  • Romanian Christmas and New Year traditions. Romania has a rich tapestry of customs and celebrations during this festive season. One unique tradition is the "Capra" dance, where people dress up as goats or bears and go from house to house, performing a lively dance to bring good luck and drive away evil spirits.

At the time I’m writing this, most people in Romania await “colindători” or carolers, who go from house to house singing carols and in return are given money and sweets. On New Year’s Eve, people will start to dance the goat and bear dance to homes. In my region, not sure about the others but in the morning of January 1st, the so called “semănători” will come who will sing and drop seeds on the door entrance to “plant” good fortune and luck to people for the next year. Every region of Romania has unique traditions! ❤
These traditions are centuries old, but they’re starting to become endangered…they’re thankfully being kept alive in regions like Maramureș and Bucovina where the old ways of life and ancient traditions still remain relevant to this day. Romania is one of the very few European countries that still keep ancient pagan traditions alive like they used to be ages ago, not just for show or things like that, and not only for Christmas but in general, and that’s something we are very proud of. Even if they’re slowly disappearing, it’s amazing we’re still able to enjoy them still! ❤️

These are from the annual parades of the traditions of the Winter Holidays in the city of Bacau. Most are from the area of Bacău county, but there are many from other neighboring counties: Vrancea, Vaslui, Suceava. In general, the area of Moldova. The Bear Dance is typical of the Bacău area with large groups of dancers dressed in bearskins.

Hello Mr. Giant, these are very old superstitions of our ancestors that over time became traditions. And you asked if we sprinkle holy water in the house, yes we do that too, we use a branch of basil that we soak in a bucket of holy water and and we sprinkle some in the room we do this every year on January 6 and every year on November 30 we anoint the doors and windows with garlic to ward off evil spirits you know vampires, strigoi, moroi and all that. We keep these traditions because it represents us, it does part of our cultural identity and they are fun. And yes dance of bear/dance of goat(depend of the zone) it's like a little carnival😊✨I wish you a Merry Christmas Mr. Giant✨

4 thinks marked me during my life: 1. the enchatments for bad spirits when I was ill - necessary performed by an old woman, our neighbor; 2. the exorcising of a possessed woman in a church near Suceava; 3. almsgiving from a person who didnt't die yet, but was very preoccupied by his future life; 4. Malanca from Iorcani, a band of masked men 10-15 named harapi which performed traditional shoutings and dancings - they were looking like amerindians - feather on their head, black faces painted with soot, bells around their bellies, long pieces of coloured tapeson on their bodies, small bells on their feet, a lash in their hand and a club.

Context: A long time ago, gypsies from our country used to capture bear cubs, placing them on hot embers, and singing songs while the cubs struggled to avoid getting burnt. This practice instilled a new instinct in the bears, so that every time they heard the song, they would start jumping and "dancing," even without the embers near their legs. So this isn t actually a "romanian" tradition. Romanians only liked the way gypsys (who were nomads, at the time, not slaves) did this "show", so they added this to their original "goat dance" traditions
This 2 are the oldest, a newer version of the goat dance, with military costumes became a tradition after the world wars, it is highly different from every region, not many regions keep the original traditions, they keep modernizing, adding grinch costumes just because they look good and slightly changing the song.
I highly recommend you to watch the following 3 :
Tanara de la oglinzi (the newer, military dance)
    Ursul de la oglinzi
    Capra de la oglinzi
This 3 are all the 3 main traditions, unchanged from the 19', ursul si capra maybe long before that.

All this stems from the old belief that the souls of ancestors live in wild animals and that it is good to start the new year with ancestors. All old calendars were solar, the new year started on the shortest day of the year, from the first day of the new year the day starts to get longer. The Christian calendar is just conveniently integrated into the old one, at least the orthodox one.

A tradition I'm not proud of, until recently real bears were used,It was a black spot on Romania's history,🐻 they were stolen as children, they were starved, beaten, kept in chains by real human animals, and now a massacre is being committed against bears in Romania
    Sorry for my english

    • @MrGiant

This is sad, but it is good that the tradition have stopped.
