In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to Mute by Native Construct, as requested by one of my RUclips commenters named Shane. I was blown away by their virtuosic playing but underwhelmed by the composition...still a great time, and I was pleased to hear my first song by this band.

If you wanna explain Native Construct's sound to rock/metal fans who haven't heard of the band you can say it's like a mixture of Dream Theater, Between The Buried And Me, Queen and Broadway musicals. I love them. The vocalist (Robert Edens), short haired guitarist (Myles Yang) and the bassist (Max Harchik), are the founders of the band and they all went to Berklee. The guitarist actually programmed all the drums for the album and only later for touring they found a drummer to actually play the songs live, etc. I get the feeling of being overwhelmed and like it's "too much" or "too many flavors", but at least for me it was an acquired taste (thanks Dream Theater for that). While I was delving into Dream Theater's discography I learned to accept that some music just require repeated listens before you can really "get it" and enjoy it. I remember listening to this song for the first time, I was overwhelmed as well, it does feel like it's too much, but after you listen to it enough times to memorize all the passages and changes, the weirdness vanishes (at least for me it does) and I can enjoy very much all the different flavors, perhaps even partly *because* of how diverse it can be in such a short period of time, it's just cool, cause it's just all stuff I like, the prog, the broadway-like vocal passages, the heavier stuff, everything, so it's just super fun to listen to. Sadly the band wasn't making a whole lot of money by simply being a band and they all started doind different stuff and eventually ended the group. The only album they released is a masterpiece though. It's a very crazy conceptual album about an individual who is a mute, and is driven by feelings of isolation and resentment to create an entire world for himself (Quiet World) and becomes a rather nasty tyrant (Sinister Silence) to that magical world, which in turn triggers a rebellion from people wanting freedom, and music, etc. It's all very loose and very weird, but the story is there, and the music is amazing through and through.

I do have to respectfully disagree with you on your comment that none of their ideas ever got grounded or had motifs developed. If u listen to the piece a bunch of times you'll notice there are several motifs that form the underlying melodic themes of the entire song. For starters, take the 4 bar theme introduced in measures 5-8 at the beginning. They play around with melodic, stylistic, rhythmic, and genre variations on this theme throughout the whole song. At times its blatantly recognizable such as when the vocal melody picks it up at the beginning of the "jazzy" section (and the not the only time the vocals used this theme), but other times u have to really listen carefully to how a certain instrument will take a snippet of it and place it within a different phrase. Because the stylistic choices can be very chaotic it can be overwhelming if u aren't familiar with the melodies, but once get the song stuck in your head or becomes much clearer how they are developing the piece and structuring it based on motif and variation rather than on more traditional pop verse chorus formats. These aren't necessarily things u would necessarily pick up on a first listen because theres so much going on, but I am sure you'll hear what I mean on repeat listens.

Yeah, I agree. There’s been few times where I’ve listened to something and at the end of it wasn’t sure how to feel about it but this song was definitely one of those times. But the more I listened to it the more I appreciated it. The whole album is really an accomplishment and it’s to bad they broke up.

I'll be honest, huge fan of prog metal, stuff like Haken and BTBAM, so I should love this. But I've listened to this album and this song dozens of times and I still come away from it having the same thoughts that Doug expressed here. I totally get what you're saying about certain themes and motifs that do come up throughout the track, but beyond that there are certain sections of the tune where the compositional structure suddenly goes on tangent after tangent at a rapid pace that doesn't allow rhythmic or melodic ideas to stick at all. I find a lot of things to like in their music, but it's a complaint I have with them that I don't have with a lot of bands they're most similar to.

@@sleepscience_ you have to factor in the story theyre trying to tell as well. no song is its own thing, really. I would compare it with Ayreon's The Theory of Everything where you kinda have to look at the album as one flowing whole piece just broken up in acts, closer to an opera

They didn't have a keyboardist. They actually played the backing track live on a laptop the few times I saw them live. I feel the album works better as a whole than listening to a single song (it's a concept album, the lyrics are actually pretty great through ought), but I understand your feelings on it. They wrote this while studying at the college so your assessment of a stew seems pretty spot on.
Unfortunately they broke up after that one album so we never really got to see a more focused and band oriented album (I believe the album was entirely written by the guitarist)

It’s a concept album. The opening theme is echoed multiple times in the song regardless of the style they go in, and it is again heard many times throughout the album, similar to the musical theme in Pink Floyd’s the wall. You hear that tune repeatedly through the entire album. Same with the main theme in mute here. It’s a hard song to take in out of context. I always want to recommend it, but it’s a monster of an album to digest and took me dozens of listens to “get it” as it were. But how do you recommend someone devote themselves to a concept album that is difficult to take in. You just kind of have to be intrigued enough to want to. It’s one of my top 10 favorite progressive metal albums ever released. Shame they were a one and done. I keep hoping one day they’ll surprise all of us prog nerds with a follow up. But they’ve all gone separate ways doing different things now

I’m sure you’ll see that this is a concept album. This is a great opener. It sets the stage for the rest of the story/musical ideas. There are snippets of the opening melody that appear in different ways throughout the album.
Your comments remind me of the saying “discipline grants freedom”. In many ways, they’ve been disciplined to learn their instruments, styles, etc. which has given them freedom in their musicality. Maybe too much freedom in this sense has led to a smorgasbord of ideas. It also reminds me of one of my favorite bands, The Contortionist- in the early days a Prog technical death metal. Their approach has been to explore “pop” constraints. Their reasoning is that without limits, it’s easy to become derailed. Limits actually allow for a different kind of creativity.
Native Construct are influenced (in this chaotic style) by a band called Between the Buried and me, one of the greatest prog metal groups out there. VERY ECLECTIC and genre shifts within their music...most jarring but somehow they always make it work. Lots of interesting musical ideas in their music.
    Thanks for checking them out!
    Peace. Chris

I don't know anything about musical theory, but I do listen to a lot of stuff. My experience with t his album is that it requires a lot of listens to become enjoyable. This is not unusual for metal, but this album was an extreme case. For the first ~5 or so spins, it sounded mostly like nothing. Only once I knew the music well enough to be familiar with every theme before it happened did I start to enjoy it.
But the payoff was great. If I listen to it now, it's just so much fun. And the album has a ridiculous amount of replayability because it's very complex but not at all emotionally taxing. However, I don't expect many people to spend several hours listening to music they don't like on a promise. I did it because the person who recommended it to me has pretty similar taste to myself.
By the way, this is a concept album, and the story is about as out there as the music. It's about a Mute guy, who is being rejected by the woman he likes and thus convinces himself that this is all because of his disability. He builds his own 'Quiet World' inside of his mind. Then, most of the album is about what happens inside of that quiet world, where the woman he likes and her boyfriend in the real world appear as characters. And to make it extra confusing, it's also told out-of-order (the story begins with track #4).

In a way not so different from seeing nightwish where even though Thomas is playing keys, 99% of what u hear orchestrally is just a backing track that was recorded in the studio and when nighteish plays live they just play over the top of the backing track with a click track to keep time.

You know its often times hard to get into bands like this. I think its fully understandable. I think Ive only heard about the band by name, and this is to say that Im not a fan at this point in time, but I know more than a couple of bands that give a hard to digest first impression, but end up being awesome. One should have more time and be able to put in more than one listen into it. The common tool of bands like this, however, is to add a section that serves as some sort of a release. There was a bit of it here and there, but probably not enough for you. A band like Deathspell Omega, comes to mind, as another example of a band, which tends to bombard you with something that seems like a total chaos, but then reward you with a breathtaking resolution, however as you keep listening to it more and more, you actually end up enjoying the "chaos" more and more. Sometimes even more that the release.
If you wish I could recommend some of their songs, but due to some stupid blog about their last album, some people think they are "a _bit_ to the right of the political spectrum" (Im using the euphemism to avoid any chance of youtube meddling with the visibility of your video). This idea is laughable to me, after reading the lyrics of the album. It is quite obvious they use a common tool of many metal lyricists, which is to speak from the position of a bad person, with a morbid curiousity, but its obvious they actually speaking against it. Many bands with an anti-war, or even vegan, message have lyrics about how bloodthirsty they are. DSO goes a bit deeper than usual though. So its up to you to choose.

Hello Doug -- an interesting choice. Two small notes: 1) Floor Jansen uploaded an interview yesterday with fellow soprano Simone Simons of Epica, in honor of International Women's Day, entitled "Floor Finds # 7: Simone Simons", at ruclips.net/video/yK0PtS9Rprk/видео.html. The theme of Floor's interview is: "How do you feel being, like myself, a woman in what is usually considered a man's world, of heavy metal?". Maybe something more for your political interests?? 2) Floor and Simone collaborated on a famous duet, called "Sancta Terra", available at ruclips.net/video/cx22Yuj2nzg/видео.html. This 2015 live performance was done with both a backing orchestra and choir. Note that they also collaborated in the same concert on a recital of the opera piece "Pergolesi׃ Stabat mater, for soprano & alto". You're probably familiar with that one. (There is a good rendition of it by Les Talens Lyriques done in 2016 at ruclips.net/video/FjJ02agjjdo/видео.html). The Floor & Simone version is much shorter at just 5min 24sec, you can find it here at: ruclips.net/video/QqdvFPBGN0c/видео.html.

May I suggest that you are rooted in the conventional side of modern music? Avant-garde is not. IMO you should account for that in your analysis. Freedom! The liberties these musicians allow themselves creatively speaking reminds me of Kurt Weil designing non-melodic lines in his compositions of the "German Expressionist and Post-Expressionist era". Breaking the rules and explore... It's a legitimate path. Unexpect was another metal band to wander in the uncharted plains.

The human abstract, black dahlia murder, haken, between the buried and me, leprous, sikth/periphery, animals as leaders… but I hear a lot of human abstract/ black dahlia murder/btbam/haken
    All influences I detect
They need to edit. That’s why I was really hoping to see another album from them because I see how much potential they have and like Coco Chanel said take one thing off before you leave the house in terms of an ensemble or outfit and I’ve always felt the same way about music they have just Too many things going on too many key changes and abstractions that take you away from that moment of release, whenever you get the completion of the arrangement, there’s not enough of a Throughline, whereas between the buried and me in there, song swim to the moon is all fairy desperate, but all very cohesive at the same time. These kind of compositions and arrangements are insanely hard to put together and this is their first album, and they were all very young, not trying to make excuses for them. They could all play me out of a job and I really enjoyed the last track and second track- mute was the single and I think it’s not a good opening song.
Think track 2 spark of archon would be a better opener after a minute thirty lead in.
Yeah they need to flesh out their ideas and slow down with the changes

Welcome to the world of postmodern metal! A classical comparison would be a composer like Alfred Schnittke, or in jazz someone like John Zorn. A film example would be Tarantino, a literary example is John Ashbery. Basic idea is that you mix a lot of disparate genres/styles without much attention put towards making it cohere. In postmodernism most of the enjoyment comes from the juxtaposition of radically different ideas. Some people enjoy the "surprise" it brings, while others dislike the incoherency. Like most avant-garde stuff, it's an acquired taste. I also think some artists do it better than others. Native Construct is a band I think has a lot of promise, but I'm not a huge fan (yet).

Nice reaction video. Looks like the band wanted to be chaotic. A bit like avantgarde bands like Captain Beefheart and his magic Band (with famous painter Don “van” Vliet) on vocals. The difference is that Beefheart was an brilliant onorthodox muscician/composer (even famous classical composer Ivan Stravinsky wanted to work with Don (Captain Beefheart) “van” Vliet and his childhood friend Frank Zappa. Beefheart painted his own album covers and his piantings are in the Museum of Modern Art (moma) and hé was an child prodigy with sculpting. Even cult singers like Tom Waits wanted to imitate the singing style of Beefheart and many bands and muscicians tried to copy the strange onorthodox rythems of the band/music.

I think you would enjoy Haken, and the Aristocrats more than this... ... Less manic and the music transitions are much more moving and natural.. less contrived. Haken are a British band who have had probably received as much critical acclaim as you could ever digest... Like Porcupine Tree and Steve Wilson. The most successful producer/artist in the UK that nobody has ever heard of!
