    At around 7:00 I describe how the latch works
    At around 8:00 I give you a decent tour of how to adjust the door latch (which didnt help me!)
    10:20 I'll show you around how the exterior latch is actually mounted in the door (with gator-clips from hell)
    Around 14:00 I'll show you around the Crown Automotive replacement latches I bought.
    Window removal begins around 16:50
    Door latch install at 21:00
    Rant-y door-lock isues at 23:40
    door re-assembly from around 26:00 on!

    Had the same problem on my TJ but it was the passenger side. Rarely had passengers with me and when I did, it was just easier to reach across and open the door for them. If anybody ever asked why they couldn't open the door from the outside of the Jeep, I just told them it was a Jeep thing and they wouldn't understand. Thanks for walking us through the process. Glad I'm not the only one who knows Murphy 😁

    They make a tool to push the window crank clip back half way to get the handle off. Then when you put it back on you push the clip all the way back in then put the handle on the shaft and whack it with your hand. Easiest way and simple.

    Save yourself a lot of grief and time...use a 1" holesaw and drill two holes, centered and on each side of the latch. It makes this job so much better.

    Thanks for posting this, question.. at 9:14 in the vid in ref to the door handle rod with the ajustment clip , how do you open that clip to move the threaded rod up or down ? Thanks for the advice.
    I figured it out !! Easy : to release the rod from the clip ,spray clip with little wd40, insert a flat head screwdriver in the bottom of the clip , slightly rotate counter clockwise to open the clip while pushing the rod away from you toward the door exerior. ajust up or down (up in my case) and pop the rod back in the clip. Thanks for the great post and hope this helps someone else too

    Bro, I had the EXACT SAME SHIT happen to me!
    First I had the damn alligator clips push through the first time.
    Then I installed my damn handle and installed the door after putting the door card back on and everything, and found the door was locked.
    Damn thing wouldn't unlock!
    Turn the key and maintain pressure, then press the lock, and it unlocked!
    Just wait until the thing that holds the vertical rod that attaches to the latch so the door handle can actuate it starts deciding it doesn't want to hold onto the rod anymore. You're in for a whole new world of shit.

    I didn't have to take the window out but I got lucky. Was able to get those gator teeth door clips into position using a hemostat instrument. One from the bottom and one from the top (with the window rolled up). Then with my hand already inside the door able to push them down into their final position. I don't know if I'd be able to do it again. And I don't know how they do it originally at the factory.

    • @SWBCrawler
      @SWBCrawler  3 года назад

      Right? I'm guessing they have some special tool or a robot to do it.

  • @mlhailey

    On my 98 TJ I bought my passenger side exterior door handle from Rockauto made by Dorman part # 79399. I was able to put my door handle in without removing the window using a long needle nose locking hemostat pliers I got at Harbor Freight. I was lucky! If I have to do it again I will take the window out. With the door still open I accidentally tripped the mechanism that keeps the door shut. Now I cannot shut the door and I cannot push the mechanism back to where it was. I tried keeping the key turned to open pushing the inside unlock at the same time and that did not work!

    • @SWBCrawler
      @SWBCrawler  Год назад

      Are you saying you triggered the latch, or the lock? From what I recall I was able to test the latching mechanism while the door was off the jeep by pressing a screwdriver into where the latch-hook usually goes. Then release it by pulling on the bar that the door handle attaches to.
      Its a simple mechanism, but the whole thing is difficult to make sense of. Once you figure out what each lever does it starts to make a little sense.
      Good luck. This project sucked, no candy coating that.

    Thanks so much for this video! Of all the ones I viewed for this issue, yours was the most helpful - especially your recommendation that I take out the glass. However, Murphy also visited my garage and my door is now locked shut...I tried your suggestion of holding the key in the unlock position and pulling the door handle - no luck (uh oh..) Any other ideas on how to get my stuck locked shut passenger side door open?

    • @SWBCrawler
      @SWBCrawler  3 года назад

      I'm not sure what other methods might work. I think I got very lucky with mine. Do you have the door panel all back together? Iirc you may be able to pull the rod that goes to the latch manually to open it .

    • @johnreblando
      @johnreblando 3 года назад

      @@SWBCrawler thanks for the quick reply! Yes, unfortunately, I put the door panel back together. Everything was ok until I needed to lock my Jeep (I rarely lock it). Once I locked it, I was screwed. I saw another video where one of the commenters said he was able to remove the door panel with the door shut - not sure how to do that...

    • @SWBCrawler
      @SWBCrawler  3 года назад

      @@johnreblando yea. I'd imagine it's possible but man that'll be annoying. ;) Most of the door panel is just clipped on iirc. But the seat and possibly the dash will be in the way. That's going to be a pain. You might be able to get someone with a slim jim to open it.. that's out of my area is expertise tough.

    • @johnreblando

      @@SWBCrawler ok I managed to get the door panel off, but still can't get the lock to disengage. I know there's probably something jammed in there, but I can get to it. If I can just get the door open I can take the lock mechanism out...
