Cole pitched so well.
loved his fight to pitch the last batter in the 9th.
The man is passionate and a competitor to his core.
At the end of the 8th, he looked so disappointed despite 10 Ks and 8 shutout innings.

Nolan Ryan did have the most career walks. He averaged close to 5 a game. While he was a great pitcher, he was wild at times.

He's throwing his slider different. It looks more like he's throwing it as a sweeping slider, but I remember it had more drop and was faster earlier in the season.
That's not bad though. If it pans out, it means he's adapted to the foreign substance ban by pitching smarter. That's the kind of thing that makes a career last longer. He'd be better off

I'm surprised the Yankees shut out the Astros twice in a row, with the offense that they have. Hopefully they can carry this momentum going forward and pitch like this against Boston. They really need to improve with runners in scoring position and give Gerrit Cole some run support in his starts. But overall, great start from Gerrit Cole and great series win.

Crazy that Gerrit Cole almost didn't pitch today cuz he was feeling sick. Obviously we don't know for sure, but if he was indeed using spider tack before, he probably just needed some time to get used to pitching without it. Once again, he gave the Yankees just what they needed on a day where they could only score 1 run. I love how he was cursing at Aaron Boone to keep him in the game til the end lol

July 2, 1963: Giants beat Braves 1-0. 16 inning game. BOTH starting pitchers pitched a COMPLETE game. Giants Juan Marichal threw 227 pitches! Braves Warren Spahn threw 201 pitches! Neither suffered any injury. Marichal had one of his best seasons that year. But back then, starting pitchers FINISHED their games! 100+ pitches were considered rather normal.
I don’t blame Cole for wanting to stay in, and I think Boone did the right thing by leaving Cole in (given Cole’s mound tirade), but today’s starting pitchers are not used to throwing that many pitches. 129!
I hope Cole doesn’t suffer down the road from this extreme effort.
Keep in mind, there were only 20 teams in 1963. That means the pool of pitchers was ~62% of what it is today, and 100-mph throwers were an especially rare breed. Pitchers have less stamina today because they're all expected to throw like Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax. But not everyone is a prime athlete like these men. Most aren't even the athlete Gerrit Cole is. Maybe there would be more 120-pitch starts if so many starters didn't bust their arm throwing 98-mph fastballs, 100-mph sinkers, and 90-mph splitters.
@@davewolf6256 Agree, Dave. What worries me about Cole is that he is a flame thrower. Last pitch of the game: 99 mph. By the way, Koufax, Bob Veale, Jim Maloney, Ryan, Bob Gibson, Don Drysdale, and others all threw in the mid 90’s+. But yes, EVERYBODY now wants to throw 100+. So their pitch counts are pretty low to protect them. 129 was the highest count in a number of years in all of MLB. Also, Cole was feeling horrible a day or so before the game, and was on IV fluids. So that 129 was amazing, but to me, worrisome. Yankees desperately need him. Their offense this year is nothing to brag about.
