  • Listen to OU Chancellor Dale Sky Jones recount the raid in her own words, describing the day as a perfect juxtaposition of federal prohibition's failure to meet the needs of communities.
Before dawn on April 2, 2012, dozens of federal agents simultaneously raided Oaksterdam's five legal, permitted businesses and the apartment of Richard Lee, Oaksterdam University founder and the state's most prominent advocate for the legalization and regulation of cannabis. Hundreds of citizens flooding the street, shutting down Broadway, shouting at DEA agents and Federal Marshals as they carried away all the legal cannabis, curricula, and resources.
In the middle of the raid, the morning suddenly got deadly as reports of an active shooter at Oikos University a few miles away, becoming the worst school shooting in Oakland's history to which Oakland Police were unable to respond fully. The affidavit triggering the raid (that forcibly retired Richard Lee) remains sealed, and the Obama Administration has never revealed the purpose of their investigation nor brought any charges.

Such a sad story that disappoints me to my core, that the United States Federal Government could do such a thing to hard working honest people that want nothing more than to help those that need it. This is both disappointing but not shocking. History will show that the American Government at times is it’s own biggest weakness and greatest downfall. Thankfully this tragedy couldn’t stop the wonderful people at Oaksterdam like Dale Sky Jones from helping, healing, and education. If the government really wanted the best for the American people this day would have never happened and this plant would not still be illegal. My love and prayers go out to those poor families who lost loved ones that day because the police had to protect the feds who have done more harm than good.

Wow! Having read so much about Dale Sky Jones, I had no idea this happened until this moment. Love to see how she's built her empire so tall since. Highest regards & godspeed!

I remember this so vividly...I'd just finished my internship the previous semester and was working in a growhouse in Oakland at the time. I'm now a Budtender in Oklahoma City, and send you my love and gratitude for all I learned from Oaksterdam. OU forever.
