More than 10 years ago I saw him climb a 6b at Kalymnos. He didn’t make much fuzz about it before he started, but somehow people realized that this senior was trying a route that was hard for many of the other climbers there. This wasn’t at a hot shot crag 😀 I could see that more and more people followed his progress. He climbed carefully but steadily. For the final half a minute before the crux, the whole crag had stopped up and just cheered him. When he landed the crux move, everyone lost it, in a way I have never seen at crag. A real inspiration to continue climbing as long as possible.
J ai grimpé en salle à côté de lui il y a deux mois, dans du 5b en tête à 97 ans, j en avais les larmes aux yeux. Tellement inspirant !
As a 24 year old I have this silly underlining fear that all progress in physical activity stops once you get to a certain age. Films like this keep me ambitious of the future, Marcel you’re an inspiration! Way to show us all that the spirit never dies no matter what happens to the body
@MUTINYBEAST. When I was your age, I had a similar feeling...that, if I didn't have great adventures by my early 30's, all would be lost, since my technical abilities in climbing and skiing would "inevitably" decline. Now, at more than twice your age, I am skiing better than I did in my 20's and 30's, and still having fun climbing adventures, as well as making time for other interests I would never have thought of when I was in my 20's!
John S Glad to hear we share that feeling! Oh man thanks for letting me know.. keeps me stoked for the future when hearing stories like that. Good luck with all your adventures for years to come John! Hopefully I can pass the flame to the next young person!
@MUTINYBEAST Glad I could help! Sometimes we all need assistance keeping the future in perspective! I bet if we could get together for an adventure we'd have a lot to talk about! Enjoy each day for what it is...we're in this for the long run!
This guy is awesome. Good start of the video where he explains he doesn't understand most old people. I Started 1.5 years ago when I was 34. Now solid on 6a, moving towards 6b, couple of injuries like the A2 pulley partly torn. Lesson: take it slow and no pushing too hard. Make it fun, no pressure and indeed, I see myself doing this still when I'm 70. Awesome vid.
Or, he could just be old... (I'm nearly 60 myself - I'm not having a dig at Monsieur Remy (he's heroic), just pointing out that caution and deliberation are a natural by-product of getting older). But that said, you're a pretentious _dick_ if you think this demonstrates dedication "to the art and not the ego of climbing." - you _could not_ have missed the point more.
I'm pushing 40. Little voice in my head keeps nagging me saying that I'm past my physical peak and should just quit while I'm ahead...before I embarrass myself or become too discouraged by my decline in ability. After seeing this, though, for crying out loud..this man is incredible...and I have NO excuse not to keep going. It's not about looking or being the best. It's about fully embracing this one and only life that you have. Stay in motion. However you can.
Just don't bother comparing yourself with other people. Create your own goals and terms for accomplishment based on who you want to become. I'm 60 and in 2019, I backcountry skied every week until July 4th including two 3 day tours a 4 day tour skiing peaks nearly 14,000'. Then I mountaineered or ice climbed every week through October. My biggest day hike was 25.5 miles and 8,300' vertical including a 13,000'+ peak. My son and I climbed V-Notch to Polemonium Peak in the Palisades in October. Now that my kids are out of the house, I plan on having a very long and rewarding relationship with the mountains.
I'm 53, last year I broke my knee during a simple hike and today it feels like the Everest walking up one floor up. Chapeau bas Monsieur. By the way if he's 94 his son who's climbing with him must be above 70 years old ?! I remember when I was a teenager going on summer or winter vacation in this swiss village there was this 80 years old man still hiking and skiing.
As a climber, I find this mental strenght trully amazing. And even more when we know that during the 1970´s he was delaying his sons doing aid climbing with moutain shoes in Jura (France). Congratulations to this great man (I wish I would be like him when reaching 94 !). A video of his sons in 1977 with him belaying: www.rts.ch/archives/tv/culture/chronique-montagne/8199490-les-freres-remy-.html
this kind of people is the one that u have to learn about them such a mentality that he has, respect i hope to be able at that age doing stuff like him
Not only does he finish climbing that last huge wall, something most gym rats would have a hard time doing, he parasails off the summit with one of his climbing partners. I just kept shaking my head in disbelief. What an incredible person.

Formidable! At 64 this is inspiring. I'd better stop worrying about being the old geezer at the climbing gym and go sign up.... as soon as the quarantine is lifted. (Maybe I'll spend some of my Trump money purchasing a membership in advance.)

Vertikal1000 thanks for sharing. Marcel is so inspiring. We live in the same area and I have been told he is still climbing indoor regularly

If you started climbing at age 30, remember you still have at least 64 years ahead of you if you want it. Brilliant
that's me basically...i started at 29... 7a soon!
69)) He celebrated 99ys on the rockodrome not far ago. Made 4c
The way how he pulls at 11:18 is amazing! I'd never expected him being born in 1923! My deepest respect!

RIP & climb in heaven Mr. Remy! Such an inspiration!!
Wanderfull!!! I am 88 and i go skiing and trekking too
look at the style: deliberate, cautious confirmation of toe/foot and hand holds. Dedicated to the art and not the ego of climbing. Applause!!
Or, he could just be old...

22 year old guy: "I'm too tired to go climb today"
94 year old old man: "I'm off to go climb 5c wanna come?"

I take my hat off to you sir, you are an inspiration to old codgers like myself to keep doing what we enjoy. Age should not limit our ambition.

anyone knows what's the song @10:33 ?
Formidable! At 64 this is inspiring. I'd better stop worrying about being the old geezer at the climbing gym and go sign up.... as soon as the quarantine is lifted. (Maybe I'll spend some of my Trump money purchasing a membership in advance.)
Holy smokes!!
Anyone knows how the intro song is called?
He should be national director of universal assistant living facilities.
97 ans aujourd'hui au 28 avril 20. He enjoys climbing. That's why
what's the diet? must know!
It's harder but possible !
