This machine leaves too much grass grow back. It grows back fast enough without leaving grass half into the cut zone.

to remove the soil berm , so that the water can drain away from the road

In Alabama, we call it "clipping the shoulders". It is to keep positive drainage of the roadway. That a pretty good machine, we could actually reuse that material on roadways that was just overlayed with asphalt to eliminate unsafe dropoffs.

Seems like they are creating a hazard. If a wheel goes off the macadam the driver looses control with the different height. Waste of time and money!

Lots of USA places do it too. I agree - really will cause an accident.

There is no drop-off hazard as described above because the machine cuts the berm of sod and soil down to the same grade as the pavement, not below it (it uses the edge of pavement as a guide) and from there the shoulder will have a smooth downward slope of only a few percent to allow water to drain off, like it did when the road was built. This kind of work isn't a waste of time or money, because if the berms are ignored, water will pool on the road and damage it in two ways: it will create potholes directly in the wheel-track by soaking through cracks in the pavement and weakening the base; and if the water runs along the road on even a slight incline, it will eventually find a low point in the berm and burst through it, creating a deep wash-out in the shoulder (now that's a wheel hazard) or possibly washing out the base material to the point that a section of the pavement itself collapses. The real waste of time and money is shoveling hundreds of tons of asphalt into potholes over the life of the road surface, and performing repairs to stubborn washouts that occur over and over again in the same spot, all of which can be limited or prevented by performing this quick operation once every few years.

@@retep9187 I totally agree with your comment. The comments are from people who don't know or understand the principles of roadway construction. It is best to leave road construction and maintenance to the professionals who are out there everyday trying prevent future damage to roadways.
