  • What happens when your mind gets infected by photos you've seen online? What happens when you get fixated on trying to find the exact spot where those photos were taken? That's exactly what happened to me in this episode of the vlog.
Dusy Basin is one of the classic Sierra locations that every hiker should see at least once in their life. In late August 2020 I finally made my first trip to this spectacular rocky amphitheater. Conditions were wildly varying over the four days I spent in the area, ranging from heavy thunderstorms, to crystaline blue skies, the howling winds, to heavy smoke. This made the photography fun and varied. My goal for the first day of trekking was to get into the heart of Dusy Basin itself to photograph the lakes there. One problem: I had seen so many photos of Dusy Basin online that I had broken my #1 rule of photography: get rid of your expectations! I felt mentally stuck, wanting only to recreate some of the same photos I'd seen online. Can I break out of this bad habit and find my own shots?? Watch the video to find out.

Nice, and inspiring, to see you enjoying time in the field so much Josh, living your "Have fun and happy shooting" tag line. Great shots, start to finish, but especially the last one at 10:34. Thanks as always.

What a gorgeous place!! I'll have to visit there sometime. The textures in those rocks were fantastic. That meandering stream in the foreground at 2:07 was perfect. Love that advice about the foreground.

Josh, great photos of a fantastic place. I'd love to see the lens and exposure details for your featured photos. Are you using your Nikon mirrorless mostly? With the 14-24mm lens or something else? Thanks!

thanks heaps josh for providing such good content to us.very much appreciated
in this video you pointed out an trap which many especially younger photographers fall into...getting THE shot at a certain location without looking to add a own personal touch to it.many spots here in switzerland get photographed over and over again from the same viewing point without even considering changing it since this or that famous guy got a gazillion likes since internet fame became a thing...hope this changes over the course of the next few years tho but thanks for making me feel less stupid staying away from this trap
    cheers from switzerland

Cheers, Michael. It's such an easy trap to fall into. And so satisfying when you find your own path, eh?

Great video. Your images are excellent. Where did you focus to get complete front to back focus on the rock in the foreground and the mountain and reflection in the background? I wish I could do this better. I have trouble getting everything in focus front to back. It's frustrating.

Thanks very much! Yes, this is one of the most common problems in landscape photography. Typically I focus about 1/3 up from the bottom of the frame, but that varies depending on how close I am to the f/g. I usually try to shoot around f/8 or f/11 but may stop down to f/16 or even focus stack if I am really close to the f/g. One other thing that's very helpful is using live view to ensure everything is sharp.
