I must admit that the first time I saw both Jen and Kira float down to the base of the castle, I said to myself, "Oh, come on! No way! They would have dropped like a rock!" That's me-- trying to bring real world physics to the table. Then again, if the gelfling have hollow bones like a bird, and the gravity on Thra is not as strong as Earth's gravity, then possibly. Do we even know how much the average gelfling is supposed to weigh? In the scene with SkekMal single-handedly holding Rian up in front of the horrified gelflings, Rian looks like a doll in his clutches. Then again, the Hunter is very strong. Still, I have questions demanded by my rational (and slightly autistic) mind that require answers!
I suppose you could just say, "It's magic. That's all there is to it," and that would serve me right for bringing it up.
I'll be quiet now and go back to lurking.

Mentioning the Legends of the Dark Crystal makes me imagine a video comparing the skekLach from that continuity to the one seen in AOR.
According to Henson everything is canon... so I deal with the contradictions as mere misinformation in the story-telling (in universe) from the story-teller. Any society that passes down history through song or story has this issue, so why not the inhabitants of Thra? :D

The characters in the wall of destiny have pretty indistinct characters. No telling the gender of the winged characters, though a male with wings wouldn't be a bad story element.
Some would argue that they are clearly bearded. But Henson has officially said they are women (even if that may of not been the original intent). Either way, it is a fun topic to delve into and I will hopefully have it up in a month or less.

@@525Lines The character on the right of the Wall of Destiny looks like it has a "Fu Manchu" style moustache and possibly a beard. Ever since I saw it in "The World Of The Dark Crystal" book, I wondered about it because it seemed inconsistent with the story elements.
Deet is so beautiful in dark crystal age of resistance and she will beautiful with purple eyes(that she will look alike daenerys in the books) in dark crystal age of resistance season two
I wish those chapter books were canon since age of resistance show changed so much about that period of time where only one could be canon. for example Naia and Kylan go to Rians house and they meet his family and Rian himself there.
Yes, some elements of the book explain a lot about the show, and justify certain characters. I.e. I didn't think there was any point to the Kylan character in the series and didn't understand why he was there, until I read the YA novels.
2:00 interesting point about Drenchen physiology. Wonder why in that case Gurjin didn't seem to suffer much in the desert? Of course, he hasn't any wings, being male, but presumably he does have gills and other adaptations suited to watery environments.
Flying always seemed like a limited resource until Brea flew to + from this Sifan Coast in less than 2 days. I always thought that was an oversight. What are y'all's thoughts on this?

I originally said that we can even see Gelfling fly "great distances" but when I was making a graphic to show how far she flew, it turned out the coast spans much of known Thra, so she may of just flew around the mountain, and perhaps the ocean breeze made it an easy flight.
Are you going to talk about the mating dance that the female gelfling usually performs using her wings? I find it very interesting...

No mention of Seladon and what looked like artificial wings when challenged for a trial by air. I watched that scene after I saw your first gelfling wings video and lost my mind. Please do an honorable mention of it at some point.
That was just some Goth garb she put on over her wings. Her wings themself stayed the same.

@@luvzfrance24 She must have gone shopping at the Ha'rar Hot Topic where all the cool, trendy gelfling kids go to get their makeup, jewelry, and band T-shirts. Maybe Seladon finally had a use for the gift card she got for her birthday.
Since that Kira has those thin wings that only glide, do you think that the gelings of future Thea will not be a belt to fly anymore? Since she is the only female to pass down genes from.
In Power of the Dark Crystal, which takes place 100 trine after the events of the film, you still see Gelfling flying, and it appears that Kira herself has gotten better at it. Perhaps in the film she was still pretty new to it and she didn't really have anyone else there to be able to teach her. My best guess at least :)

A glider has no engine, but that does not mean it cannot stay in the air for hours or rise higher than it lunch height. A glider can catch updrafts and surf the winds in the air. You just need to know how to do it. I think Kira simply does not know how, given a lack of an adult female gelfling to teach her, and thus all she knows is how to glide down from a height.

5:30 this is a little dark and sad and real to think about, but I can't help wondering--could the female wing delicacy and vulnerability have a parallel with diminished human female strength (as compared to males)? A reading could be made about se xual vulnerability.
i can never quite make out what the medicine looks like at 07:20. Is it a flower?
I've wondered the same,... not certain. I turned on the Netflix English - Audio Description (sometimes it tells you precise things that they don't say). The narrator just said, "She gives Deet a container of blue salve". BUT WHAT IS THAT CONTAINER!? :D
@@DarkCrystalConjunction The medicine might not be a salve but the color suggest Vick's, so I understand the choice of words.
We never see Deet use or mention the salve again, so I'm not sure why this moment was included. Also, Deet doesn't seem to be in any pain or discomfort with her wings beyond that episode, so they must have healed fast.
for the gelfling girl who was born without wings (and the carvings of the men with wings) this could very well be because they're transgender.
there isn't a taboo againt being gay in thra. deet never gets a reaction when she says she has two dads, and the only reason tavra and onica aren't public about their relationship seems to be because they're from different clans. i don't see why gelfling society would be transphobic either.
not to mention the skeksis, who have their own complicated relationship with sex/gender in canon too.
You are correct. Actually, someone tweeted about finding that and pointed to that same character. The author himself retweeted it, which, I assume, means he agrees. I'll dig up the tweet... my searches aren't finding it at the moment.

Why does only girls have wings if they have boy kids but they dont grow with wings?
What’s there to explain lol? They can fly and that’s that. We are talking here about fantasy movie, it’s so obvious like the fact Emperor Palpatine can shoot electric current out his hands O_O
Hence the video, cause there is more to their wings than flying :)
