    Great reaction.
If this song doesn't make anyone feel some kind of feeling then you're dead inside.

Its the Romeo + Juliet theme song, that pretty much says it all about the lyrics.

//just keeps going - I was so stunned when I first heard this album I really couldn't make sense of it - like did really just hear the greatest album in my life? Were these guys officially moving past Pink Floyd and Stevie Ray as my favorite band ever? The answer was and still is yes. "In Rainbows" comes out ten years later and has the same impact...they are not for everyone because you have said it so right a bunch of times, they're music takes time to sink in, but once it does, it is one of a kind.

It is such a dark and actually mean-spirited song. It's about punishing her father by convincing her to go along with a suicide pact. It's a pretty crazy song.

It wasn’t a popular song in the 90’s. It was hidden gem. The truth is that the quality of the music back then was so high and there were so many good bands that it was overwhelming and impossible to track everything.

It's funny back in 97 there was a real split over this album - the Uni kids loved it and the working class kids tended not too. If you were working class Radiohead tended to be seen as a bit pretentious and if you were working class you liked things like the grungey rock of the Foo fighters "The Colour and the Shape", the beatlesque Oasis "Whats the Story (Morning Glory), No Doubts Ska influenced "Tragic Kingdom", the edgy dance of The Prodigy "Fat of The Land", the tech of Daft Punk "Homewerk" or where I was the funny indie stylings of Regurgitator "Unit". I can see that OK computer is a good album now but back than man we hated it so very much. It's still not as good as the other albums for mine but it's definitely a decent album.

I'm a working class brit from the cold dark north. Back then my top bands were Radiohead, Blur, Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins. When I started uni in the early 2000s I met a whole cavalcade of people with similar tastes

Why the hell would class have anything to do with taste in music? There was certainly no split as far as i could tell, i'm from one of the most working class areas in the UK and everyone i know loved this album as much as the others you have mentioned*, Pink Floyd have similar backgrounds and cerebral music just like Radiohead and were never considered too lofty for 'working class' people.
*Nobody in the UK liked No Doubt.....ever, or would dare admit to it :) and funnily enough their albums are never considered classic.... by anyone.

@@rohnnyjotten3985 - Perhaps in the UK it was different but in Australia it was very much the case. Class has always mattered when it comes to music and anyone with the name "Rohnny Jotten" knows that full well. We were raised on Pub Rock and for whatever reason OK Computer didn't get the traction hear it did where you are from. Radiohead were largely seen as prententious w a n k e r s by the Pub rock crowd. Where they did get a big following is with the Uni students. It happens - I'm sure the same happens in the UK with various foreign bands where they very much fall into different categories and have very different fanbases.
Actually "Tragic Kingdom" is probably a perfect example of disparate local fanbases - in the UK you have a pretty strong Ska tradtition and I can totally see that there was probably a dislike of a American ska influenced band - which is backed up by the chart positions of the albums where both albums went Platinum but OK Computer went 5X Platinum and did about Triple the sales numbers. The opposite is the case elsewhere - Tragic Kingdom has around double the sales of OK Computer with pretty much more sales in the US alone then OK Computer managed worldwide and is about 4.5x times the units moved. In Australia it's about 4x as succesful a OK Computer was. 70000 is no small amount of units to move in Australia but it's not 280000 which is what Tragic Kingdom moved or anywhere near what local band Regurgitator moved with "Unit" which moved 210000. Fat of the Land which ahs comparable sales worldwide sold double in Australia 140000 to 70000. .
Pink Floyd were different because they were pre-Punk and Australia happily lapped those albums up. I wasn't around in their prime to see the perception but they were always seen as being great live and Australia tends to respect that.
By the way - I am happy for people to love OK Computer and defend it to their hearts content - it's clearly a good album. I'm glad you love it - it's always good to have albums you love.

@@PresidentHotdog - I replied extensively to Rotten Johnny so I wont go too deep into it again but in Australia Radiohead were very much the darlings of the Uni set and this album moved 70000 units largely to that crowd. Prodigy moved double, Regurgitator triple, No Doubt quadruple, Oasis 8 times as much. Blur actually had a similar fanbase and moved about half as much and the difference between Oasis and Blur in Australia slaes wise for those albums is incredible 35000 to 560000. I think in the UK they are local bands and their cut through is different but in Australia bands like Blur and Radiohead fell into the category where their fanbase at the time was very much based around campuses - they moved decent numbers but were seen as more niche than I am sure they were in the UK. Glad you like their stuff - it's always good to love whatever albums appeal to you. .
