OMT is physical therapy of the mouth. It assists in correcting poor habits that we create to compensate for improper function of the head and neck. OMT helps people learn nasal breathing, proper lip seal, Proper tongue posture, and correct swallowing patter. Once these basic are established the ripple effect can be see throughout the body.
Better nasal breathing means the nose can now do its jobs, filter the air, warm the air, humidify the air and create nitic oxide (not nitrous oxide). All these things help our lungs function and allows our bodies to better use the oxygen we breathe. It can help reduce allergies, loud breathing, and hyperventilation.
In children reducing non-functional habits and creating functional habits can improve the formation of the face and airway.
In adults who are using various oral appliances to expand the palate or heal he temporomandibular joint (TMJ or jaw joint) they will see long term success as they add therapy to fix the cause of the narrow palate and jaw tension that happen in the first place.
