I've been waiting for this video. What a pleasant surprise to end the weekend. Congratulations on your roof! You've done an excellent job. The animals are beautiful and you both seem highly productive, as always. I hope you get the rain you need to thrive on your homestead. The drought seems to be a world-wide phenomenon, but it is worse in some places than others. Can't wait to see your next video...

For the garden it is all about nutrients, heat and sunlight. We have trouble getting the tomatoes to ripen due to the fog. However 90 miles away in hot and sunny Sacramento, California they grow great there. So the sooner you can get your vegetable beds warm the better they will grow. One year I put my chicken manure in ground during the winter, that summer the tomatoes grew like crazy!

I don't know why I missed this, I'm so glad I checked your old videos! Well done as always, it's always great to see how industrious and in love with your land and animals you are. If I can give you a tip for next summer tomatoes, it is very useful to remove the suckers (I think this is the English name) which are the stems that grow between two branches and are usually darker than the other branches, they steal a lot of nourishment from the plant. By removing them the tomatoes will grow faster, more numerous and bigger. We have had so many of them this summer that even though we made tomato sauce (it's a tradition here in Italy) there are still many left over that we put in the freezer :)

😁 We here in the States only refer to the seeds as coriander; the green part we call Cilantro.
I've been told by food experts that half the people in the world think it taste like soap and the other half think it tastes like a wonderful herb.
I was in the first group of people at first but I ate it so much now I think it tastes wonderful. And no it doesn't taste like soap to me anymore at all. Tell T to keep eating it..

Huh, interesting to have different namnes on the same plant and yeah it seems to be the case of hate or love and noting in between! I will put some in our food daily maybe so he will get used to it :D /Tova

I'm with Mathias, cilantro tastes like soap to me, or even worse, like stinkbugs! LOL .. I too have heard it's a genetic predisposition to either hate or love it. For years I didn't understand how ANYONE could love it .. and then I learned why my friends weren't simply crazy.

That pig lovvveeeddd being scratched, just like my dog. I connected immediately, as I get joy from scratching my dog and making him feel good, and I bet that you do too. Just showing love to a critter, even if it is going to eventually be food, especially if it is, just being kind while you can, that is what life is about. I love how your homestead is growing and you're making things work.

My Farmor was from Sweden. And my Morfar from Norway. Your accent brings a smile to my heart and reminds me of her. I remember her making pickles every summer. I am a coriander FREAK. So is my husband. In the summer, I make. Cold tomato soup with cucumbers and avocado and red onions and lime. It’s soo good. Where I live in the states ( Utah look up the 2002 olympics) we get VERY dry in the summer and we have fires every year. We were very blessed to only have 3 or 4 this year. Other years I remember the ash coming down in the shape of leaves.

i'm up to this video now. it was great to see the roof on your chalet. (pronounced sha-LAY in french), it reminded me very much of when we restored our 300 year old house in france in 1989. so exciting! took at least 3 years to get inside, another 5 years to finish most of the rooms. it's still a "work in progress."
    the pigs are adorable.
cilantro (coriander leaves) is great with salsa! ole!
one more thing: matias reacting to the chickens when they crow is priceless. it's like, "excuse me, i'm *talking*?"

Hi, the house roof looks wonderful - congratulations. I've started watching from the very beginning of your vlog history and now my husband watches with me. It is what we call 'Slow Television', where we wait patiently for the next episode, rather than downloading the whole lot. However, we're way behind and slowly catching up with the most current vlogs. A female sheep is called a Ewe - which is pronounced like 'you' - such are the peculiarities of the English language! Take care and all the best and thank you so much for your vlogs - we really enjoy watching them and the love the care you put into your homestead, all the animals, the wood you carve, the food you cook and every aspect of all your vlogs.

We've raised many a hog here at our farm. The last 2 we did were Tamworth breed. The BEST tasting we've ever done. Female sheep are ewes ( you s) Yes, milk "whey" is what that is. Great for feed. We made a scratching post - my husband put old bristle parts to push brooms on a cedar post in the groud...oh, they loved to rub on them. That one "riding" the other is just showing dominance...who is boss.

I've made dill pickles for decades, now, but last year we discovered horseradish pickles. I grow horseradish, so I'll have to try it out next year! We harvest horseradish in April or early May, though, and cucumbers aren't ready until mid to late July, so I might have to do either store bought cucumbers in April or store bought horseradish in July.

If you make dilly beans and carrots they are soooo good! The summer of 2018 in Alberta Canada where I am was extremely dry as well. There was also a lot of forest fires. When I had pigs to raise I also had dairy goats (20+) and a milk cow. I milked them all by hand twice a day every day. I always fed the extra whole milk after taking some for house milk and bottle feeding some of the goat kids(no processing what so ever) to the pigs. From the day each litter was born I usually kept 2 or 3 to raise and until butchering time they were just shy of 6 months old and their hanging weight was always a bit over 230 pounds. The pork was the best I ever tasted, most likely due to all the milk and butter fat etc in the milk.I also had a very profilic garden and planted several extras for the pigs. I planted extra Zucchini, extra cucumbers, extra squashes, extra pumpkins etc (Pumpkin seeds are anatural anti parasitic and the pigs got a lot of tha)
I don't have my little farm any more and really miss all the goats, chickens, pigs, calves etc. I think that's one reason I've continued to watch all of your videos. I've been binge watching since I discovered your tube channel. I truly believe what you two young people are doing (getting back to basics) is absolutely spot on. I find myself Praying to some day have another farm where I can have a few animals again even if it's only chickens. Love your videos and the soft speaking you 2 do. It has seriously affected your animals in a great way. Take care and happy farm steading off the grid.

I love coriander. In Southern California it is more commonly known by its Spanish name, "cilantro" (see-lawn-tro: accent on 2nd syllable) which is a staple in the wonderful Mexican and Asian cuisine that is offered to us. (It is also known as "Asian parsley")
In defense of Mathias, I believe it would also be a refreshing additive to soap...but there is no accounting for taste!!

My husband thinks its tastes like salt aswell. (Sorry watching older vids cuz ....well i want too lol). But if you remove the leaves, and finely chop the stem, and start adding only the stems to food... (they are crispy and they dont have such a soapy flavor, more mild) then he will adjust. His taste picked up how fresh it is. Not soapy. After awhile of that, he will get a custom to coriander. Then u can use the whole plant! (I actually prefer mostly stem these days because it took my husband quiet some time to come around to the leaves, lol. But it still works)

I live in Canada and we seem to have similar weather to you where i am .. first i love your videos and am binge watching them!! you guys are great keep it up!! .. also tomatoes and peppers take the longest for sure ... there is a few things you can do .. pinch off the top of the plant because then they start to put some extra focus on the fruit ... where you think you are ok with that much tomato on the plant pinch it there .. pinching is taking off the plant at that part ... also make some compost tea :) that will help with the roots and growth .. put some of you rabbit poop or chicken or compost in a buckt with water and let sit for a day or to then water at the roots ... another thing is you could dig a hole and "plant" scrapes of food there the bugs will come and help break it down and give the plants what they need :) also if you have green tomatoes at the end of season pick them and put them in a sunny window and turn them every so ofter and they will ripen there to :) loving your channel!!

Good to see that you are safe from the fires. The new house is looking great - maybe you will be undercover by winter? In England we would call what you are doing 'smallholding' - like a farm, but not as big and usually run by one family. I think your tomatoes need a high potash (potassium) feed to get good sized sweet fruits - my cucumbers doing well too!

It would be the dream to have a ready house by winter but that will not be the case unfortunately, we both have a full-time job right now during the summer, besides all the daily chores at home, and there are always those small projects that show up and needs attention. :) We go slow and do a little here and there.Thank you for the tip on potassium, i will check on it tomorrow! Just started watching your videos a few weeks ago and really enjoy them. I agree with Mathias, coriander/cilantro taste just like soap. Terrible! I avoid eating it. Glad to see that the forest fires didn't affect your homestead.

I have the coriander (cilantro) soap gene also. The first time I made salsa I thought I somehow got my dish soap in the batch and threw it all away. I think it is so odd that this plant has this effect on peoples taste buds. I have the same kind of thing with boxwood or juniper bushes. To most people they smell fresh and pine smell. To me they smell like cat pee. Love your vids!

    Yes, ejoyed watching again, thanks!
The pigs are great, little bit over reacting and drama queens :) This summer has been good for solar panels, lot of sun. The negative side has been the endless dryness. We just had finally rain yesterday but our well is empty for now and we had to get the water from the spring further. At least the rain filled couple barrels so we have water for animals, plants and washing for the becoming days.
Tova, you have very nice garden! It’s been good year for the cucumbers here too but somehow my tomatoes don’t blush at all too. Is it the poor watering or what? Now there is one finally coming, but this has been a wholly odd summer. All good for you two! ~Tessa

Drama queens :D (They are actually named after two older brothers in the village, so not drama queens!) The rains are here for real now, gone are the dryness and sadly also the warmth. It feels like summer are over :/
Thank you, I really love my garden but have sadly no "green fingers", my tomatoes are still mostly green, the chilis are green..i think i water good but maybe not..hmm. All the best! /Tova

I love coriander. There is a large and unfortunate population that have tastebuds that are extremely sensitive to a chemical in coriander that tastes like burned rubber or soap.

I love cilantro (the leafy part of coriander - here in America) but my husband does not. All your animals are so healthy and lovely. Ha Ha, the pigs are so funny. The pickles looked amazing and I bet they tasted good! Pictures in those cookbooks are usually photo enhanced so don't mind how they look in reality.

Female sheep = Ewe. The males are also called tups here in the UK...
Fun fact about the word sheep is that you don't add an S to make a plural. Sheep = 1 sheep and Sheep = multiple sheep....:D

Do you have a way to seal your canning jars? If so you might want to try this recipe for pickles.
    Bread 'n' Butter Pickles
    4 GREEN BELL PEPPERS, chopped
8 cups *PICKLING CUCUMBERS, referred to as English Pickles
unpeeled, thinly sliced horizontally 1/16 inch (1.59 cm)
(approximately one cucumber equals one cup)
    2 cups ONIONS, diced
sprinkle all lightly with: PICKLING SALT (do not use table salt with iodine)
    BASE: 2 cups CIDER VINEGAR
    3 cups SUGAR
    1 teaspoon ground CINNAMON
    2 teaspoon powdered TURMERIC
    2 teaspoon CELERY SEEDS
2 teaspoon MUSTARD SEEDS (or 1 teaspoon ground)
    1) Combine first four ingredients, and let stand one hour in a colander to drain off liquid.
    2) Combine BASE ingredients in huge pan, cover and bring to a boil.
    3) Combine the first mixture with boiling BASE ingredients, cover, and simmer lively for 40 minutes.
    ASSEMBLE JARS:
    1) Place in boiled jars, remove bubbles with a wooden chop stick, (non-metal).
    2) Wipe jar rim clear for a good seal. Seal jars. Remember everything hot in canning.
    3) Place sealed jars back in canner and boil 10 minutes.
    4) Remove each jar from water bath and place on a towel overnight to cool.
    5) Refrigerate and eat any pickles from jars that did not seal.
    Makes 9 half pint jars.

We call coriander (dry form) cilantro (leafy fresh). It tastes wonderful in dishes, but adding too much to a dish makes it taste like dish soap.

    • @Talasbuan
      @Talasbuan  5 лет назад +1

I wonder why its different names depending on if its dry or not, here its the same! :) I always have a lot of cilantro in my food, the more the merrier ;)

    • @bellagray4444
      @bellagray4444 5 лет назад

Talasbuan, Yes it is weird to have the two names. It was likely to save any confusion in a recipe that calls for one over the other.
