  • This is the classic 15 round fight between Muhammad Ali & Oscar Bonavena. Ali appeared to be losing the fight by a small margin until Ali Knocked Oscar down 3 times in the middle of the last round. Because of the 3 round knock out rule ali won the fight by a knock out.

I don't care what the critics say, this is one of my favorite Ali fights. He adjusted his style and threw some of his hardest shots here. He wasn't the same Ali but to be honest I like this version more. Fuck the critics.

He gave up his title when he was in his prime,no other fighter did this.He lost millions of dollars. He was facing prison time and won his appeal,He couldnt fight for 3 1/2 yrs and came back and kicked ass.Frazier couldnt knock him out.Frazier knocked him down, but he got right back up.
This was a good fight.Alli has fans all over the world. He gave thousands of dollars to the poor, handed money out right on the street. What other boxer did this ??? None did.
Alli was slower, but he was hitting harder,he was still fast though, faster than foreman

Cossell says "where's the old Ali style". He against Ali's adaptive style? He says "There's no action" exactly when Bonavena's nose begins to bleed and his left eye is beet red, from a 2 big Ali smashes @6:35 and 9:50. Cossell's book of statements is a small book and its unrelated to what's happening in the ring.

Never ask a vegan P.E.T.A. member for the best recipe to cook veal.
Always take into account the opinion of people who had a big problem with Ali's protest against the Vietnam war that cost him the best 4 years of his prime, which they had no protest against.
      Some never got over it.
I don't care what anyone changes their names to, except Bruce Jenner.
But the fact that Frazier's camp and many more couldn't get past it is a big tell.
The flag wrapped so tightly around their heads and neck meant their brains weren't getting enough oxygen and they couldn't see the forest for the tree's.
Howard is embarrassing to listen to.
Ali beating him every round in the punch count and Howard almost wetting himself the few time Bonavena hit him with anything of consequence.

Oscar Natalio Bonavena was Argentina's most famous heavyweight boxer from 1964 until his murder in 1976. He was 6' 1" tall and weighed a muscular 217lbs. Nicknamed "Ringo" because of his "Beattle's" style haircut, he compiled a 58-9- 1 record with 44 knockout victories. He became famous for knocking down future Heavyweight Champion Joe Frazier twice in their first fight (Bonavena lost two decisions), going 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali(before being knocked out for the only time in his career), and for dropping close decisions to two more former champions Floyd Patterson and Jimmy Ellis. Bonavena's lifestyle outside of the ring was just as colorful. A friendly, yet not always even tempered man, he was a noted "partier" and had "an eye" for the ladies. In 1976, he launched a comeback in the United States in Reno, Nevada and won a 10 round decision over Billy Joiner. It would turn out to be the last fight of his career. He was shot and killed at the Mustang Ranch on May 22, 1976 in the parking lot by a Ranch "security guard". He was given a hero's burial in his native Argentina.

If he had one more tough fight that went 12-15 rounds--I think that would have given him the necessary prep to beat Frazier. (However, Ali still fought a TREMENDOUS fight against Frazier--he landed some VICIOUS shots against Joe--any other fighter would have been TKO'd at the least but Frazier was willing to die in the ring if he had to--nobody was going to beat him that night!!)

Ali had no choice about the timing of his bout with Frazier. His draft case was still pending in the courts and the possibility that he might actually have to go to prison was very real. Had the Supreme Court not ruled in his favor later that year we might not have ever seen Ali vs Frazier.

It was painfully evident that the 3 1/2 years off was too much for Ali to overcome and that he wasn’t going to beat a prime Joe Frazier in 1971. His speed ,stamina and movement weren’t the same as they were in the 1960s. The 1970s showed his heart, determination and ability to absorb punishment that he didn’t need to really display previously.

One thing i've noticed with a lot of Ali fights, especially once he came back from suspension, was his propensity for using his glove to pull his opponents head down - sometimes even maneuvering his opponent off balance, which wears them out quicker. Referees never seemed to do much about it apart from a warning here and there.

It looks to me like Ali would get tired dancing before Bonavena got tired throwing bombs. Plus Bonavena can take a lot of punishment and still keep moving forward. Bonavena was clumsy and Ali wasn’t having much trouble slugging it out so maybe he figured he’d do that until he saw an opportunity to drop him.

At this point, in the comment section going from most recent to now...not a lot is taken in consideration of Clay's future debilitating disease and how perhaps, unnoticeably it may have had it's own affect, even here.
I found the match very rough to be patient to watch it all, but hey...it's Clay.
Still, you DO have to give it to someone who displays SO much heart, like Bonavena did.
If only that amazing endurance lasted another 1 minute or so.
Then he wouldn't have been knocked out.
BUT...take into mind that it wouldn't have happened if it weren't for Bonavena's "GO GET HIM", attitude.
He simply could have clenched and just lost in a decision.
      Stamina is a bitch.

Oscar Bonavena was a hero to the people of Argentina. He had an impressive
58 wins 44 by knockout.Unfortunately Oscar took to the party life. Less than six
years after this Ali fight Oscar would be dead. At 33 years old in 1976 he was
shot and killed by a security guard at the Mustang Ranch after a argument
with the owner. His body lie in state at Luna Park in Buenos Aires where more
than 150,000 people paid their respects.. I know Ali is still the greatest! But Oscar
was one tough fighter. His life outside the ring killed him.

This is where Ali began to learn two things. First, he was not the same fighter as four years earlier (nor would he ever be again-that younger, in-form Ali would have, as Angelo Dundee said, destroyed everyone in his path for years to come). Secondly, he learned that he could take a punch, which was not a good thing to learn and was probably a significant factor in his eventual neurological decline at a far-too-early age. He could take the hardest punches that Frazier, Foreman, and Shavers could dish out, and still beat them. The fact that he fought and beat every top boxer of his era, avoiding none, for many years shows just how good he was, even though never the fighter he could have been without the three and a half-year hiatus. If he wasn't the best there ever was, only Joe Louis could claim that status (and Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and Cus D'Amato all agreed that Joe Louis was the best ever INSIDE the ring, and even Ali, who was actually very fond of Joe Louis, did say, "I used to tease Joe Louis by reminding him that I was the greatest of all time. But Joe Louis was the greatest heavyweight fighter ever.")
Maybe it's always going to be dubious to say of anyone "the greatest ever," as each champion was the best of his own time, and it's impossible to actually compare them with certainty, but Joe Louis and Ali were very special, each in his own way, and it seems that at their best, it's hard to imagine anyone beating them. Outside the ring, though, it was Muhammad Ali, the 'people's champion', who was truly "the greatest."

I'm seeing so many comments stating that, apparently based on his commentary during this fight, it looks to them as if Cosell definitely didn't like Ali. These guys are either too young, or don't know much about boxing, or both. They don't know Cosell's history with Ali. They were actually friends. When mainstream America didn't appreciate Ali's refusal to serve in the military, Cosell was one of the few media figures of note to publicly support Ali. It was a brave thing for Cosell to do. He certainly stuck his neck out for him.
