Vintage Drill Press Restoration - Sydéric S115

  • A friend of my father, Pierre Petzl, gave me this old Sydéric S 115 drill press (Thank you Pierre!!) and I restored it. The process took me a long time because some parts were missing or broken, and also because it was very cold in the shop and the paint took a long time to dry.
The drill is a 130 kg industrial drill press. with 15 speeds from 110 to 6100 rpm. The motor is a 380V 3 phases 1/2 HP. The only part I had to buy was a CM1 1-16mm chuck.
It was also a lot of work and that's why this video is longer than the ones I usually post here. I started by taking it apart, cleaning all the parts, removing the rust and old grease, wirebrushing and buffing all the parts, than painting them, putting new grease on all the gears and putting the whole drill back together.
Then I made a new hige for the hood and a new handle. The old one was missing so it was the perfect occasion to work on the metal lathe and practice a bit more.
I hope you like the video.

Esthetically very pleasing, but... What about the insides? The motor did not need any overhauling? It's true that those things are probably so well made and sealed that they only require new brushes once in a blue moon!... That handle looks friggin' AWESOME!! Good job!!

Thank you very much. After I took it apart, I checked all the part and the motor off camera. Everything was in really good condition so it was good to be painted and put back together. The motor was actually brand new because the drill had been modified to run on air (that's the big green thing I took of at the beginning of the video). Thanks again for watching :)

This was likely an AC induction motor, which has no brushes. Only wear item would be the bearings and maybe a few contacts if it had a start capacitor and switch.
