    Have you considered a tree spader to get an idea what is going on in real world soil conditions? I am just curious if the roots do the same things in a more dense or compacted growing medium. I have seen roots following worm tunnels when I dig to start tile runs.

      That’s actually an interesting idea although it would take quite a while to wash and clean the roots. We have done lots of root digs in clay, silt loam and sandy soils and what we have learned is that although root mass tends to change, the root architecture remains consistent and the root mass differences between hybrids remains the same.
