- Lost UCL Final against Man. Utd
- Lost Euro 08 Final against Spain
- Finished Premier League 2nd (2 points away from Man Utd champions)

Not really tied to players but I think there's a League 1 curse for clubs. Basically, a lot teams that were relegated from the premier league also have a tendency to eventually/immediately drop down to league 1 as well. Examples:
- Nottingham Forest
- Leicester City
- Bolton
- Wolves
- Wigan
- Blackpool
- Leeds United
- Southampton
- Norwich
- Sheffield United
- Charlton Athletic
- Portsmouth

Dont forget Ballack losing the premier league on the last day, champions league final and European cup final in 2008, the man has sure had some bad times
And in 2010 he even lost his career when Boateng broke his legs and afterwards Ballack was never ever called up for Germany by Löw again who lied for almost a whole year until summer 2011 that Ballack would still have a chance and during that time still be Germany's official captain although never being called up while he was playing really good at Leverkusen according to the media at the time.

I really felt bad for Ballack back then. Every big Final he was part of was a defeat for his team.
But he was by far the best german footballer of his time. A working mashine. Just as good in winning the ball as in making goals. His Freekicks were brutal and his headers some of the best, especially after corners. He also was a pure Boss on the pitch, made for wearing the captains bow.
Too bad that in his best years german football went from awful just to the recovery stage in which he started to decline. But thanks to him and some few others even in harsh times german football made some remarkable accomplishments in reaching the WC final and Leverkusen the CL final in 2002. Both were lost but against far superior opponents which was no shame.

you forgot to mention that Ballack wasn't even conisdered by FIFA in top 3 players of 2002. He finished 8th, Zidane who missed the entire world cup got 3rd.

Hold up, didn’t really explain ballacks unluckiness. Lost champions league in 2001 then received a yellow card preventing him from playing World Cup final then lost the champions league again then in that summer lost the Euros final to Spain then was injured in final game of the season meaning he missed 2010 World Cup. That’s bad luck.
You forgot to mention that Ballack also lost a Champions league final in 2008 against Manchester United the Euro final against Spain, and in 2010 FA cup final he suffered an injury that kept him out of the South Africa World Cup, his last chance of winning that silverware.. and you might mention Schweinsteiger as well, even if he won the treble with Bayern and WC with Germany, he lost several finals on his career, Pokal, WC and UCL and a lot of injuries.
I can't believe you mentioned Ballack without mentioning 2008 when he was runner up in the premier league to man utd, runner up in the league cup final to spurs, runner up in the champions league final to man utd and runner up to Spain in the Euro 2008 final!! Balla I had an amazing career but he was indeed very unlucky. He is one of my all time favourites an I watched him as a teenager at Leverkusen and Bayern. Incredibly powerful. Sadly he missed out on so many titles even though in my opinion being one of the best box to box midfielders ever

Not that it matters but Bela Guttmann was a traveling manager. He never stayed beyond 3 years for any club. So when he asked for his raise (which was reasonable at the time, he was being underpaid) he certainly did overreact in a dramatic episode. So in the end it's all just a coincidence, a really weird one at that.

You could add Buffon, for never winning the UCL despite being in 4 UCL finals, or the Strip Club curse (I mean the UCL trophy, many people have touched the UCL trophy during the walk to the pitch (basically every Monaco player in 04/05 final comes to mind) then they lose on penalties or extra-time. Okay, he isn't the world star he once was anymore, but that was his own fault. Playing at extremely emotional and irrational thinking Schalke 04 with their extremely unrealistic fans - the big club has been waiting for a championship since the 1950's - is always a very big risk for any player or coach.
