few pennies to help out a business that employs hundreds of people.
WoW. Sad by your correct Comments 😢...Trails are nice too....But like you said why not a Railway and a trail...? could they use FRAP GRANTS TO REBUILD THE LINE TO START ROLLING TRAINS....THE CITY WOULD BENEFIT TOO WITH A TRAIL THERE ARE FEDERAL GRANTS THAT PAYS $3100 A MILE TO MAINTENANCE OF TRACK AND TRAILS IF THEY BOTH SHARE 🤔😉

There’s a big tank farm just over the border in Rhode Island, you would think that would be a great potential customer.

I think common sense. And if they can get the funding to restore the line. It would not be too hard to do it.

A waste transfer station in Fall River would be nice. Perhaps have it at Duro or even Weavers Cove.
Whats the timeline for putting rail line back in operation ?
Great video very informative ty
Those shore home owners are going to enjoy the freight shuttle service…
LOL, and the chance to flatten pennies.....
there an update have they started work on reserving the spur?
Lois Griffin at 6:49. And yes these sidings should be maintained if only to preserve rights of way.

You won't sell that idea to the trucking industry, who will call foul play to their interests.
