Its weird that Mr. Regular didn’t touch on the main appeal of V8 RWD compact cars; its fun. Putting a loud expressive engine with a distinct character in a visually distinct and attractive small car thats agile and engaging is FUN. Its not about having the fastest, the most comfortable, the most quiet, the most reliable, and the most capable car on the road, but about how many of those boxes are ticked while being entertaining. The moment you buy for the best as a car enthusiast is the moment you already lost.
ther RWD is so overly safe and computerized, that a regular person wouldnt know if its a RWD if they drove it. You Have to turn Traction Control off and Stability control off for it to feel like its a RWD, and even then when you try to push it to the limit, the computer tries to correct it.
@@floggyWM1 That's absolutely false. The moment you drive the car it screams RWD. Yes traction will limit you from sending it sideways, but once it's completely off, the computer will not interfere at all. It's very linear and predictable. A pure joy to slide!
As a valet no other car felt like "do you know who my dad is?!" than this car. I was stoked to get to drive one and completely deflated by how sitting in the seat felt like riding someone else's coattails. Plenty of cars I drove actually were bought with daddy's accomplishments but this one, irrespective of its owner, was the only one that felt like it.
So glad you managed to review one of these! I've got an '08 ISF and absolutely love it. The older 2URGSE engines don't rev white as high as the current is500 and LC, but it still delivers much of the same experience. Only thing I wish I had was the slightly softer sprung ride and fold down seats of the is500, as it's a bit stiff on crappy Ontario roads and can't really fit much for a road trip
I can definitely see this car being a future classic. Potentially a good investment. Like people who bought 90s Japanese sports cars back when they were dirt cheap in the 00s and early 10s. Possibly a solid buy for someone who has the means.
@@andrewgarcia3136 The part I don't really like is the rear. I noticed it's a bit prius shaped, I'm sure it's due to the safety standards. The older gen Lexus cars didn't have such a large and high sitting trunk with a small rear glass.
Owning a GS400, I can definitely appreciate the build quality of Lexus V8. Got the GS400 for my daughter, and while it’s 22 Y/O it became our family go-to road trip.
I'm so proud of Lexus for culminating over 100 years of Automotive ICE tech and giving us a product that will stand the test of time. The perfect Car to end an Era.
I just got one of these last weekend and had to come back and watch this. :) I agree with the "can't flex" part. Honestly, most people, if they even know what an IS is in the first place, probably think it's the 350. But I like that. I just want to drive the car and not be instantly recognized as that guy. And honestly, the "worst cargo space in its class" is kinda misleading. It has a nice trunk for what it is. The measurement is not quite indicative of how usable it is.
I was shocked to find my 2011 accord V6 was smoother to drive and accelerate than a new Toyota Camry 4cyl, it's made me realize how smooth a V8 sedan must be to drive
Lexus always seems to make cars that would've been hailed as pretty great...several years ago. The commercials showing the passion and fun, when the highest spec you usually see is an IS350 and even that is rare compared to a sea of IS200t, 250 and 300t's. I appreciate Lexus to an extent, but I've come away disappointed from most I drove. They're fine cars for casual driving, a luxury car for those who aren't car people. The actual F cars are even in themselves underwhelming, relying more on a mix of "More reliable than a German car!" to make up for their high cost but performance that doesn't even match a common Camaro SS or Mustang GT (That said German cars are often equal to in performance while maintaining their luxury). But once you get a taste of what is possible, it's like tasting a cheap grocery store cake after having a slice from a Michelin star restaurant. It's a shallow substitute for what you long for. Luxury always dated, performance always behind. But just like that grocery store cake, every week it's there for you. It tries its best, but it wins no awards - but you can't afford the alternative, so it's the more palatable alternative to buying store brand cookies instead.
Something tells me you haven't spend enough time with a Lexus to fall in love with it, and that's coming from someone who also drives a Mercedes. You can have all the flashy and gimmicky bits in a Mercedes, but it will never feel as mature and well-built on the inside as a Lexus. I like both of them and definitely wouldn't put one of the two behind the other in ratings. They both have their pros and cons.
This is the best explanation of lexus sports sedans I’ve heard. They are just “ok” never doing anything exceptionally well. Never the most luxurious, never the quickest or the fastest. Never the best looking. Just reliable. A known quantity. After driving an is300 f sport before I bought my current car, I finally understood why the magazines were always underwhelmed by these cars.
The Lexus CEO even said in a statement conveying he doesn't want Lexus to be the "boring" brand. Yet its already been several years since he said that and the only thing Lexus has to show for it is this outdated 2010 styled IS500. Meanwhile the German brands all have brought out updated versions in the past couple years of their sport variations.
I drove a mustang gt wasn’t that great and I know the motor won’t last as long as the 2UR. I got the Lexus instead and also ford marks up a ton which is not worth the price. Camaros here are hard to come buy and you will be waiting a long time. I also drove a bmw the steering wasn’t too great and felt numb at times and than in sport mode it felt too heavy.
@@roninbushito the coyote is very reliable. Gen 1 coyote in an f150 with almost 200k miles and it was running very strong, only sold it to get something smaller. They also are much more tunable than any lexus engine
I have a 18 300F. Such a visually pleasing sedan. Drives great, lotta power, plenty space. Nicest vehicle I’ve owned. Mpg kinda sucks but if you’re buying one, you can afford the small increase.
that is true, but people that buy 100k m3s, dont care about reliability because they wont keep it for long, they want the latest engineering, technology, power, ect. this Lexus engine been around since 2007 ISF, and is pretty much bulletproof but super outdated. If you look at the past 10 years of an M3, how much changes engineering went into it, is crazy. Went from v8 414hp , to inline 6 425hp, to 500hp. m3 comp does 0-60 in like 3.2 seconds. Thats one thing about BMW, they are no reliable, and not cheap, but you are paying for that engineering.
This is wrong. The b58 engine bmw used is one of the if not the most reliable engines out there. So reliable, that is passed Toyotas own reliability testing for the Supra. I used to the think the same but then I gave it a chance and realized that the brand has improved drastically. Almost everyone here in New England is driving them.
It's a final farewell to a beautiful era. Of course it can't compete with The New. But it doesn't try to. It doesn't have to. If this is the end, there couldn't be a better car to mark it. It's a swan song, and boy, is it an epic one!
One thing I really appreciate is that Lexus still put the old iconic logo on the back instead of the LEXUS word like the ones in the new RX, NX and LX.
I have a 3 in soul red and an IS 350 in infrared. The Lexus feels like the colour is 3 layers deeper. Same colour, but the IS feels like it's inches thick. Hard to explain.
I Dunno... those new Lexus commercials sure have alot of hipsters in them. Also Pre-nostalgia is going to be my new go-to catch-phrase when I need to impluse buy anything. Thank RCR for feeding my addiction.
A 4-Cyliinder Camry, speaking from experience, does not like long distances and will eventually wear on you after a gallon of gas is consumed. A used 3-Series comes with mysterious electrical problems that somehow never, ever go away, and a strange smell that's equally persistent. The Camry 6SM is as you said, rare, and is even worse for Toyota nerds giving you shit for those same reasons. Electric cars still aren't there yet for a lot of reasons but are being pushed there like a couple who price their son out of living at home even though he's trapped in a dead-end retail job and has no hope of making rent anywhere. And I still wouldn't have one because the IS in general, regardless of engine, has been the calling card of tryhards, even more than that weird-smelling BMW, who wish to look like go-getters to both girls and their bosses but never quite know when to quit; they are the calling card of the Corporate Bro, who may have grown out of popped collars and Natty Ice, but only as far as Kohl's 3-piece suits and Bud Light despite having the means, and perhaps the need, to go further. Much like Lexus' current droop-quality interior, "good enough" is never good enough; it just means coasting. Perhaps we shouldn't think this way, but perhaps we also shouldn't be punishing people that want to drive and enjoy it by railroading them into poor decisions for nefarious business reasons cosplaying as popular environmentalism, or designing the world around the scourge of smartphones, or forcing a kid to move out on principle even though he can't afford it.
I don’t think I’ll ever part with my ISF, Lexus cornered the market with small sedans with solid performance. Makes for a great daily you can track prep and not worry about reliability
Yeah, except you'll get a 20$ movement in you 300$ watch. Just use your phone in that case, for 300$ you'll have a phone that'll be more versitile and more accurate than an overpriced Citizen Eco Drive. Why would you even want to buy a watch with an ok quality 20$ quartz movement for 300$?

With the addition of the Kamasu 2, which has a standard diver cipher, like the one featured on the Ray 2, but also has a sapphire crystal like the og Kamasu, it really is the only sub 250$ mechanical diver watch you should buy. this is a damn good looking car! if I were in the market for a sport sedan like an m3 id buy this in a heartbeat! 472 bhp just sounds like a shit load to me but its not super crazy anymore!
A manual and a naturally aspirated v8 plus rear wheel drive? I'd buy that over the new beaver m3 or C63 no matter how much power they make or how fast they go. I wish that's what it was about for more people, experience rather than stats and showing off
You'd have a hell of a time finding one. I called around the whole state looking for one and I was told they're not producing them currently due to a supply chain issue.
@@svenskfox they haven't been producing them for a few months now. Its insane that i got mine for msrp in February, and now with almost 9k miles ppl are willing to pay 80k for it. The IS500 is not a 80k car by any means. 60k is a fair price.
450+ hP is still insane relative to the price of this car…compared to Benz/BMW sport sedans. Even Cadillac is much more expensive. And of course Dodge has the sweet spot in price when it comes to V8 sedans but it ain’t luxury or everyone’s cup of tea.

This is so weird to see. Lexus haven't sold anything other than 4cyl hybrids in the UK for like 10 years. Only reason I haven't had an IS is because I don't want a small engined hybrid. If they sold something like this over here I'd have one.
I work with someone who lives in Italy who drives an 2019 IS hybrid and even with the higher gas prices there, he still drools over the IS500 and would buy one in a heartbeat if they sold it there. But he's most likely the silent minority.
They do sell the LC 500 (v8) and you can still get the RCF (V8) but thats the only 2 options in the UK. We miss out on so many models and variants :/

@@floggyWM1
That's absolutely false. The moment you drive the car it screams RWD. Yes traction will limit you from sending it sideways, but once it's completely off, the computer will not interfere at all. It's very linear and predictable. A pure joy to slide!

I just got one of these last weekend and had to come back and watch this. :)
I agree with the "can't flex" part.
I’m not sure I’ve really learnt anything about cars watching your videos, but I have laughed heavily, a lot. Thank you RCR.
I was shocked to find my 2011 accord V6 was smoother to drive and accelerate than a new Toyota Camry 4cyl, it's made me realize how smooth a V8 sedan must be to drive
Of course V6s will always be smoother than 4 cylinders whether it's turbocharged or not.
The fact you made a gnar pump reference was wild, my two favorite creators coming together haha

One thing you can't do in a BMW that you can do with this; keep it beyond the warranty 🤣
so true
You can definitely keep a bimmer out of warranty if you intend to use it as paperweight
that is true, but people that buy 100k m3s, dont care about reliability because they wont keep it for long, they want the latest engineering, technology, power, ect.
this Lexus engine been around since 2007 ISF, and is pretty much bulletproof but super outdated.
@@floggyWM1 So true!! After the first 3 years people move onto their next BMW.
That motor is a dream. Love it in my ISF

Seiko 5 series and Orient are probably the best bang for the buck mechanical watches on the market right now.
@@bucknasty69 Orient is currently the go to. Since the Discontinuation of the SKX, there hadn't really been a reason to buy a Seiko Diver-style watch, as the Ray 2 and the Kamasu were as good mechanically, and featured a much needed 20 bar water resistance rating. With the addition of the Kamasu 2, which has a standard diver cipher, like the one featured on the Ray 2, but also has a sapphire crystal like the og Kamasu, it really is the only sub 250$ mechanical diver watch you should buy.
