it is quite difficult to know which you are allowed to wear unless you know your family history. Some here are clear enough,but these are the main clans.There are a lot of other septs from intermarriage at some point which can technically have their own tartan, but ancestors can sort of wear both. (you are supposed to follow the patriarchal line in weddings,funerals and civil matters) you cannot wear the brooch unless you are a direct descendent of the clan chief.

I've wondered about this too. Of course here in US we just call it plaid but I understand there is a historical significance.
