Holy heck it's the man himself! I was so engrossed in editing that I didn't even notice you dropped a movie while I was working on it. We will definitely check it out! We were all new to you going into Drowning in Potential, but we have come out fans!

@@Daxflame Thank you! And I totally agree, when we made our first movie watching reviews was a really interesting process. Seeing how other people interpreted the film, and took different things out of it then we ever intended was pretty cool. If you're ever looking for a cinematographer (or heck even a PA) I would love to work with you, we are in the LA area and are generally down to goof off and do silly things.
Dax, you sell the awkward, anxious, "trying to fit in" so unbelievably well, it's amazing. You deserve to go on to great things. I really hope so.
I haven't seen this film because I dont think i could stomach the slow pacing and awkward dialogue, but I'm super glad to see you guys gave Joel a passing grade. Would you guys be open to reviewing his previous film Pretend That You Love Me? I'd love to see your thoughts on that.
Yeah, like we said in the video, this movie is definitely not going to be everyone's cup of tea. I watched the first half of Pretend That You Love Me when I first found out about Joel, and never finished it. I am really interested in seeing it now after seeing Drowning in Potential. -Alec
I’d say of Joel’s stuff that this and the three features before it (minus the Oscar ones) are the better movies he’s
made.
“Pretend That You Love Me” is my favorite, but it and “Island” are rare examples of spoilable movies, so I can’t say much about them, but I think they’re worth sticking with if you’re unsure. They’re definitely his most unique work. “Forget About Everything for Awhile” is probably the most similar to this one, but not so much that I know how you’d feel about it. I like all of them. If you want to see him working with a script, “Taking a Little Time to Feel Sorry for Myself” is the only one I think. It’s alright for sure, but not amazing and “I’m Going to Be Famous” is interesting within the context of the movies he’s made. There’s a couple of great moments in there, just not enough to make it as good as the more recent stuff.
This video is cool, I watched through all his movies to make a vid going through them, but I doubt it’ll be as coherent as this so now I can just drop a link to here.
Thank you for the kind words! A lot of people have brought up Pretend That You Love Me, so it may be something we need to check out. Joel definitely earned our loyalty with Drowning, and I am curious to see how it fits within his larger body of work. You should absolutely still make your video though! We only talk about Drowning in Potential, with no prior knowledge of Joel's other movies, so you definitely have a perspective that would be significantly different from ours. @@UncleMikki oh I’m still gonna make it, I just meant for Drowning specifically that it’s a good resource that explains my thoughts better than a three minute blurb would. I’ll still have that section it’s just cool to have this as further reading since I had less to say about this movie than some of the others.
Joel Haver's features are a little, y'know... "mumblecore," but he knows what he's good at, he's funny, and I never get an "I just saw Pulp Fiction for the first time" vibe from his work.
He's the RUclipsr I'm most confident will actually make one of my favorite movies eventually.
I agree completely that he has the potential to make something truly amazing. As of writing, we have still only seen Drowning in Potential. From that, Joel clearly has a defined artistic voice and his movie is watchable (meaning there aren’t any technical/audio issues that kill the experience). Just those two things alone put him in a different league than most movies we’ve seen on the platform. It almost felt like a bonus that it was actually really funny and the characters were really well executed. As said in the video, I think that’s a product of the constant practice he gets doing his shorts.

waiting for the day the uncle mikki channel goes on a folk filmmaking binge and watches all the folk films.
This is a community I recently found out about, and I am super interested it it. I like that Joel is so vocal about choosing this style of making and releasing films. It makes me excited for what people that are inspired by him are going to do, but after just going through some forums and stuff it is clear that there is already a lot out there. So that day may not be far off! We love us some low budget movies.
@@UncleMikki There is some genius stuff out there. I curate a playlist of folk films from basically everyone I know, and I think there is over 250 feature films I found on youtube. Loved this episode btw, I know Joel personally, he was in my feature film Sheep Theater briefly, and I think you guys left a fair review. I disagree about the ending which I found incredibly moving but I think everything you guys said seemed well thought out and positively intentioned. There is definitely a market for reviewing these type of movies in this type of way. Keep it up!
@@The5DollarFilmSchool Funny enough, the day after we uploaded the video, one of the actors we regularly work with called me up and basically said we were poo-poo heads that don't understand art for not liking the ending. So that definitely could be the case XD And thank you! This movie really surprised us. As we said in the video, going into movies we are usually pretty cynical and it's really a testament to how well done Drowning in Potential is that it warmed our blackened hearts as much as it did. We are glad that this video is being received well. We are trying to direct our channel to focus more on low-budget/folk/student films and the making of those films. While reviewing them is fun, going into this year we are really fired up to make another movie in the folk film style. Our last movie, that we shot last summer, was a blast to make but we spent a lot of time and money on it. We feel reinvigorated to make something more planted in our scrappy roots.

Hey I'm still going to watch the rest of the video. But "demolishing RUclipsrs" really turned me off. I just felt like it's not a good thing to say. Kinda rude
Well I hope you found the rest of the video more enjoyable! I know you shouldn’t explain jokes, but the “demolishing RUclipsrs” bit was a bit of a sarcastic response to people who commented on our ralphthemoviemaker videos saying that we just say bad stuff about a bigger RUclipsr than us for views. In reality we are here to talk about the material that was made and have some fun making jokes in the process. I even say in this video something like “I was hoping I would hate it because hate gets views”, but we really liked the movie and had a lot of positive things to say. Oh we do lots of creatively fulfilling things! We do the reviews purely for fun. I also believe we understand the movie quite well, just don’t think it executes those ideas as well as it could have. We liked what it was trying to do a lot though
