I'm 42 years old ... When I was 14 years old I heard Anestesia and literally couldn't believe that one person could make so much noise with one instrument and an amplifier/pedals. A friend of mine showed me the 'Cliff 'Em All' tape and I was hooked. I bought a guitar/amp and I've been playing guitar ever since! One of my favorite things to do is to listen to all of the Metallica songs with Cliff on 'em but bass only on RUclips and just hear how amazing Cliff was with a bass. We didn't deserve him for sure.
Omg the bass fills at 1:15,1:28,1:54, and 2:07 ect. is why cliff will always be Metallica's best bassist. He's the only one who did them on this song live. Not only is he the best metal bass soloist, he's also an incredible bassist when grounded laying down a real bassline.
@@HeathenDance actually you can ,he's using a pentatonic scale for these fills for the most part, so practice practice practice ,but what you can't teach is passion which translates to practice practice practice
Cliff will be forever the greatest Bass player of all time. In my heart and soul. Forever. The passion, the savagery and his ultimate skill was on another stratosphere. God will never make another Clifford Lee Burton.
My dad is in his 50's and he went to school with cliff, him and my dad were good friends, they played in a band together called "Trauma" my dad was on the E.P album but he got to play along side cliff.
I was too young for the Cliff Burton era of Metallica. I started listening when And Justice For All was released. But I absolutely love going back to the early days with Cliff! Truly one of the best and a great time period for Metallica! Greatest band in the world!
I never got to see him, but I was listening during his time with them. My brother and his friends gave him a pipe-hit f some Oregon Greenery during his solo at The Starry Night (Now...Roseland Theatre) in Portland OR on one of their tours. Wish I had been there.
I only got into Metallica Jan’ 2022 when I was 18. tho I absolutely adore listening to cliffs bass solo’s and seeing him headbang and play like someone who has 35+years experience playing a bass under there belt despite cliff sadly not even making it to 25!. I miss him. and I wish badly he was still alive shredding bass in his 60s with James Lars and Kirk. He was a musical genius taken far far too soon.
I remember a younger friend of mine was a young punk some years ago. He played bass in a small local band. We were smokin talking one day and metallica came up. He wasn't a fan but he had only heard the newer stuff. I went on a rant about the incredible cliff burton. He had no idea who i was talking about and didnt even know the first 3 lps existed. I put all three on and then showed him cliff em all. I could see in his eyes his was completely floored. Afterwards he was seriously in daze at what he just heard and saw. he asked if he could borrow my vhs cliff em all tape. I let him. Never got it back lmfao. Maybe a year later my frend grew his hair long not unlike cliff(but not as long)and had been nerding out on all old metal. It made a profound change in him, his playing style, and how he approached writing bass lines.
Cliff was such a special bass player. One of a kind. Forever gone but etched in history. None like him. Been a fan since i was 14. Now im 33, and even more of a fan now than i was ever was. He made the bass so cool.
I bought this record when I was 16 and still have it.. when I put my headphones for the first time I was amazed by this heavy guitar not knowing that was the bass. Amazing talent of Cliff The Master Burton He was, he is and he always the Bass Master. I'm 54 now and still amazed me.
Gene Simmons - “bassists who play with their fingers live have no idea that we can’t hear what they’re playing” Cliff - “Hold my beer… No literally, hold my beer”

I have goosebumps…Cliff was a Great musician and a wonderful human being. Even if probably none of us has known him personally , I’m sure that he’s still alive in our hearts with his music. He has been so great during his short life that many people still missing him after 37 years as an old friend. I’m one of these… and I’m not the only one. Cliff represents a great source of inspiration for me he did his work, indulging his passions with courage and determination, doing things his way staying humble but without being bullied. I admire him and miss him so much. Love you Cliff
No offense to Kirk but Cliffs solos were filled with so much pure emotion and energy they blow Kirks guitar solos from that era out of the water. Cliff similar to SRV had a unique energy to his playing that is a rare. You can really feel Cliffs energy and emotion exploading out of his bass. Such a tradegy the world lost Cliff so early. Imagine all the amazing bass playing we never got to hear from Cliff during Metallica’s peak years. It makes me sad just thinking about the music we lost out on. I love Newsted a lot. But Cliff was truely unique and one of a kind
Even though I'm a guitar player, Cliff was my hero growing up and a major reason why I picked up an instrument and wanted to play metal. I was about 10 when I sat down and listened to kill em all and ride the lightning, I had both albums and it changed my life forever. His memory will always live on and his music immortalized. This was their peak and Cliff will always be the greatest Metallica bassist. This just further proves it. Just listen to all the improvising in the beginning of this song. Even while Kirk is soloing, Cliff is still doing his own thing. And the clean bass fills he does leading into the main riff hasn't been done since.
They are rushing so much in this clip but it still sounds so fucking good. They all stuck together and sound super tight despite doing the song at what must be 1.5+ speed.
Never heard this before . The little nuances cliff added to this song over the years was insane. He really had his shit together right about then his tone his playing was just on point
This is probably Lars’ best performance of this song as well! Like no joke I’m obsessed with Lars as a drummer and have studied his live playing for ages. While he’s still a great writer and composer he’s definitely never been the absolute best live even in their peak eras but for once a recording with 0% fails or noticeable time flops what so ever, great even sped up, and all the fills even if not from the record were still great. I’m sure the boys were proud of him with this show! Also this is the best I think I’ve heard lars play a basic triplet fill! Usually he falls off time whenever playing those bonham type fills but damn we got a regular dave grohl over here
