  • Wooden Dummy Form is mainly about recovering from mistakes, and if this is not properly understood, all the applications will be done out of CONTEXT and they will be ineffective. Today we will look at the first section of the form and the first sequence of movements. We will discuss it's applications and also throw in some non-Hong Kong energetics.

That counter grab move at 4:20 is so cool. My former JKD/KALI instructor, had learned that move from Master Richard Bastilo(RIP), who had probably learned that move from Guro Dan Inosanto.

I hope you post the all the sections and give some explanations like you just did.
When I learned the form, I barely got any explanation of the movements, the school I went to, preached that the dummy is where all the "techniques and combinations" came from.
Which made no sense to me, since all the demonstrations of the applications I saw from Ip chun, involved throwing the 'wrong bong'. But what you are saying makes much more sense, if the bong is thrown to the inside of the arm, doing a tan to get back outside and striking to the ribs is a good recovery. If the person pulls the bonged arm back you hit the ribs before another shot comes from that same arm, if they pull and try to punch with the other arm you still hit first and are covered by the tan.

Excellent video. Chan Sifu knowsexactly what he's doing. Reminds me of the "all nighters" at the US Wing Chun Academy, Grand Master Chan Shing's (Cris Chan) kwoon in San Francisco (1420 B Market Street, no longer there. Now, the kwoon is out in the Sunset District on Judah). Chan Jung Shi had the real power. Here Chan Sifu shows the authentic Ip Man wing chun. It's more than evident in the angles and basic laws of Wing Chun in his execution of the 1rst stage.
    Thank you Sifu.

Watching this again, I see what you mean about the miss and the recovery grabs, and what they are for. OMG ! did I trip out on "why am i doing this?" I was taught to attack the dummy from left first vs opponents right hand, and then from the right vs the opponents left hand punch. I learned to do the Hop- like entry move in left or right stance. I have only seen Grand Master William Cheung do that and teach that.
This why I really like when you speak of Hong Kong Wing Chun or any others that come to mind. You understand that there are several different types of Wing Chun training. ...and you even know where it came from. I never questioned my Sifu, I just moved right along and did what I was told. I trusted him. and he taught me a great Martial Art.
also I learned Mook Jong form 1st in the air, then on dummy and then against an opponent or application. This was standard, you had to do all 3 in front of Sifu or you could not advance in system. This is THE WAY....

I'm back.. Thx for explaination on grab . I learned Cheung style Mook Jong which is a hop (to close the distance quickly) a , bil sau block and the the grab and pull into a punch. I always felt if the left hand is grabbing him , then why not a hit? so now I see why..

Fantastic. In many of your videos I see and hear about things / principles / applications I haven't heard before. I learned the wooden dummy form several years ago and practice it each week, and the past few years I also do some 'freestyle' dummy where I'll start away and 'pseudo spar' with it, brainstorming techniques and movements. You can do it with MMA gloves or boxing gloves too, or palm strikes. I also like working on boxing slips and attacks or counterattacks, coming from various angles and shifts.
I also like to experiment with shifting, rolling hands, and strikes, pulls, shifts, elbows, knees, all sorts of strikes and deflections, to 'free your mind' and help train multiple / continuous attacks vs. just a single punch or techniques - to get into more 'flow' and improvisation.
I am thinking I should get your new course, to learn and expand upon what I've learned, and I can help new students learn things faster than what I did, and better apply things.
Actually the neck grab information reminds me of when I took Krav Maga classes for a year, we would grab the neck or the shirt. When you got inside an arcing punch, you can slam your rotating forearm into the attacker's neck, then just rotate that hand to hook their neck or shirt, and slam knees into them.
I'll keep an open mind, keep learning, keep brainstorming, I appreciate all that you and Chris (and whoever else works with you) do, have an awesome day.

I remember when my Sifu first showed me that technique. I said can I have my neck back? 23 years later. I am still playing air dummy. This tax season I am getting my mook jong. I've been teaching my 8 year old daughter pak sao and don chi sao. And now I am showing her tan dar to pak dar. I feel if I play the jong with a real jong. She may get more interested. Since I work and NYC rents are off the chain. I never opened a school. I grew up in NYC. As a kid going to Chinatown you would find just about every Southern Style school along Canal St. to the Bowery to East Bway. Wei Hong Fu Jow Pai was on the Bowery. Walk under the Manhattan Bridge a few minutes away. And you would find Moy Yat my Sifu's second Wing Chun master. After 911 the rents pushed everyone out. And schools closed or moved to other areas. And the pandemic has made it even worse. 😪

My son wants to learn Wing Chun but he's only 10. He's been doing TKD and Shotokan since he was 4 1/2. Once he turns 13, he's going to join Wing Chun where we live at. He loves martial arts lol but won't watch a Jackie Chan or a Bruce Lee flick. Great video!!

For a smooth transition practice the kata tekki 1, 2, 3 using Naihanchi dachi instead of Shiko dachi. Also Hangetsu with Sanchin dachi instead of Hangetsu dachi.

I've been in a few street fights I believe there is no way you can prepare for this kinda thing > I believe if I was going to give you advice on training I would tell you to train with sand bags, why? Because it's functional, and when the shit hits the fan, you'll need this kinda strength.

That's a difficult 1 except being in a property where the sound insulation meets with today's building regulations.
Or that place dummy on a absorbing thicker matt rubber type.
Or that use but not so heavy when trying
      out application forms strikes etc.
This is Tom. Several years or more now been following Adam chan & love is insight to Wing Chun.
I can't see him writing any comments to prople whom have written in comments section.
