    In Hmong/Miao, Ma surname is pronounced as Moua or Mua. There is a large Hmong population in Southern China, Northern Vietnam, United States of Anerica, Laos, and Thailand. I’m sure the Hmong people will be interested in learning about the history to their surnames.

I did some researched on my own some time back, it seems it all started with 伍子胥. Many people in China seems to know 伍子胥 but not overseas Chinese. The association of Dragon boat festival to Qu Yuan versus 伍子胥. There are many interesting stories to 伍子胥 in Chinese Opera eg. Whipping of the corpse of King Chu Kingdom, in Japan folktale etc. The surname 吳 seems to be more "popularly" used instead of 伍. Pls continue to do you great work. 🥰

    Nice. I read in somewhere that when Admiral Zheng He went to Africa, he invited 3 Masai chiefs to visit China. 2 of them stayed behind and their descendants adopted the family name of "Ma". Not sure if this is true but Emperor Yingle did invite a lot of foreign dignitaries to stay in China and a lot of them stayed there for a long time or decided to stay for good..Cheers

    Oh surname origin story this one is so interesting👍🏻 I've never heard of 馬 surname in Korea(Ma Dongseok's real surname is Lee) I think Chinese surname is more various than Korean ones. My surname is 白. Not much common in Korea as Kim, Lee, Park. When I travelled Malaysia I saw they were selling keychains of each surname. I searched all around the country but I couldn't find mine😂🥲

    • @deadpool113
      @deadpool113 2 года назад +4

      And wow we also have clan books in here. It's so old and have enormous pages. And almost more than half is written in 漢文 or 國漢文混用(mixed script of korean(國文) and 漢字). So i can't even dare to read them lmao. It describes about the origin of surname, prominent ancestors' story, clan village, clan cemetary mountains and genealogy. We don't have diverse surname but not all Kims are same. There are Kimhae Kim clan, Gyeongju Kim clan, Naju Kim clan, Andong Kim clan... and each clan branches out into groups. And in there each people have their own generation number. like I'm 33rd descendant. And some family has the rule of putting particular letter to the name depends on the generation. Like every 32nd descendant of this clan's group should have Yeong*, 35th should have *Jae, blabla so complicated. Do chinese also have same custom and structure?🤔

      白 is ranked 73rd common surname in China. Celebrities with this surname include Tang dynasty poet 白居易 Yuan dynasty playwright 白朴 modern Taiwanese writer 白先勇. Some from ethnic minorities Muslims, Jews, Manchus, Mongols adopted this surname as well.

    • @deadpool113
      @deadpool113 2 года назад

      @@pslaw ah so China also has 白 surname but looks like the distribution differs by regions. And still common surnames can be found easier. Since I lived in here for my whole life I saw several people that has my surname but never heard from China. And yeah even there are, I wouldn't notice cuz the pronunciation is totally different😂

      @@deadpool113 Yes, China does have quite a lot of clan books. However, not all Chinese clan books are trustworthy. In particular, those from Far South China, places like Guangdong and Guangxi, were forged during the late Ming, Qing and Republican periods. The reason? Well, up until the early to mid Ming period, large swathes of lands in Far South China and Southwest China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, parts of Sichuan, etc.) were still controlled by hereditary native chieftains known as Tusi (土司). They were a bit similar to the Daimyo in Japan or the feudal lords in Europe in that they dominated their own chiefdoms but they also had the obligation to report to the Chinese emperor and had to support the empire's cause with their soldiers in case of war or rebellion. Much of the populace who lived in those Tusi-controlled chiefdoms were indigenous peoples of Southern China speaking Tai-Kradai, Hmong-Mien, and other Non-Chinese southern languages. However, due to the frequent rebellions in the south, the Ming and the later Qing Dynasty deemed these Tusi kingdoms to be rather unruly and were a hotbed for rebellions, so the central authority decided to send armies to destroy them and bring their lands and people under the control of the central court. In the process many natives were massacred, and those who subdued were forced to adopt Sinitic traditions and costumes, including adopting Sinitic surnames and forging their clan books to link themselves to the famous Sinitic clans. However, thanks to modern genetics, it has been proven that the Cantonese have a rather high frequency of native Tai-Kradai genome and only have minor genetic contributions from Northern Chinese, hence proving that their clan books are mostly forged and fake.

      @@weifan9533 thx for enlightening me. So that is the story of south china. Yet they claim to be the truest han chinese in the country. At least cantonese. I can see why Yunnan and Guangxi have many minorities. Han chinese has enormous population but looks like it's not just out of birthrate. They infec... merge others. History is repeated. Even it's an centuried history it reminds me of current chinese situation.
