As a musician who is most decidedly NOT a singer, it is so interesting to hear the comments of a musician AND very accomplished singer who picks up all the details that are lost on most. Thank you!
For me, this is one of Angelina Jordan’s most impressive performances, precisely because she steps out of her comfort zone, yet bravely goes all in and does an amazing job. Everyone who has heard just a few of her songs knows she can sing the jazz standards brilliantly. But who knew she could combine that rich tone, beautiful low register and huskiness with belting out these high notes - and move so effortlessly between the styles that they gel instead of jar? So no, belting up high is not what she does BEST, but she does it damn well!

Norwegians give their children a teaspoon of “Talent Syrup” once a week. Angelina must have found few bottles and overdosed on them. LOL
After turning many lucrative offers from many major labels as well as Disney over the last few years, Angelina signed with Republic Records as their “highest priority new artist”. She announced about a year ago that she was working on an Album of all original songs, then came the pandemic and things slowed down. Hopefully it will be released soon.

I really like your professional analysis of Angelina. You seem to catch a lot of those little things that make her so special. As you said, this is outside of Angelina's normal style. You can tell when you listen to this one that she was really testing the boundaries and pushing against them. She seems to be someone that is constantly growing, and constantly challenging herself to expand her abilities. I think nobody gets as good as she is without going outside the comfort zone often.
Interesting side note... a few weeks after this video was published, Angelina was singing this song with David Foster (the guy that wrote it for whitney) accompanying her on keyboard when they were working together on a charity event.
You asked about her original and new stuff...... The new album that she is working on (under Republic Records) is moving slow this year because of the pandemic, but I would expect something by early 2021. Angelina has 5 original songs published in the last couple years. 3 are her original works, and 2 are songs written by other artists specifically for her vocals. This is the order in which they were released......

Her voice and ability has more sides to it than a rubik's cube. I have yet to see her take on a genre or style of singing that she couldn't handle.

Very well done, Caleb. I am sure you also noted that she was a little tight just before she went up on that high note you highlighted. She knew exactly how much she had to give that higher switch and note, just about her everything, and just for a second was too tight on the build-up to it. But all in all this performance is outstanding, coming from a girl just turned 13, also being outside her comfort zone. It is really well done. I think even we untrained, amateur voice critics understand that Angelina is out of her comfort zone here. I still enjoyed this, even though I like classic Angelina best. In just about any Angelina performance what’s remarkable is her calmness, ease, and relaxation. You watch, listen, and wonder because the amazing performances seem to be effortless to her. On this song, you could tell she was reaching. I think this performance is exactly as advertised: a tribute to Whitney. Yes, kudos to Angelina for her adventurousness
Both Shield and What is Life are great songs that Angelina wrote. Try one of those, both for the musical talent and for the amazing emotional depth of thought behind the lyrics. Or, if you want to see Angelina stretching her zone unbelievably, watch I’d Rather Go Blind. It’s an Angelina you’ve never heard (or expected) and one, I’m sure, you’ll never hear again. Thoroughly original, unique, and completely enjoyable.
When she stops growing i dont think she be stretching as most ppl tend to forget that shes only 12 here. At 13 sheis 6ft tall. Mother nature hasnt finished harnassing her just imagine the power and vocal ability she will have when shes 21
Yeah, definitely at this age the voice hasn't fully matured and often belting is much more difficult at this age.
Angelina has been testing the waters until now to find her own style, she has promised lots of originals very soon 😍👍

In case you don't know, Angelina has signed with Republic Records (the same label as Amy Winehouse, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande), and they have committed to making her their "highest priority new artist." In fact, for a 12-year-old girl, getting involved with this song and this singer ... is something that not even many adults can safely do. Yet she does it with a calm and apparent ease that is disarming, it is a beautiful interpretation, so mixed with tribute and personal talent that it leaves one admired. We hope that the collaboration with Republic Records will allow her to be herself and make it easier for her to be even better known, allowing us to have her new songs to listen to, again and again.
I really do looking to hearing some new stuff and I hope her new record company will help her release something great and do her justice.
You are the first reactor to note her ability to go outside her comfort zone and still possess the ability to carry through. You have to wonder how many takes and enhancements it took with Whitney to achieve the final release. Here is Miss one take just turning thirteen doing something she had never done before to a backing track.

I am amazed that here is 12-year old Angelina at home or in a small studio singing this with a backing track in one take, when 29-year old Whitney was in a major recording studio with all of the bells and whistles they have to produce hit records. (Confession .. this is probably at least the 25 th time I've heard this .. and most of her songs .. for a full- on confession😊) I like reminding reactors of her age. 12! And yes, this is clearly a push for her .. but she is endlessly gutsy. Only one comment .. hearing anyone copying how she sings hurts. Sorry .. cause I do love your voice. Angelina's first attempt at a Whitney cover was at the age of 18 months! before her Grandma introduced her to Jazz! She tries many styles of singing and shares these raw performances with us all.

I understand that she started putting together an album of original songs (after AGT champions) but the pandemic has caused a pause as she lives in L.A. and the studio is in New York. I guess that in normal circumstances she would have launched the album with a concert tour...
I hope she gets to release it soon, the pandemic has gotten in the way of a lot and I would love to hear more of her stuff!

Love Don't Let Me Go came out on May 5th. Album is to be released after she graduates high school. She is the writer and composer on all her music. She also has numerous I Have Nothing releases when she was 16. You would like 7th Heaven and Suspicious Minds, and Million Miles all her originals.
I think you hit what amazes me about Angelina when you mentioned the "autotune" fad at the end. Just about all of her videos are, essentially, live performances. One take, no do-overs, no autotune. Just Angelina stepping up to a microphone and delivering the goods, with all their perfect imperfections.
Yeah I think the way she does that is very special and much more human.
@@CalebColesMusic But if you study this particular video very carefully, you can tell that the audio doesn't match the video in several different places, meaning it's almost certainly pieced together from multiple takes. Still, Whitney's original almost certainly wasn't a single take, either, so… [grin]
@@DonaldLancon I know what you mean but what your seeing is a high skill/talent she uses sometimes called back phrasing. That's why it looks like that.
@@ooshta No, I'm talking about several specific points in the video when what her mouth is doing is either out of sync with or doesn't match in other ways the audio we are hearing (even though most of the time, they do match). That's not backphrasing; that would have to be ventriloquism. [wink] If you'd like, I can point you to an exhaustive list of such moments that I posted at another reaction to this song.
Thx for this interesting reaction, that's a completely new view on this song. Most vocal coaches only focused on watching if she can reach the high notes required in this song so far. It's also my impression she's looking for challenges.
While we are still waiting (impatiently) for any news on the new album, she did some originals you didnt cover yet:
"Oslo" and "What is Life?". She also did some excursions through collaborations with Nico Cartosio (Song for A) and TRXD (Above the water, EDM) which both are original songs. Technically you could also call her cover of "Back to Black" an original, since she replaced the lyrics. According to the story her mum gave her an ultimatum to replace the text or forget the song. She had only one day to do that.
Thanks Caleb for explaining things to us that you pick up on with you been a musician and singer it helps us to understand music a lot more but for most of us we just like what we hear and for a young lady at the age of just 12 Angelina did a fantastic job and going by what you said you also agree that she did a great job too.You haven't mist out on any new songs yet as the virus put a stop to all that but she has now signed for Republic Records with her uncle being her manger it sounds as though Angelina and her uncle Michael have signed on there own terms and got the deal they wanted I believe it will give Angelina free to do other things like her charity work and also have her own input about what she sings and how she sings them so hopefully we will be able to buy her Album soon I just hope and pray they don't try to change her in any way but I know her uncle won't ever let that happen they are a very close knit family so she will be very well looked after just as they have always done I'm glad her uncle is her manger that way they keep it in the family Great Reaction 💖love from Denise in England 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👼🏻👼🏻💖😘👋byeXX

As you mentioned very brave and imo also a sign of her amazing modesty to still take on such a song which is kind of completely against her nature.
Given the circumstances and since her new album certainly will have a speciaI meaning in terms of her career I guess we still have to wait some time until it will be released.

I must give you Calwb - THE best reaction ever! I've been following Angelina and her covers and are amazed by this girl with her capacity. You on the other hand, compared to all other reactioneers, are absolutely professional and accurate. Inust love to hear your comments regarding her singing technique. If she is good - you definitely are!
Late last year there was a short video of her with David Foster on piano practicing this for a benefit concert . David wrote the song and produced it for Whitney
It is really important to remember that she is probably an alto. Although this song makes me wonder if she is a mezzo, actually. However, of course it would be easier for a soprano to reach those insane notes. But would they be able to reach the low notes like Angelina does in the Adele renditions?
Yes totally agree ...she is very brave to take a big risk singing out of her comfort zone ... And yes she sang a bit pitchy just a bit ....but she is only 13yo singin a that a legend difficult song of a lendary singer....time will make her perfect ...however she still made me had a goosebump ...that realy cool she never fail me.....nice reaction sir
And then there is “Oslo” another of her originals songs. I think by now you’ve heard Angelina signed with Republic Records as a High Priority Artist (not sure what that means). I do believe Angelina was working on new material before we got hit with COVID-19. Now that she’s signed, I hope to see an original album sometime in 2021.
She applies her 5 octave range effortlessly and captures the true essence of Whitney's classic song.

The special thing about Angelina Jordan is that her songs are not all that intellectual. She was only about 13 when she sang this song. When they listen to this song, many people forget this is not just a cover but a tribute to Whitney Houston after her death. Angelina was honoring Whitney Houston by showing what she loves about the singer and at the same time gently adding what she thought would improve the song. In my opinion, there was a wistfulness about the song and certain moments that illustrates how she loves Whitney Houston’s music and how she was sad that Whitney Houston is no longer here to hear this rendition of the song.
Another excellent reaction. Although you didn’t mention it she was only 12 when this was recorded. When you factor that in, it really makes this performance more astounding. Have you ever reacted to her cover of “The Show Must Go On”? I think it it one of her best performances to date.
Always great to see you react to her. Yes, belting is not her strong suit. But I love her fearlessness. I think belting works best on her cover of The Show Must Go On. Lately I've been really loving her take on Happier (like so many others she picks, a great song). She did apparently have an album of originals, but that might be on hold now that she signed with Republic. I have noted else where that the jazz greats that inspired her recorded very few songs they wrote. Others have pointed out the Linda Ronstadt and others make fine careers out of covers. We'll see.

if you listen to the whitney original she does the same inflections or bends in those high notes. if you take out what sounds like a bit of straining, it no longer sounds like an rnb, soul, jazz singer, it sounds like a pop singer. the more i listen to it the more i think it is basically perfect.

Whether there may have been one or two technical issues throughout the entire song, Angelina demonstrated her biggest strength in conveying emotion. Her body movements, her hand gestures, her holding her hand over her heart, and looking at the camera at times, made it feel like she was singing it to you directly. Furthermore, at only 12 or 13 years old here, she is conveying those emotions as if she has lived and experienced them. I will never get over how she has that ability to project feelings that she has not experienced in life.
I think perhaps Angelina's "tribute" to Whitney here was to sing Whitney's song pretty much Whitney's way (of course, with a few AJ flavors and spices added in). Going somewhat out of her comfort zone with a one take, raw, unprocessed "here it is" delivery is quite a tribute. And it also answers a question on another side of what AJ can deliver when she wants, when she "ain't playin".

Wow, Caleb -- what a great reaction. "Outside her comfort zone" is exactly right. AJ does push the high notes, particularly when she was really belting. She does in fact waver sometimes. But what an enormously brave performance for someone who's 13. The confidence it takes to perform "I Have Nothing" -- as a tribute to one of the most accomplished popular vocalists in history (Whitney is underappreciated for her articulation and breath control vs. her range and volume) -- is just exceptional. Thanks for putting this performance in such great context.

I have a feeling you might like to analyse her voice in "Song for A", which she didn't write herself, but she was asked to sing by a Russian semi-classical composer (Cartosio).
One of her most beautiful interpretations, if you ask me and not a cover this time. It's as if she incorporated all kind of voices into her own. Sounds new and familiar at the same time. You can't see her though, but that might focus extra on the voice! :-)
