Tough, gritty, etc whatever some ppl might wanna say, sure why not, but he's not throwing a world champ middleweight out the damn ring...that notion is ridiculous. @@ravenaussie3760 My proof is that he had a reputation for doing that. He did it against Joe Smith in his last fight and against Chad Dawson before that. He was losing both fights and by consensus opinion he faked an ankle injury in the Smith fight. The replay showed his feet straight up in the air, neither ankle touched anything but air.
If you're known for faking like that then you've earn a rep that you have to accept will follow you. In this case few if any will believe that a gentle push from the referee rendered him helpless like a rag doll. If you want solid proof you're asking a ridiculous question. This is a comment section where opinion is given.

I think the ankle was probably already injured before the fight, he couldn't back out, and re-injured it during the fight. I don't know how that would've affected the purse, but that's likely what happened. I doubt he quit.... just hurt something worse that was already in bad shape most likely.

I trained Mike Tyson with Cus D'amato back in the 80s. I also am a life-long boxing historian.
When Mike Tyson fired me -along with all the other members of "Team Tyson" in the late 80s- I mostly lost my interest in boxing.
As a result, I am JUST NOW, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, becoming acquainted with Bernard Hopkins -via youtube video footage of his fights...
I have long heard of Bernard Hopkins but have actually never watched his fights. According to "BoxRec" -which is a source I greatly trust and VERY OFTEN agree with- Hopkins is rated as the #1 MIDDLEWEIGHT OF THE PAST 50 YEARS...AND THE 7TH GREATESET BOXER OF ANY WEIGHT CLASS IN BOXING HISTORY.
So "BoxRec" opines that Hopkins is the best middleweight since about the time of Sugar Ray Robinson to the present date -- and that thus Hopkins is a better heavyweight than Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and many, many other greats of the past 50 years. THE 7TH GREATEST BOXER EVER! Is he really THIS good?
His W-L record isn't outstanding; in fact only decent: 58 wins and 8 losses. He did fight, at a very high level until as late as his late 40s.
This fight is the first fight I've seen footage of him. His personality seems mediocre and blaise, and his fighting style undistinguished; though his defense and head movement in this fight was good. I am only judging Hopkins from this fight; which is the first footage EVER that I've seen of him.
The 1990s was easily, perhaps, the most 'bizarre' and 'interesting' era of boxing -especially in the heavyweight division: Lots of strange things happened in that decade: Mike Tyson biting Holyfield's ear; the "fan-man" fight (Holyfield-Bowe II?); Oliver McCall having a mental breakdown in the middle of his fight with Lennox Lewis; and many others...
I decided to watch this youtube fight because I have never HEARD OF......nor SEEN........a referee push a boxer out of the ring -injuring a boxer.
Mills Lane is a very, very good and respectable referee who has handled lots of unexpected situations in fights; such as Mike Tyson biting Holyfield's ears.
The way I saw it, when Mills Lane pushed Hopkins out of the ring, it was simply a very 'bizarre accident.' I don't fault Mills Lane at all: Robert Allen had Hopkins already in a slump and off balance. By the time, Mill Lanes intervened, to separate both fighters, Hopkins was already on his way to the floor and just 'accidentally' went through the ropes. Allen was just as much at fault, in my opinion, as was Mill Lanes.
Amazing, strange, bizarre accident; kind of funny to watch.....this is the first time I've ever seen anything like this in a boxing match.

    • @MrMarco855
      @MrMarco855 2 года назад +1

Interesting that you were involved with Tyson. I have aquestion if you don't mind. I developed a theory and maybe you can offer an opinion about it. When Tyson left prison, Don King was still salivating over a mega-fight between Tyson and Holyfield. It almost happened beforeTyson went to prison, and I think Don King was determined to cash in on the big fighht even though nearly 4 years had passed by. Plans were made and Tyson only needed a few warmup fights to convince everyone that he was still the old Tyson.
Fast forward several years after the 2 big fights between Tyson and Holyfield took place. I was looking for a fight to watch one day and I saw that Tyson had fought Bruce Selden so I decided to watch it, not thinking anything unusual about it. It happens that this fight was the 4th warmup fight for Tyson post prison release, in preparation for a big fight against Holyfield. Tyson looked impressive and easily beat all 4 opponents, thus the big fight vs. Holyfield was going to happen.
I saw something in the Tyson/ Selden fight that got me thinking. There's zero doubt that Selden took a dive against Tyson. He went down on an overhand right that was 6 inches over his head. There was a perfect side view of it and Tyson's glove never touched Selden. He got up, went down again a few seconds later on a punch that either hit him in the chest area or didn't land at all. When he got up he looked okay briefly, then his legs began to wobble and the fight was stopped. It was the worst acting in a fake fight I've ever seen.
Wait a minute. Why would Tyson have 3 legitimate warmup fights only to have the 4th fight fixed? It made no sense,....unless all 4 warmup fights were fixed. In my mind that's the only reason to fix the last of the 4 warmup fights, if they also fixed the other 3. It had been 4 years since Tyson was in a real fight. It's not automatic that he could return and be as good as before. King would stop at nothing to cash in on what was likely to be 2 mega-fights against Holyfield, but there was some risk involved that the fights may never happen.
If Tyson wasn't the same as before, he could either lose a warmup fight or look bad in one or more of them, even if he won.If Tyson had a couple of mediocre performances or God forbid if he lost one of the fights, then Tyson vs. Holyfield would lose some interest and possibly end the plans for the fight to happen. King may have decided that it was too risky to have Tyson actually fight 4 opponents, this was going to be a huge payday for King and hewaited 4 years so he wanted nothing to get in theway. Tyson himself may have told King that he wasn't the same or that his heart wasn't in it like it had been at one time. That's what happened in the end, When Tyson retired he said that he lost the desire along the way.
The only way I could be certain was to watch the other 3 fights. The 1st was against a guy with an inflated record that was basically unheard of. It happens that his manager was a mobster and he fixed that fight, betting against his own fighter at huge odds that he wouldn't make 90 seconds with Tyson. King didn't have to fix that fight but there were still 2 others. Tyson vs. Buster Mathis Jr. was as ridiculous as any I've seen. Tyson was firing huge bombs in the first 2 rounds, I counted roughly 45 power punches thrown but none of them landed. He missed every power shot he threw, some were a foot over Mathis's head. The announcers went silent briefly, they didn't know what to say. Finally one of them said ' Tyson sure is rusty'. He wasn't rusty, he was rotten. The 3rd round began, Tyson landed one punch, Mathis went down in a heap, the fight was over.
Then there was big Frank Bruno from England. They fought once before, it was a rugged fight that went 6 or so rounds. Tyson stopped him but it wasn't a walk in the park by any means. In this warmup rematch they went 4 or 5 rounds I think, Tyson stopped him again. Of note was that they waltzed around holding each other for a very long time. Of the 12 or 15 minutes that the fight lasted, they were locked in a clinch about half of the time roughly. That left very little time for actually fighting, or in a fixed fight it left little time for pretending. It appeared to be a set plan to stay clinched so they didn't have to do as much acting.Tyson landed a few shots at the end but overall is was a sissy fight compared to their first fight.
I still wasn't 100% convinced, I needed one more thing to be certain. I checked all 4 opponents to see what was otherwise going on in their careers. Mathis was only 26 but he had a history of serious health problems due to being very overweight. He already planned to retire early and he did retire after one or two more fights. It made sense therefore, that Mathis might take a nice payday before he left the sport.
Bruce Selden was a good fighter but he lost all 3 fights against top opponents. He also had a bad drug problem and already said he was going to retire and enter a rehab clinic. He did retire after this fight. Next was Frank Bruno. He had a very frustrating career in which he failed twice to win a title. He was clinically depressed at one point over the issue. For no realistic reason he was offered one last chance at a title at the age of 35. It didn't seem justified but he got the title shot just the same. The fight was against a weak champion and he prevailed, finally getting his coveted title. Don King was the pronmoter for that title fight, he made a deal with Bruno apparently. He gave Frank a chance to win a title in exchange for the promise to take a dive against Tyson. He had nothing to lose as he planned to retire after winning the belt, and he did retire after the dive vs. Tyson. As I said before, the 4th fight was handled by the manager of the 4th opponent, and he definitely fixed that fight.
I became convinced after finding that all 4 opponents had reason to take a dive and without concern for hurting their careers. I was concerned over the issue because I couldn't imagine how Don King could find 4 guys to take a dive, but after checking it made sense for each opponent to take one more nice payday before retiring. The fact that all 4 fell into that category is convincing enough to suspect something was amiss, but watching the fights proved to me that all 4 fights were fixed. Don King wanted to take no chances that Tyson would look bad or lose any of the 4 fights, so he found a way to bypass that concern that guaranteed he would get his pot of gold after all.
That leads me to theTyson/ Holyfield fights. Tyson looked impressive in his 4 'warmup fights', nobody knew they were all fixed. Holyfield was a beaten down warrior at the time and he didn't look good in his last couple fights. He had 10 rugged brawls whileTyson was in prison so Tyson seemed fresh compared to a worn out, ragged Holyfield. The odds reflected this scenario, opening at 25 to 1 for Tyson. Interesting however that the odds closed at 9 to 1, down 16 points from early betting. That's extremely unusual, the odds don't move anywhere near that much normally but in this case someone 'knew something'. A massive bet or bets had to have occurred to drop the odds that much. I'll bet that Don King bet every nickel he had against Tyson at 9 to 1. Between Tyson and King I think they understood that Tyson would most likely lose, or they planned for Tyson to take a flop. The ear sandwich may have been substituted for a typical dive, possibly because Tyson got pissed and lost his mind. In effect he took a dive by eating Holyfield's ear. I fully believe that this is what took place, I never say 100% but I will say I'm 99.9999% certain that this is what happened.. What do you think?

You can tell by repeatedly viewing the videotape of the moment when Hopkins "fell" out of the boxing ring that Referee Mills Lane did not push Bernard Hopkins with enough force to make Hopkins fall out of the ring! Lane was just trying to separate the fighters after Allen repeatedly punched Hopkins while Allen held his arm around Hopkins' neck in a clinch. Hopkins definitely deliberately fell out of the ring on purpose to get a "no contest" ruling!
