Vintage Drill Press Restoration - Sydéric S115

- A friend of my father, Pierre Petzl, gave me this old Sydéric S 115 drill press (Thank you Pierre!!) and I restored it. The process took me a long time because some parts were missing or broken, and also because it was very cold in the shop and the paint took a long time to dry.
The drill is a 130 kg industrial drill press. with 15 speeds from 110 to 6100 rpm. The motor is a 380V 3 phases 1/2 HP. The only part I had to buy was a CM1 1-16mm chuck.
It was also a lot of work and that's why this video is longer than the ones I usually post here. I started by taking it apart, cleaning all the parts, removing the rust and old grease, wirebrushing and buffing all the parts, than painting them, putting new grease on all the gears and putting the whole drill back together.
Then I made a new hige for the hood and a new handle. The old one was missing so it was the perfect occasion to work on the metal lathe and practice a bit more.
I hope you like the video.

What a brilliant job. A new lease of life for the old drill press.
Thank you Derek. Yes, I hope so :)
I love old machines. I can lift my drill press with one hand, shows how well made yours is.
Indeed it is. 260 lbs/13kg, it's quite a beast :)
Very nice, you can tell that machine deserved the work you put into it. Looks like a quality tool
Phil Vandelay It is indeed. Thanks a lot for watching.
Great job. Nothing more rewarding than bringing back a piece of history on a old pillar drill. I'm restoring an old English metal lathe. Loved your restoration. And love the colour. Beautiful workmanship. I've subscribed 👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much Mark. That's very true. Old machine coming back to life is a great reward considering the time and efforts invested :) Thanks a lot for watching.
That golf ball handle is the cherry on top.
Thanks!
Incredible workmanship, know-how, dedication, etc, etc. The end result is amazing. Such a nice machine.
Thank you very much Jeff. I really appreciate it! It is indeed a very cool machine!
Great video. It is special to restore equipment for use by you and others for another 50 - 100 years of loving care.
Thank you Paul. Very true. Now it's ready for my grand children ;)
Felicitaciones !
Muchas gracias por su amabilidad :)
A top rate refurbishment done very well, that drill press will last for year's, definatley gets my thumbs up.
Thank you very much!
Incredible restoration. Never heard about Syderic machines, but they seem to be built like machines were built in the past. Solid and with eye for details.
Thank you very much. Syderic is a french brand of industrial machines. They are indeed built for life, solid and well thought. Thank you for your kind words.
That was an awesome refurbishing project. You did an amazing job. Glad you painted the "S" red too. Bravo sir, Bravo...
Thank you very much Gary. Glad you liked it :)
Beautiful resto,and beautifull machine.
Thank you very much!
Sir! You made a great job! Congratulations from Puerto Rico. 🇵🇷
Thank you very much Oscar. Cheers from France
Merci !!
That is a 3 thumbs up effort from me downunder! 👍👍👍🇦🇺
Thanks a lot Ian!! Cheers from France!
The Redsmith This is very timely for me, I have just bought a very old pedestal drill for Chisel morticing, that I plan on doing some restoration work! 👍

Excellent job, great to watch.
Thank you very much
I never would of thought of hand painting. Came out very good!
It's sometimes the quickest and easiest way. Thanks a lot!!😊
@@RedSmithLeatherwork Yes, less masking off other areas. Takes forever to do properly.
@@chasiu75 Exactly! And no need to spend an hour cleaning the paint gun😊
Great hand paint job, very nice
Thanks a lot Keith!
Very nice. I appreciate the video. It's nice to see how it is done the right way. Thanks.

Thank you very much. Glad you liked it. Thanks a lot for watching! :)
Wow, what a nice old, and heavy, piece of equipment. That ought to last a long time now. Good job.
Thanks a lot Jim. I think it's good for the next 20 years at least :)
Awesome!! You know you have a somewhat heavy drill when you need an engine hoist to lift it onto a table!!! Great old machine!
Thank you very much!! Very true ! :)
Beautiful drill press, nice restoration!
Crippleman Thank you very much. It is indeed a great tool!!
The Redsmith .. You are welcome! Right now i am restoring a 1978 IXION BT15 drill press. It is a fantastic built machine and it is made in Hamburg Germany. Have a nice day and kind regards from Holland!
I hope you'll have as much fun with your drill press than I had when I restored mine!! Cheers from France :)
The Redsmith .. A votre santé🥂
;)
damn fine job, glad to see you brushed the paint on, that should last another 40 years compared to spray canning it.
Thank you!! I prefer brushing the paint. Better control and it stay on longer😊 Thanks for watching!!
Éblouissant, magnifique, en un mot... Bravo.
Merci beaucoup !!
What a wonderful restoration Red!! I would’ve been scratching my head putting all that back together! Amazing work brother!!!👊😊😊
Thanks a lot my friend. I truly appreciate it. Putting it back together is not a problem when you filmed how you took it apart ;)
The Redsmith you’re very welcome and I I was totally thinking that it’s a good thing you have video evidence😄

Thank you very much Richard. Happy you liked it :)
Wow, that came out great! Outstanding job! Love the golf ball handles. I love seeing old tools restored. I am restoring a Jet wood lathe. Only about 10 years old, but was well used. I’m completely stripping it down and rebuilding it.
Thanks a lot Tom. Very cool. Don't forget to share your work. Restoring my lathe is also on my list ;)
Great job Red. I was expecting a red "R" and the "S" to be painted white. Looks like a great machine
Thanks a lot :) Yes, it would have been a cool thing, but I wanted to keep it as close as the original as possible. I will probably do that on the table though ;)
Brilliant job, well done - nice viewing and also giving me incentive and ideas, as i am a attempting the same challenge. Keep up the good work!!

Great job!! I’m restoring one myself same model it used to be my dads drill press from his old shop!! Hope it turns out as nice as yours!! Thanks for posting this video!!
Thanks a lot! Good luck with your restoration, I hope it will go well. It's a great machine! Be safe and thanks for watching!
Nice work
Thank you!!
this is a good drill machine
Indeed it is!
That's a hell of a drill...... awesome rebuild too....... I wonder if it's a viable hobby/parttime job sort of thing?? just for the reasons of bringing old but still great machines back to life.... that drill is probably better built than most of today's brand stuff
Thank you Matthew. I can be. A lot of people restore okd machine as a job, but a lot of equipment is needed and it's a niche market with high prices. But you're right, this drill is will last years before it needs even a small repair :)
Nice work buddy been waiting so long to see this and it was definitely worth the wait 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks a lot man. Yes, the editing of this one was a bit tricky. Sorry for the delay :D
Awesome job brother love it
Thanks a lot Wayne

Nice work it wont need another refurb for 50years!!
Thank you Barry :)
Wow Red! You've done such a brilliant job on this! Amazing
Thanks a lot Soph ! :)
Great job mate! Love how it turned out, it's making me want to restore mine now... although I don't think I could repaint it... it's got such a nice patina to it now!
Thanks a lot Steve. If yours has a nice patina, you should keep it as she is. I like patina :)
Nice job

Thanks a lot Edgar :)
That is a thing of beauty!
Thanks a lot Andy :)
Lovely drill, Great restoration! you my friend need a small wooden tapping hammer :)
Thank you very much! It's on my list ;)
nice paint job
Thanks
Esthetically very pleasing, but... What about the insides? The motor did not need any overhauling? It's true that those things are probably so well made and sealed that they only require new brushes once in a blue moon!... That handle looks friggin' AWESOME!! Good job!!
Thank you very much. After I took it apart, I checked all the part and the motor off camera. Everything was in really good condition so it was good to be painted and put back together. The motor was actually brand new because the drill had been modified to run on air (that's the big green thing I took of at the beginning of the video). Thanks again for watching :)
This was likely an AC induction motor, which has no brushes. Only wear item would be the bearings and maybe a few contacts if it had a start capacitor and switch.
