I think Simon felt immense pressure to live up to Betty's sacrifice. She gave up everything for him, so Simon needed to use that second chance for something great. Being unhappy felt like an insult to Betty's memory, because then her sacrifice was for nothing. His new life was a gift and Simon felt like he wasted it.
That's why Simon jumps at the chance to become Ice King again, to give his "worthless" life a greater purpose: saving someone, like Betty saved him. But all Betty really wanted was for Simon to live as himself, that's all.

I completely agree! This is a great breakdown of the tragedy of their situation.

One thing I've really come around to since rewatching all of Fionna & Cake again is the decision to not make any of the characters that showed up in episode 2 return, I see that it would've defeated the point. Sure I would've loved to see Finn again, and Marceline and Princess Bubblegum, but the important thing was that Simon needed to start living for himself, not for other people, and that shot of him riding into the sunset alongside a bunch of dragons is the most striking to me with that mentality. It shows that he's free for the first time in his life after more than one thousand years.

I completely agree! He's allowed to do his own thing without being stuck to other people and, although people might view that as him abandoning them, in reality he's finding happiness on his own.

I'm on my way to doing that too. I know my friends can't always be there for me but as long as I have their support, encouragement and love. I can get through anything.

@@swarlockI really wanted a scene between Marceline and Simon. Sure this show is not about Marcy but come on, she's his adopted/surrogate daughter, we couldn't have at least 1 scene between them. (i know about the phone call scene but that doesn't count in my book)

Well said. It would have been nice to see Simon reunite with everyone after he decided to live for himself though

It’s not like he wanted to be the Ice King because he loved to be insane, just like it’s not like people wants to “Unliving” themselves because they love death.
That man is traumatized and alone (in a way you feel alone even if you have loved ones) and just wanted to escape from his pain, and his plan to become Ice King again was just the perfect opportunity to do it without looking himself selfish.
I also love how Fionna refuses in the end to let Simon to become Ice King again, both because she grappled at the “not so nice” implications for doing it to both him and her universe, but also as a way to apologize to him for being insensitive about it

Completely agree. I really loved how passionately Fionna was against him using the crown. It was a great sign if growth for her and made him realize that he mattered even to people that barely knew him.

I always like Simon as a character and Fiona and Cake gave me a bigger appreciation for his character and I'm glad his arc is has finally concluded with him finally being able to move on and just live his life. Also like how Simon never meant to put his needs and research over betty since he thought they were both on the same page. If he had a second chance he would have no doubt made sure he would have gave as much focus towards Betty needs as she to his.
Regardless Simon life is still of value even without the love of his life. He helped raised Marcline into a decent human being, as ice king save ooo with Fin and jake, despite what he thought initially his life did have value as much as anyone eles.
Simon now may not have special powers anymore, may not be as skilled as Fin,but Simon in his own way is a great person.
I do love the final scenes of him maintaining contact with Fiona, living his life day by day,and finally getting some well deserved Therapy. Overall I'm satisfy with the ending of Simon petrikov story.
If Adventure ends with Fiona and Cake I'm truly satisfied with it as a ending.

Have you considered doing a video about the symbolism behind Fiona and Cake’s universe being removed from Simon’s head and being given to them? I feel there’s a lot to be said about Simon giving them their own agency as a result of accepting his own agency

    • @Kev-D-OG
      @Kev-D-OG  Год назад +13

Definitely! I think that's it's hand in hand with him viewing them more as their own people as well instead of literally fanfic characters. Plus there's a lot to talk about with the way they grow as characters / people in the series.

Damn that scene with the black pit as he didn't see life worth living and later him choosing to live his life and be happy... It hit me hard and gave me hope that things will get better.

Totally. If we see more of Simon in the future (which we likely will) I'm excited to see what they do with his character.

i feel like simon so many times. i would say almost all the time. my best friend k herself and i have gone through stuff, but all i have wanted to do since i have memory of existing is helping other people. i just, felt so out of place? like i was worth nothing and would only be fullfilling my purpose if i sacrificed my well-being for others, and since my best friend is gone i have lived without grieving her, trying to live my life as something great because i am living for the both of us. i feel like i owe her, as if she was betty. but, well, i don't. i see myself in simon because of this. i've considered literally everything he has, and i am now starting to understand that i will live with my own kind of crown, my mental illness and my neurodivergence, and i don't have to see it as something bad. i love that you made this and they made fionna and cake. it has been so... inspiring to see that people like me can actually live how we want to, even if it's just a character in an animated series. thank you for your analysis and your compassion

I love Simon Petrikov. To the point I refuse to call him ice king the name he uses in delirium. He's a broken man cursed my magic who'd otherwise Is a good normal man.
My grandma has Alzheimers so I have a sorrowful relation to this man someone with no memory of his past or people he loves. Like my grandma who doesn't remember me

I think this video helped me get through what I was going through and make it click on what I was feeling for the longest time. I felt really connected to Simon in this series and feeling hopeless and isolated and parts of my life didn't matter if it didn't come in service of the other people in my life. I've been working on trying to put myself first more and living life for me and I like to believe that Simon is doing the same.
Thanks for putting this out ❤

Fiona in the end of this series represent freewill where they can be who they want and enjoy what they have. Not be dictated by others. I truly, absolutely, utterly and completely love and enjoy our freewill.
