Confession time: I didnt even know I had a self cleaning oven till I watched your video and checked the manual! :-) Now I am officially in love. A) with my oven and B) most importantly with you! Thank you Melissa! :-)
Funny story: My oven needs cleaning (self-) and my parents came over for Thanksgiving. I thought, " before Christmas Vacation, (I am a teacher.) I want to clean my oven. But I don't know how? I betcha Melissa has a video that will teaches how to do this!". And I looked this morning, and you do! Not surprised. Thank you so much!!!!!!! For everything!
Thanks to you, I am now officially a clean freak! I find things to clean now. Lol. Thank you. When my house is clean or I've really deep cleaned something I feel so much better about it and myself.
Melissa! I did it! I cleaned my self clean oven following this video. I've got to say it looks great! There was some smoke, but not too much. I love the results, thank you sooooo much for posting this video.
I cleaned my oven with baking soda , waited 2 hours. Wiped clean with vinegar. Soooo. Soooo. Clean. . Thank you. For the 2 hr wait. ! My tenants had 2 fires in my new oven . I couldn’t ever get it cleaned til 2 days ago. Thank you.
We grew up cleaning our own ovens and I continued as I got older. Although I have a self cleaning oven, I still clean it by hand. I’m in my 40’s and have RA and said, “I wonder how this works”?. Went straight to RUclips. I know, I know read the manual :). Thank you for your help!
Fantastic video! I followed the instructions and tried this feature for the first time. It worked out awesome! Through your cleaning tips you helped me get over my fear of trying the self-clean option. Thanks Melissa! :)
Omg this video took my fear away of self cleaning my oven! I thought it was a scary process like it could blow up or something but I tried it and it's awesome! Thanks so much for such a amazing video!! love love your videos!
Amazing video - very informative! I am a home economics teacher and I haven't ever seen this explained so simply and clearly! Thank you!!! This would make a great teaching tool!!
Thank you so much! I did not know a lot of this, and now I feel prepared to use the self cleaning feature of my oven! I wish I had a self cleaning bathroom too!! :)
Unfortunately had some foil burnt onto the bottom of my self-cleaning oven - I tried baking soda - that didn't work. So I turned on the self-clean feature - which I think permanently burned it into the oven base. Any ideas on how I can get this off? Also - the "forever drip marks" between oven windows - any ideas on how to remove those?
I'm glad I watched this as I've seen other videos using baking soda to clean the oven. I didn't realize the pyrolytic (thanks for the new word) coating.
Melissa the baking soda worked great on the glass after self cleaning. Cany you use baking soda on the over coating as well? The area around door doesn't come clean and the front of oven. So what can I use to clean it up a bit better. Thanks for the tip it worked beautifully.
One word of caution: do not use the self-cleaning feature if you have an under-counter oven and granite countertops. I actually broke my oven (a week before Thanksgiving) because it got too hot during the self-cleaning cycle (the repairman explained that the stone countertop held in the heat and caused the thermostat to blow).
Whirlpool self cleaning oven I don't have the owners manual..... where should I look for the model number on the appliance? I don't know where to find that either...... I know it sounds really silly but it's not my oven LOL
Great video - as a bird owner I particularly appreciated that you pointed out how important it is to keep pets away. Maybe now I'll get over that inexplicable fear of messing up my oven and actually get it all the way clean!
I got one of those scrapers for Christmas. I was like my mother really likes to throw away her money wth am I going to use this for? so far I have used it to scrape ice from car windows, gum from floor, paint from table top and now I can uses on thanksgiving food from oven! speaking of thanksgiving I almost self cleaned my turkey in my oven. this video really helped now I understand how that setting works. thanks
Melissa, many ppl are saying that the self cleaning program is ruining the stove and it won't work anymore having to replace it much faster. Actually happened to myself. After a self cleaning cycle my wall oven didn't work anymore and I had to buy a new onel. What's your opinion about this? Also I read somewhere that you cannot manually clean the ovens that have this feature but to only use the self cleaning program. Is it true?
You are so right I used to much water with baking soda and have a drip for life but good tip I’m trying to google how to self clean my oven but the info about racks was super useful.
Nice to see a review that doesn't spend the bulk of the time warning us not to do self-cleaning. If the feature were as perilous as some folks describe it, then I'd think GE would have been class-actioned into removing it.
Like your videos, very informative ,I am 80 years old 👵🏻 but I am not shy about learning new ,or better ideas on cleaning . Gotta stay up with the times or get left behind. 👍 👍👍👍 🌈👵🏻
Great and informative video. Thank you. I think im still scared to try this granit on one side and wood cabinets oven has a glass tops. All things that concern me. And then i read your first comment. Nope . Im not going to risk it.
Here it is!! I've been using the CMS website to search for the videos I knew I'd seen but then couldn't find again. But! This video is not listed on your website; was it just accidentally skipped over, or is there a reason (like the advice is invalid somehow....?) It pairs very nicely with the one about oven racks; would you possibly consider making a new version combining the two? Thanks for helping to make it so all these "daunting" tasks are now a useful life skill! ~A.P.
Just did my oven this morning. WHY!! Didn't I do this sooner, what was I scared of, so easy. I did leave the steal racks in and they came up great. But will take them out next time I do it. Thank you
A friend of mine just used Bar Keepers Friend to clean her self cleaning oven. Did she totally mess up her oven????? Glad I saw this video before I cleaned mine.
Shouldn’t have rented the apartment then, you think landlords are made of money. You saw the oven that was there and still decided to rent the place and as long as it works he shouldn’t have to replace it
If you *were* going to clean an oven by hand, what cleaners would you use? Would you recommend baking soda and dish soap? The oven is brand new and the oil splatter mess is new as well, I just want to get a handle on things before they get burnt on.
great video. I actually removed my oven door and unscrewed it apart, just so I could clean the window inside. It was a gross job... But, I can now see my food again - kids love that. As for the self cleaning oven... I am wondering, I heard you can put cast iron pans in the oven to shed off all the old stuff, so it will be like brand new. Do you know anything about this?
I keep the big bits off the bottom of my oven by using a non-stick oven liner across a rack on the lowest rack level which I never use anyway. It can withstand pretty high baking temps and is easy to remove and clean. If you had a major spill or blowup stuff would get past it but that hasn't been the case for me. The bottom of my oven still looks great. Obviously take it out before self-cleaning!
#AskMelissa @CleanMySpace Can you do a more recent self cleaning oven video. My oven smells like burnt yuck and cleaning my oven seems like a good stay home stay safe project. I have regular coil burners. Can you also show how to clean the pans under the coils? Thank you for all your informative and cleaning/decluttering/minimizing videos. Sending you a ghost hug (you can’t feel it, but it’s there) 😊
+Clean My Space I just bought a house and the oven was so scary!! I was tempted to throw it away. It's a old hot point from the late 70s but seems to work great! I used easy off last night and wiped most of it clean today. But now I am using the self clean feature, is this okay and safe to do?? I don't want to blow my house up. Thanks for the tips most informative video I got when searching this topic, going to open a windo now!!
What if you don't know if anyone else before you has scratched the pyrolytic surface? Would using the self-cleaning feature have a bad effect, or it just won't be as effective?
Great job Malissa! I couldn't find manual after 5-6 years and you answered alot of questions ,and even included a warning for pets You can't help it if your hot as a self cleaning oven so others get over it,this was better than seeing a service repairman !
thank you so much. the extra related info you provided is insightful and helpful. i'm going to use the self-clean feature of my oven soon. thanks for building my confidence to do this. cheers!
As a part of my rental agreement for my Apartment, my Landlord is responsible for replacing my freestanding range/oven if something is wrong with it and he cant fix it. Last week he brought me an older, used 30" Whirlpool WLP30800 range and it has a self cleaning function. My question is, my fridge is about a foot away from the oven (I have a small kitchen), would I still be ok to run the self cleaning cycle, or should I move the fridge further apart from the range?
Hi Melissa I'm a new subscriber. I was wondering if you can tell me the best way to clean my stove stop. I have a gas stove with a white top and I am so lazy to always clean and scrub it to get it back to its shiny white condition. Any suggestions? Thanks so much
Thanks or the tips. I was going to clean the oven this afternoon, But when you said it would take about 4 or more hours. I think I'll wait for in the morning cause it's 3pm now. But thanks for the info.
That's something that I have researched intensely. What I have learned is that you need to take the door apart and if you do it yourself, you'll void your warranty. So of course, they want you to call a service professional over to do it for you (for a cost$).
I saw a video where someone put a long ruler (maybe a yard stick) with paper towel in the vents between the glass in the doors. I hate the concept because I am afraid I will have the paper towel end up falling off in between the glass. I am thinking there needs to be an invention maybe similar to a ruler but with the cleaning material fastened on. Maybe a thin strip of cleaning cloth fastened to a long piece of cardboard. Or maybe velcroing it onto a thin ruler. Seems like some smart person should be able to figure out how to invent a gadget.
I am wondering if this product would clean between the glass on the oven - going in the vents at the top of the door. Self-cleaning ovens that use pyrolytic cleaning (heat) create a lot of smoke and odor. It’s also a feature notorious for malfunctioning. (Do search before trying it out!!)
Hi. Love your videos. I have 3 questions..... How do I clean the stone in my shower? What do I use to clean a really dirty white fiberglass shower tray? What do you use to clean and prevent soap scum on shower doors? Thanks so much!!
Thanks! You answered my question about why my oven periodically locks!! Unfortunately, I can't remove the racks and other things when that happens. :( Any suggestions to unlock it so I can do that?
It’s like your a Psychic. Lol you knew my name when looking up this feature on my oven. Thank you for the info. Much much appreciated. ❤️ Now off to clean the oven.
I have a question about the frame at the bottom of the oven door. Rust is forming along the top end of frame and over the years its been spreading. How can I fix that or what can I do to further prevent it from spreading?
I know I used the self-cleaning feature once (in 14 yrs!), but I can't remember if I hand--cleaned the inside of the oven between that time and now. What will happen to the film that manufacturer coats the inside of a self-cleaning oven if the oven has been damaged/partially removed before using the self-cleaning feature again?
So, I live in a rental and our self cleaning over definitely was not cleaned prior to us moving in. I've always been too nervous to try to use the self cleaning mode because there's such a build up of grime that I'm worried the oven will break or catch fire. I also didn't realize it was self cleaning at first, so I cleaned it out as best as I could with baking soda, dish soap, and lemon juice. Is it possible I wrecked the coating? How dirty is too dirty for a self cleaning oven? Thanks ^.^
The Video was really helpful, But I do have a question about the glass on oven door. what if there gunk between the double glass? How do you get that looking as good as the rest of the oven Again thanks ..Peace :)
Melissa is it easier better to clean the oven with the Self Clean, Steam Clean or myself to clean it please tell me cause I’ve got a bre and new Samsung oven and don’t know how to do that I thank you so much in advance
Initially I came here to learn how to clean my toaster oven but dam who thought watching a lady talk about cleaning an oven would be so satisfying.!!!!!!!! Amazing... Next video should bee about making pies!!!
So I after being terrified of my self cleaning oven for YEARS I finally turned it on. I watched your video while it was running to calm my nerves. Thanks for describing the stinky process as it's definitely helping me get through this 3 hour cycle! LOL
After I self cleaned my oven and wiped all debris with soft rag, the spots left behind wouldnt wipe clean. What do you do for the leftover stains. It cleaned for 3 hrs and wasn’t that bad to start off with. Thank you
Melissa, for your company do you use "green" products? I am just curious as to what you really use when cleaning for clients as you use a lot of DIY products on your youtube channel which I think is awesome too!
I cleaned the inside glass part of my stove door using your method, i.e. baking soda and water. Next morning.....SPARKLING!!! Love your tips, they all work. Also, you have a very cute and sweet personality.
Hey Melissa, I was wondering if you can do a video about mopping a tiled floor... Maybe something that smells good and adds a shine? I just came across your videos and I LOVE all of them. Thanks for your tips they are very helpful! Saludos from Encino CA.
Hey Kelly, maybe you found something to clean your tile and grout and maybe you haven't. It's been 8 years. Early this year I found something that works phenomenal. Funny. The name of the product is The Works. They make a toilet bowl cleaner that works very well on tile and grout. After all it's for porcelain. Lowe's sells them for like $5 for two bottles. I usually put them in a pump sprayer and spray the grout lines. Wait a few minutes after the fizzing stops. Go over the grout lines with a course cleaning brush (handled preferably.) Spray again and wait 5 minutes. Rents well with a mop and hot water. I've gotten some of the worst floors 80% cleaned. Remember to reseal the grout. I recommend a product from Lowe's called 511 spray on grout sealer. Spray the grout lines and wait 5 minutes. Wipe with a clean towel. I hope this helps even though it's 8 years later.
Here is a Tip: You can soak your oven racks in a plastic garbage bag with cascade, then you can just throw the bag away ! Better than soaking your dirty greasy racks in your Tub.
Doh! I should have watched this before I hit the self clean button .... left the racks in ( palm to forehead) but I'm glad you did mention what would happen if I left them in I don't feel so scared anymore
This may be a daft question but do you remove the inner glass from the door before putting the oven to self clean or leave it in for the duration of the process?
We just got a Fridgidaire Professional a couple months ago and it has that coating at the bottom. I'm not sure how this happened, but the bottom of the oven is already coated the grease. Not a lot, but enough that the it will smoke slightly even at 350. The sides are spotless, it's just the bottom. Are there any biodegradable cleaners that work or can I use the vinegar/baking soda remedy?
Can you please explain the ventilation part because mine does not go to the outside so is it still OK to use the self-cleaning feature if I open the windows which are in the living area across from the kitchen?? Also is it safe to leave your house and just let this process do its work without worrying about something going wrong?
I am utterly disgusted at some of these comments. You men need to act more like gentlemen (which are few and far between these days). You should be ashamed of yourselves. I know your mothers would be. Melissa - THANK YOU for posting this video. We are currently following your instructions on cleaning the dishwasher.
I didn’t know about the special coating in the self-cleaning oven. Good to know!
Confession time: I didnt even know I had a self cleaning oven till I watched your video and checked the manual! :-) Now I am officially in love. A) with my oven and B) most importantly with you! Thank you Melissa! :-)
Same! Just learning this today! And read the manual too.

Thank god. You’re the only one of several hundred I watched. Finally someone who made sense!!! Ty
SOOO TRUE
I have been afraid to clean my self-cleaning oven so thank you for this! How often should you clean it??
Fantastic video! I followed the instructions and tried this feature for the first time. It worked out awesome! Through your cleaning tips you helped me get over my fear of trying the self-clean option. Thanks Melissa! :)
Good info thanks. What about if I have clean it already with easy off ? Did I ruin the mentioned coat for self cleaning ? I have done it once 😞
Omg this video took my fear away of self cleaning my oven! I thought it was a scary process like it could blow up or something but I tried it and it's awesome! Thanks so much for such a amazing video!! love love your videos!
I too am afraid of using this feature
Amazing video - very informative! I am a home economics teacher and I haven't ever seen this explained so simply and clearly! Thank you!!! This would make a great teaching tool!!
Melissa you were like an oven 10yrs ago!! 🚬 🔥 How's your oven today?
Thank you so much! I did not know a lot of this, and now I feel prepared to use the self cleaning feature of my oven! I wish I had a self cleaning bathroom too!! :)
Thanks so much - that's so kind! We are doing a laundry series - have you seen our laundry video that came out last week?
Unfortunately had some foil burnt onto the bottom of my self-cleaning oven - I tried baking soda - that didn't work. So I turned on the self-clean feature - which I think permanently burned it into the oven base. Any ideas on how I can get this off? I'm glad I watched this as I've seen other videos using baking soda to clean the oven. I didn't realize the pyrolytic (thanks for the new word) coating.
Love the way she is explaining.. so relaxed and so beautiful
WOW I DID NOT KNOW A COUPLE OF FACTS. ESP THE COATING AND SMOKE FACTOR
I come back to this video 2-3 times a year. I wish I remembered 😂
Thank you I never thought about removing the racks!
Melissa the baking soda worked great on the glass after self cleaning. Cany you use baking soda on the over coating as well? The area around door doesn't come clean and the front of oven. So what can I use to clean it up a bit better. Thanks for the tip it worked beautifully.
Great job explaining the process. I now feel ready to clean my self-cleaning oven!
Have you tried Barkeeper's friend?
One word of caution: do not use the self-cleaning feature if you have an under-counter oven and granite countertops. I actually broke my oven (a week before Thanksgiving) because it got too hot during the self-cleaning cycle (the repairman explained that the stone countertop held in the heat and caused the thermostat to blow).
What is the brand of the oven you have?
Whoa. This comment should be pinned to the top 😲
Thank you so much.
Ouch! Thanks for sharing this tip!
Whirlpool self cleaning oven I don't have the owners manual..... where should I look for the model number on the appliance? I don't know where to find that either...... I know it sounds really silly but it's not my oven LOL
Self cleaning bathroom yes please :)
I have one Claire! I call her Granddaughter! She's golden!
Lol! Too true.
Unfortunately, it is apparent that self-cleaning still requires work :(

First time homeowner here. How often should you self-clean your oven? Once a month? Once a season? Whenever it looks dirty??
I can, but I think the best way to do it is with a steam cleaner...it's more work to clean it without chemicals (which is the only way I'd do it).
Great video - as a bird owner I particularly appreciated that you pointed out how important it is to keep pets away. Maybe now I'll get over that inexplicable fear of messing up my oven and actually get it all the way clean!
Very informative as a first time home buyer who was given a self clean oven. Thank you for making this video. Baking soda is the key.
I got one of those scrapers for Christmas. I was like my mother really likes to throw away her money wth am I going to use this for? so far I have used it to scrape ice from car windows, gum from floor, paint from table top and now I can uses on thanksgiving food from oven! speaking of thanksgiving I almost self cleaned my turkey in my oven. this video really helped now I understand how that setting works. thanks

so...pretty much the self clean feature turns your oven into an incinerator?
Pretty much
Yes, it turns everything into ash!
Great and informative video. Thank you. I think im still scared to try this granit on one side and wood cabinets oven has a glass tops. All things that concern me. And then i read your first comment. Nope . Im not going to risk it.

Should I do the oven "self-clean" during the winter when it's cooler instead of during the hot summer?
A friend of mine just used Bar Keepers Friend to clean her self cleaning oven. Did she totally mess up her oven?????
Glad I saw this video before I cleaned mine.
Great job on the video and so explanatory and informative.
Except when you rent & the oven is 20+ years old and your stuck with a mess andthe landlord refuses to replace.
you ain't lying 👍
Exactly.

Shouldn’t have rented the apartment then, you think landlords are made of money. You saw the oven that was there and still decided to rent the place and as long as it works he shouldn’t have to replace it

Helpful video, thumbs up. I only wish you would have shown how the oven looks "after" the oven cleaning cycle.

Thank you so much Melissa for these awesome tips. How can I clean between the glass door? I don't know how it got dirty in first place?🤪
Thank for the tutorial! I pressed the self clean but its not turning on? Please help. Thank you
I was admiring the rack in her video as well. Very well built piece of equipment.
Wonderful explanation! I would have liked to see more actual demonstration, though. Thanks a lot!
I have lost my manual. After I dial the self clean knob do I set the temperature dial to any degrees also ????
I have a question about the frame at the bottom of the oven door. Rust is forming along the top end of frame and over the years its been spreading. How can I fix that or what can I do to further prevent it from spreading?
Now another question. How to remove the forever dripmarks?
I have used Easy Off and a green rough scrubby brush in the past - can I still use the self clean option on the oven?

I also didn't realize it was self cleaning at first, so I cleaned it out as best as I could with baking soda, dish soap, and lemon juice. Is it possible I wrecked the coating? How dirty is too dirty for a self cleaning oven? Thanks ^.^
The Video was really helpful, But I do have a question about the glass on oven door.
what if there gunk between the double glass? How do you get that looking as good as the rest of the oven
Again thanks ..Peace :)
Really well put together video. Nicely done. Love it. Very helpful.
Thank you
Wow Melissa is so clean and gorgeous! Guaranteed she is married ! I forget what I came here for? Oh yes the stove! Thanks!! And merry Christmas!!
Hey Melissa,
I was wondering if you can do a video about mopping a tiled floor...
To much waste no thanks
Smart girl !!!
I’ll have to try this method next time for sure
Hello Melissa,
Do you use any product when using the self cleaning on the oven?
Doh! I should have watched this before I hit the self clean button .... left the racks in ( palm to forehead) but I'm glad you did mention what would happen if I left them in I don't feel so scared anymore
Nicole Swenson i did that too....they're not shiny anymore and don't slide as easily:(
This may be a daft question but do you remove the inner glass from the door before putting the oven to self clean or leave it in for the duration of the process?
We just got a Fridgidaire Professional a couple months ago and it has that coating at the bottom. I'm not sure how this happened, but the bottom of the oven is already coated the grease. Not a lot, but enough that the it will smoke slightly even at 350. The sides are spotless, it's just the bottom. Are there any biodegradable cleaners that work or can I use the vinegar/baking soda remedy?
"After 4 months?"
4 months? I'm here because I haven't cleaned it in 5 years. I don't know how to adult
So, is this a summer and spring cleaning time only?
Is there anything that can be done to clean the in between the 2 glass panes? Should I open the door?
Thank you so much! this really took away all my fears and my oven looks like new!
Can you please explain the ventilation part because mine does not go to the outside so is it still OK to use the self-cleaning feature if I open the windows which are in the living area across from the kitchen?? Also is it safe to leave your house and just let this process do its work without worrying about something going wrong?
Do you have any updates on how to clean an oven that has the horrible Aqualift system, that replaced the self cleaning option.
I am utterly disgusted at some of these comments. You men need to act more like gentlemen (which are few and far between these days). You should be ashamed of yourselves. I know your mothers would be. Melissa - THANK YOU for posting this video. We are currently following your instructions on cleaning the dishwasher.
I missed what happened. What was going on in the comments?
