do you know what a reckless mission is? at some point, you have to outweigh the risk and gain of a mission. Col. Sink and above saw that the risk was worth the reward while everybody below Sink knew the reward wasn't worth the risk. Serve in a position with guys directly under you and you would understand perfectly.

You don't typically salute in the field, especially that close to enemy troops. It paints a target.
You only salute wheen your headdress has a capbrass, thus never saluting in the field.

This was towards the end of the war. In the book Winters himself says he didn't want to put any more lives at risk so close to going home.
Winters knew that easy were gonna be pulled off the line soon, so he falsified the report to protect his men.
