  • Highs and lows in this week's Crew Stories, Tristan tells us about his birthday trip to the Bahamas then flying to Fort Lauderdale with a friend to look for a job. After realising his US visa didn't allow him to work and heading home, they are left stranded with no money and no place to stay.
At the airport a good samaritan from Virgin helps out, taking them back to his house, giving them dinner, a room for the night and a chance to earn their keep. Slowly they learn more about their saviour. After losing touch, Tristan has been paying it forward ever since. Was it you?!

I had a similar rescue. There were three of us stranded in Hong Kong, in bad weather, miles from our ship, and no taxis would stop for us. Americans pre changeover, when someone had recently caused a fuss. An amazing couple stopped to ask us if we were from the training ship that was in the paper? We were. They adopted us for the rest of the afternoon, giving us a tour, a luncheon, a visit to their penthouse suite, and a ride to the British gates for our dock. They were missing their daughters my age, and were from Montecito, just an hour from my hometown. It was amazing. I instantly sent the thank you note. A very small world.

I’ll never forget being stranded in France in 1990 and a couple paid for our tickets on the ferry and took us to their home where we stayed in their motor home, the next day they dropped us off at a motorway service station, gave us enough money to get us home. Over the last 30 years we have tried to do something similar whenever we see the opportunity to help someone.

I was thinking the same and I've got some great stories from my time in the business. I ran a 87 Hatteras Sport Fisherman before getting into yachts that was a complete party barge. It mysteriously sunk while the crew and I were on vacation, but my boss was nice enough to recommend me to his friend with a 108ft Broward. The Broward was more or less a brothel for the who's who in the Northeast US. But thankfully it was sold soon after I got the job and the new owners kept me on.

SouthJerseySound I also have some experience in the business, I worked on a 125’ delta m/y Bolero, he should definitely get his crew/ friends in the business on here to tell their stories

@@bennetttravers9535 Delta makes a great boat and have an amazing yard. I know a guy who did the great loop with a detour through the Panama canal on up to Alaska and back on a Delta 70 (just over 3 years). It's one of their early yachts(1989) and has a more commercial look, but was perfect for a retired fisherman. He was actually going to buy a new Nordhavn 62 or 64 (cant remember) But wasn't too keen on buying a "Chinese boat" .He almost gave up and it was the last boat he was going to look at before buying a new Nordhavn. I went with him and my dad to help survey it and I was very impressed with the build quality. I didn't know at the time but they started in commercial boats and it showed in this one. Thankfully though they got better with their interiors ;-) But he bought it because it was rugged.

SouthJerseySound man the great loop is a on the bucket list, that sounds like and amazing trip, Bolero was a 1998 build but refitted 2014-15 I believe

@@bennetttravers9535 My dad did the loop on his 1981 Grand Banks 42 Classic. I wish I could've done the whole trip with him but am happy I did about a third or so(Cape May to SC and Muskegon MI to NYC). People think it takes a big boat but there where plenty of boats down to 25 ish on up to you name it. But 30-50 is the sweet spot, smaller or larger can cause problems, But the little guys just had to watch the weather. Too big had depth and height problems. I'm actually looking for something like a 36 Banks Classic to do it with my daughters. Anyway good luck and don't hesitate to do it, its an amazing trip.

I remember as a student in the UK, visiting my sister in the south of France and returning back to the UK. I had a train from, I believe it was Nimes, wandering the city until there was nothing left open, then working my way back to the train station and sleeping on my backpack, against a wall on the quay until my train arrived at 3 am. I was around 17-18. good times!

Lovely story. I had a similar one in the US as well back in 1993 - end of my 1st year at University - had a J1 visa to legally work in US but couldn't find work in NY so with my last $100 hopped on a 10 bus journey to Ocean City in Maryland and found work at a theme park luckily - but before that was homeless on beach and moved on by police - I was helped by a religous group who put me up for the night. Now, I'm not religious but eternally grateful.

I have some great stories from my time in yachting. I started as a mate in my teens doing fishing charters here in Cape May and got my 6 pack (OUPV) ticket by 19. When I was 21 or so I grabbed a job running a fuel dock for a few months since I was done fishing for the year. It was my second time there and was a great way to meet people and make some last minute money. The first time there I met a retired officer from the Marines who had a Hinckley H-64 sailboat that was waiting on crew. He was behind the fuel dock since they were the biggest slips and we got to talking. His wife loved the boat but had a medical issue that affected her balance so she couldn't sail anymore. After a while we became friends and when his crew backed out I offered to go. Legally he couldn't pay me as crew but the marina closed so I had unemployment benefits and went for the experience. It was a great time and with what he "gave me" and my unemployment I did ok and was happy to get the experience. I had my first experience with pirates off of Grenada, learned that a Marine is always a Marine and they're always armed. Also he was serious when he said not to mess with his daughter even though she just turned 25 and was a 2nd grade teacher lol. Once he found out we made a detour towards Port of Spain and the next morning there was a ticket to NYC on the table. In hindsight he was doing me a favor, but that is a whole different story ;-) The second time I worked there I found a spot on a brand new 87ft Hatteras Sport fisherman who's owner bought it after his divorce. It was the ultimate bachelor pad and was a blast up until it was sunk mysteriously while the crew was away. We later found out it was the ex wife who was angry over the prenuptial agreement and a former crewmember who I had replaced...…...I could fill a hour of video easily with just the stories I'm allowed to tell lol.

This same thing happens all the time but the victim ends up in the sex trade.
There is always help for broke travelers: the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, get your family to pay for a hotel with a credit card online, ask for help at a church, call your embassy for help, ask the police, etc. If they can't help you directly, they can often help get you in touch with somebody who can or at least get you in contact with your family so they can send you emergency money or help arrange things for you.

Everybody thinks rich people are snobby pricks? Absolutely not true. It's just the guilt-trip being touted by people who seem to think rich people are villians, simply because they're rich. Most rich people don't chase fame so they can fit into the population just like a poor person. I think that's very good of them, but the tree-hugging anti-everythingers would prefer you to believe they are infiltrating the ranks of the poor so as to undermine theem.

Beautiful stories are creating only by beautiful people. What ever we offer to the society out there in a hidden way, it comes back to us in the future in a strange way.
So just think about only this. What did you receive from a strange kind hearted person, do it to another person who needs your help in the name of the love and live, you got in Bahamas.
This is the only way to be thankful to the Bahamas guy and he will receive it.
The other think that I am sure is the Bahamas philanthropist received in his life in the past, what he offered to you and to your friend in your difficult situation.
So just behave in the way of love in a hidden way to the people, without the expectations to get back what did you offer. This is the true meaning of life.

Tristan, have you been in a situation where you have been able to 'pay it forward?'

Who is he talking too? Tone is too presentational rather than a chat with someone? 🤥 Onboard videos are good, but these, well, could be better, shame really...

Dude. Just finished the whole upload. I can understand forgetting an email address. But you forget his NAME. After that insult you ask HIM to contact you? Just as well you're a superyacht captain....You'd be great at navigating shallow depths. Please go back to your core posts. They offered valuable insight to the crew perspective of the industry. But I gotta ask,,, Are you STILL in the same position with the same employer on the same boat? You haven't punched anything very recent from AWOL lately. So I gotta ask.

A miserable SOB troll such as yourself would be better off going to pound sand. What he's doing is NONE of your business unless he decides to share it and even then its not your business.
