    Noggins aren't expensive. Just chuck a few in 1 or 2 per gap. Also you mentioned the floor being bouncy, maybe opt for a flooring that's a few mil thicker. I think the difference between a safe 45cm span and a 60cm span is only like 3mm of floorboard thickness, so thicker the better. (Don't take my word for it off hand I'm on a lot of painkillers)
    And my tip for sound proofing - if you have the space, a staggered stud wall, hang mlv in the middle, insulate it with rockwool. Seal /all/ gaps with a flexible sealant (including around backboxes) and thick drywall, maybe even 2 layers with the mlv inbetween. Noise mainly travels surface to surface as vibrational energy and if you have a double stud wall that is staggered so minimal contact points almost no sound will travel and the heavy mlv will absorb a lot more. You also have to think "if someone sprayed water at this surface, where would it get in?" Like go in to any room in your house, listen to the noise level, now crack a window 1mm. Hear the difference? Mass is the main thing to soundproof but having air space inbetween 2 studs basically lets the sound energy burn itself out to a degree.
    That foam stuff you stick everywhere is good for improving acoustic /quality/ and reducing echo but does nothing for actual sound dampening.

    It's always interesting to me how often electrical standards seem to change over there... The electrical panel that my parents had out into their house in 1982 is almost identical to panels that are put in today (in Canada)... The biggest difference is the circuit breakers themselves... More likely to be GFCIs or AFCIs (RCDs and AFDDs), but other than that residential hasn't changed much here in 40+ years.

    Good job so far Nick. Personally, I'd put 2 offset noggins between each joist, though as has been pointed out, they are mainly to stop twisting but in you case would add strength to whole arrangement. I would have used M10 drop in anchors for the frame feet and tech screws for the metal frame to joist, as opposed to grip adhesive. If you're able to squeeze Milwaukee, i would ask them for a first fix nailer to secure the flooring to the joists s well. Their cable stapler will also be useful when it comes to first fix of your cabling on the joists. I look forward to part deux 😊

  • @IAAITKEN
    @IAAITKEN Месяц назад +3

    You can get chemical anchor tubes. Basically drill a hole, stick in a tube and then when you put in the bolt or threaded rod it breaks the tube and sticks it in place. Stuff like Rawlplug R-CAS-V.

  • @bluechang08

    Adding noggins to connect the joists will remove the bounce in the floor and make it stronger as you are tying the joists together (I'm only a DIy'er., not a Joiner nor builder, but built a platform foir a heavy garden shed in the back garden in the same way) - Use the same size timber as the joists for the noggins as its the easiest way of doing it. I would also find a way of connecting the joist ends to the metal legs to be absolutely certain the whoel thing won't move as well - even if it is some metal L brackets to screww into the side of the joist and then a self tapper into the metal support structure.
    What is the length of those joists as well the other dimensions? (are the joists 2x8 or 2x10?) - The reason I ask is if you are planning on putting a large amount of weight up there once you've rebuilt the mezzanine in your unit, you want to be certain the joists are rated for the span - have a look for a joist calculator online to ensure what you have is sufficient for the gap and can take whatever weight you intend on putting up there. Judging by what's on the mezzanine walls, it looks like it was designed for a small office space and the previosu tenant then used the underneath for storage so may not be rated for a large amount of weight to save on cash. I would rather overbuild something than underbuild it and have it fail on me, causing damage and a lot of mess that I then have to tidy up.
    You can check up on the joists spans using the NHBC Span Tables - these are for domestic builds, but you could make use of them for your mezzanine to confirm its suitability for your needs - see nhbc-standards.co.uk/2020/6-superstructure-excluding-roofs/6-4-timber-and-concrete-upper-floors/6-4-8-timber-joist-spans/

    I'd stick a few noggins or herringbone struts in across the centre at least . Just helps with any deflection and stops the bounce. Def need some anchor bolts and not wood screws 😂. Should be able to support a few reels of Flexicon then. And either rebuild the stairs or Def loose that closed side on the stairs. Scaffold tube sprayed black ? It was good enough for the batcave

  • @chaseohara4781
    @chaseohara4781 Месяц назад +6

    Cross bracing, or 'noggins'😂, is there to prevent the joists from twisting. Since those joists are so old, they've Probably about twisted themselves out.
    Should you put cross bracing in? Sure. But it's honestly pretty optional in that situation. I doubt you'll have a high end floor on top that you want to prevent nail pops on.
    If you do, with a span like that you'll only really need to add bracing in the very middle.

    • @Skellist
      @Skellist Месяц назад

      Noggins are also helpful to tie the joists together to spread the load more evenly to prevent the floor from feeling bouncy. It's very common for older UK houses to have "bouncy" floors because they never used noggins between the floor joists. Not to mention deflection is still possible... it's definitely worth just addressing now
