Great presentation Tom. Minor correction: Not the first Saturday Night's Main Event. Feb. 5th, 1988, "The Main Event" was a single episode spin-off of Saturday Night's Main Event. There have been 5 in total, this was the first. Actually broadcast on a Friday, hence no "Saturday" in the title, set a new benchmark for largest wrestling television audience all-time.
FYI: sports team getting titles started with the 2004 detroit pistions. when they won the nba championsip, rasheed wallace paid for everyone on the team to get personalized wwe big gold belts aka the wcw world title with individualized name plates.
Cody was very evidently wearing the latest Winged Eagle replica from WWE Shop. So if you own one like Tom (and I), then you now own an official 100% screen-accurate WWE title belt. 😁
My favorite championship design of all time! The winged eagle is the championship of my childhood, keep your spinner championships. This is what a real championship looks like. This is perfection right here.
Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase (unofficially), Macho Man Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior, Sgt. Slaughter, The Undertaker, "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, Bret "Hit Man" Hart, Yokozuna, Bob Backlund, "Big Daddy Cool" Diesel, "Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels, Sycho Sid, and Stone Cold Steve Austin. All those with the honor of holding the Winged Eagle Championship. Who knows how awesome it would have been if "Big Eagle" champions like Kane, The Rock, Mankind, Triple H, Big Show, Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho had worn that title.
That Photoshoot wasnt in 2011......Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose wasn't even on the roster in 2011.......... but this was an awesome video tho so kudos.
Well done, Tom. That was the belt I saw on an episode of "Maple Leaf Wrestling" in the fall of '88, when one of the three channels we could get in my patch of rural Canada finally started airing WWF, with Macho Man wearing it as he was interviewed on that little stage by Mean Gene in front of a big crowd, the belt gleaming under the stage lights. Iconic from that day forward for me.
Tom, this was amazing, When I saw the belt on Saturday, I was immediately transported back to my childhood. It has always been one of my favorite belts. Haven't like all who have held it but still, it was beautiful to look at. Thank you for the history lesson on it.
The irony of the whole "WWE want a branded belt" is that the 'Winged/Big Eagle' is so synonymous with the WWF/E that it already *_IS_* their brand. Hell, you could even easily do a compromise and keep the usual overbearing WWE brand/logo but just include some wings coming off the sides so you keep "the brand" visibly present but also include their "other brand" and it'd be a win-win for them. Basically like their current World Heavyweight Championship design only with the 'Winged Eagle' around it. Simples.
I love videos like this. Hats off to Cultaholic for the number of these deep dives they've done, the quality literally never drops. I had no idea Reggie Parks was a performer and strongman before this video
I didn’t become a wrestling fan until the Attitude Era so I have more nostalgia for the Big Eagle than the Winged Eagle, but the Winged Eagle is the best looking belt of all time
I guess nostalgia can change your feelings about something, because I remember back when Hogan debuted this thing, I hated it. I loved the previous belt, probably because when I started watching wrestling, that was the belt Hogan wore at WM3. But seeing it last Saturday night made me really appreciate just how gorgeous that title was compared to what we have now in 2024.
I loved the throwback episode of Saturday Nights Main Event. It was great hearing Jesse's voice. The belt was the cherry on top. Its much better than the W belt.
The Winged Eagle title is the most attractive title belt ever crafted. The big gold WCW belt comes in 2nd, but the Winged Eagle is #1! Also, I got your Godfather reference at 6:03. I want you to feel acknowledged for that. 😄
My favourite belt is the one held by Eddie, Brock, and JBL. I think it was called the undisputed belt or something like that. I don’t get why nobody talks about that belt. It’s gorgeous.
This belt is the GOAT love it reminds me of the all my favorite WWF guys Hulkster, Savage, Warrior, Michaels, Austin, Hart, Flair, Slaughter, Yoko, Andre evan Dibiase.
Along with the Big Gold title belt The Winged Eagle is the most beautiful and iconic world title in the buisness. I hope wwe realise that it should come back for a prolonged run. Fans adore that title for a reason and I'm not a big fan of Cody Rhodes but it did look good on him.
This still doesn't give Reggie the credit he deserves. Acid etching for championship belts wasn't a thing, but Reggie went to an industrial machinist realizing making the plate one solid piece instead of the old trophy shop medals riveted and glued together. He also pioneered tooled leather straps for belts. Basically, everything we attribute to classic styling in championship belts all come from Reggie, and basically all come from the late 70s/ early 80s.
@@Nitemerican when you think of the Monday night wars and Chris Jericho unifying the WCW and WWF titles back then that's the one that hold the same prestige as Big Gold to me.
@@Nitemerican when you think of the Monday night wars and Jericho unifying the WCW and WWF titles the big eagle is always going to be the one to hold the same prestige as Big Gold
@@TheNightmareMan Couldn’t agree more. Title was held by Jericho,Rock,Taker,Austin,Mankind,HHH among many other staples of wwe history. It’s the title from the greatest era. Everyone always wants “the attitude era” back. Haven’t heard one person say “give me the golden years back” 😅
Been watching wrestling for to be 43 years when I turn 47 in May, so boy oh boy have I obviously seen MANY belts, but more specifically, maybe you also kinda make a point to notice how good certain belts look on certain wrestlers. Of course Hogan is synonymous with this Winged Eagle belt, but man, if Macho Man didn't look great and better than Hogan with that belt on... As far as a promotion's 3 "main" titles go--- World Heavyweight Championship Belt, World Tag Team Championship Belts, and "midcard" i.e. Intercontinental Championship Belt--- I don't think you can find a better group of 3, from any promotion, at any era, than that WWF GOLDEN ERA, described by the wrestler(s) held em the longest back then: The Winged Eagle/Hulk Hogan obviously... The Tag Team "Demolition" Belts... The IC "steps" belt for Honky Tonk Man My all time fav belt is the big gold, BENT TOP NOTCH, WCW Belt, synonymous with Ric Flair....my fav WWF/E WORLD belt is that Steve Austin Big Eagle/wwf attitude "scratch" logo belt that Stone Cold had after they retired Winged Eagle.... I also REALLY love the AEW World Heavy belt, and maybe I'm in a minority here, but that ECW World Heavy belt that was around for I wanna say 3, 4 years or so maybe, before they (sadly 😢😢😢) closed their doors... belt design/comparison is one of the most fun, and very underrated talking points, and subsequently, ARGUMENTS lol, between us wrestling fans... Of course my fav IC belt, and MANY others', which actually is arguably my 1A to big gold for all time fav, is that Honky IC steps belt... And my fav Tag team belts are those Demolition/WWF Golden Era Tag belts. I know MANY other wrestling fans who feel the same way about those 2 IC/Tag belts, so when u factor in how beloved and awesome the Winged Eagle belt is, I mean come on...!!! I challenge anyone to show me 3 belts that appeared at the same time/era, for any promotion, as friggin awesomely cool as a triad, as those 3 WWF Golden Era belts!
*adjusts spectacles ACKCHUALLY that lovely photo shoot with the classic titles was more from 2016 or so. Because most of the wrestlers featured in it were not on the WWE TV in 2011. Unless Tom has access to another universe where that happened. What is that universe like? I bet it's the universe where Eddie Kingston actually got Maffew once and for all 😱 But overall a fun video from our Tom. Looking like he might need to take a run at Young Andrew's belt himself 👀
Cody title might get vacated dew to the piledriver from Kevin Owens after SNME. A WWE Championship Tournament for WrestleMania 41 would make things extremely interesting for WrestleMania 41 I hope they have a WWE Championship Tournament like they did way back when in 1988 at WrestleMania 4 🤔.
I like the idea of a Championship Tourney setup where for a couple of weeks leading up to the PLE, will be done in many ways like how the Women's United States and Intercontinental Championships were competed for. King and Queen of the Ring was done in a tournament fashion too.
The greatest Pro Wrestling title belt ever. With KO having stolen it after his match with Cody, hopefully this means that the Winged Eagle title belt will not be a 1 night only moment. Hopefully its back for good.
Hands down my favourite belt ever! It has a level of prestige only rivalled by NWAs big gold and the great IWGP heavyweight belt but for me the winged eagle is easily the most beautiful. It looked good on everyone who held it (legitimately or otherwise) but it's the belt Bret Hart, so therefore it's the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be!
the shot of the belt in saturday night’s main event was too polished to tell but it looked like a replica. maybe that was why it was shined up… because the logo didn’t look like wwf at the top, more like ww just like the turnbuckle logos. making it more reflective his the details like if it said wwf (for legal reasons to not draw attention tomit) or ww (indicating it was not the original classic wwf one).
You could have gone into detail about why it's such a good belt design, so permit me to gush To start with, it has no personal nostalgia for me, so there are no rose-tinted glasses here. But the central medallion is just the right kind of ostentatious without being tacky. Compare to the spinner on one hand and the undisputed belt on the other. One is a big box crusted with diamonds like barnacles on a ship's hull; the other is small and square - a good design for a midcard belt, but not a world championship. The shape of the central medallion really draws the eye, with the wings reaching outside making the shape more interesting. The eagle, as you said, is a bold symbol, and it literally has the world on its shoulders. One thing I will say is better for the big eagle is the size of the globe, and I'm also a fan of the bird sitting on top of it, but with everything contained inside a circle makes for a less interesting figure. Sticking with interesting shapes, the side medallions are shaped like wheatsheaves, whereas every other belt I can think of has square sides. Boring. Although I do like the current trend of screwing in personalised plates for reigning champions. There's the font. Art deco, with a ribbon along the bottom A concluding point: it suits *e v e r y b o d y* who wore it. You know how difficult it is to come up with a design that works as well on the Undertaker as Shawn Michaels? And furthermore, it would suit anyone you could imagine putting it on
13:35 fun fact, the only mens American sports league that WWE has never given a custom championship to their league champion despite acknowledging their existence is Major League Soccer.
0:30 nah, you misspoke there Tom. Is Canada one of the most underrated hot beds of wrestling history? Feels like it's lost in the shuffle of the US, Japan, and the UK. Looked over perhaps because it's doesn't have a real national promotion in the last who knows how many years
I honestly didn't care about the Winged Eagle Championship. It's a good looking belt, no doubt. But not a fan of it. Weird but I like the new Undisputed WWE Championship alot more.
You can hear in Tom's voice how much he respects and loves that historic belt.
The Shawn Michaels era wearing it always looked extra shinier gold to me
Great presentation Tom.

My favourite WWE Title belt, a shame it'll never be returning full time!
Winged Eagle (all eagles have wings, name always seemed weird to me) was always my favourite, but this video makes me love it even more.
Think it's because the wings protrude out the edges of the medallion
I'm a long time wrestling fan from Edmonton, and I never knew the GOAT Belt had some history here!
Tom, this was amazing, When I saw the belt on Saturday, I was immediately transported back to my childhood. It has always been one of my favorite belts. Haven't like all who have held it but still, it was beautiful to look at. Thank you for the history lesson on it.
Also, the belt was not made by an engraving machine. It was acid etched zinc. Plated in layers of copper, nickel, and finally gold.
The irony of the whole "WWE want a branded belt" is that the 'Winged/Big Eagle' is so synonymous with the WWF/E that it already *_IS_* their brand.

Very interesting. I always thought Warrior's belts were the same metal parts put on a different piece of leather.
I thought the same! 😄
I think it not a coincidence that the first belt made by this Canadian resembled the Molson beer logos of the time.
Fantastic video Tom! I own that same replica and it's the WWF version!
Winged Eagles are good unlike those with no wings
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

From childhood, the winged eagle is basically Hogan's belt. Kinda like the big gold is pretty much Flair's belt.
Same way Big eagle is Austin’s.
Best belt hands down

Keep the eagle! Even the big eagle. Such a great design.

The truth is that eagles are generally winged.
I think it may look better with a bigger design. The eagle belt look small compared to the current world title.
The big eagle belt is my favorite
That’s a belt, not a title.
The “title” is the name “champion”. The belt is the physical representation of the title held. They say it wrong on tv intentionally.
That’s a belt, not a title.
And you hit on the main reason that the Winged Eagle will never return. Every other indie promotion had a Winged Eagle by 1994.
It's a good title; not my favorite design. That goes to the "Undisputed WWE Championship/WWE Championship design that was held by Eddie Guerrero. But, you can't deny that looked so much better on Cody than the current championship.
That too was won by many wrestlers like Brock Lesnar and JBL, to name a few more notable title holders of that time.

Long term storytelling by Owens 😂😂
Wouldn't the name Flying Eagle make more sense than Winged Eagle because all Eagles have wings
The winged part was that the eagle's wings were spread out for emphasis.
Looks great with Kevin Owens

That's not 2011 with K.O.,RR,and Mox holding the Winged Eagle Belt 🦅 , it looks more like 2015 or 16 🤷♂️‼️‼️‼️
Undisputed Title Still the BEST (Lesnar version)
I do wonder why its called the Winged Eagle belt... like, is there any eagle in the world without wings? 😂😂😂
The belt he’s holding onto says WWF. How are they still allowed to sell merch that says “WWF”?
This guy didn’t mentioned the greatest Winged eagle champion Bret Hart!?!
I honestly didn't care about the Winged Eagle Championship. It's a good looking belt, no doubt. But not a fan of it. Weird but I like the new Undisputed WWE Championship alot more.
I like the big eagle more 🤷♂️
10:20 rusev in 2011?
That was 2015-2016 not 2011
Sorry but no sorry... but I have more love for the spinner belt than the eagle belt...
(But Big Gold is on the #1!)
SNME had only 50 mins of wrestling
Collision has 67 mins of wrestling.
Only the Dub has real graps
imo they should make a modern version of it instead of bringing it back
