SHOWTIME Lakers Highlights

- An hour of Showtime fastbreaks. This team ran the Western Conference in the 1980's, and a big reason why was their devotion to playing in the open court. Everyone from Magic to Mike McGee would make a mad dash to the opposing team's basket as soon as the ball was secured.

Wow... Great stuff, thanks.
Wow, I didn't realize that you watched my videos. I really enjoy your work too.
Thanks, really appreciate it!
"Shot blocked by Kareem...picked up by Magic...over to Scott...back to Magic....over to Worthy...Slam dunk" It's music to my ears
RavennaAl Not to mention Chicky baby”s voice!
@@resold Chick = all-time greatest sports announcer..could listen to chick on the radio without the tv and it was 2x better than watching the game on tv with marv albert(or anyone else)
I just thought about something. What if Dr. J spent his prime with showtime. Imagine the dunks we would see on those fast breaks
One of my favs is the NBA ACTION is FANTASTIC where all five Laker players touched the ball on s fast break & Kareem (Captain) finished said break wit a power dunk.
@M soccer cures my insomnia.
I have never seen an NBA team who could do a fastbreak like the Legendary Showtime Lakers. They were so damn quick.
and what the average fan doesn't realize is most of those transition baskets start on the other end of the floor by playing great defense. showtime Lakers were always committed on the defensive end of the floor
This is why opposing teams started to retreat as soon as they took a shot. The lakers were the best at the fastbreak and so to shut it down, teams started putting less emphasis on the rebound, and making sure everyone was already retreated to cut off any fast break.
Even if you were not a basketball fan you could not help getting caught up in this style of play and just enjoying the ride.
What people failed to understand about the Lakers of the 80's was the stamina they possessed. They work extremely hard to be in tip-top shape.
And throw in Johnson's brain, it takes it to the next level.
We understood thank you
Nobody failed to realize that.
@@chriso8193 What most fail to realize is that nobody else has this kind of marathon stamina.
Absolutely. And no load management
what the average fan or media person doesn't realize, is just how good the showtime Lakers were defensively . most of those beautiful transition baskets were the result of a committed approach that started on the other end of the court. but remember, defense and rebounds wins championships. even for the showtime Lakers.
We realized just like u
magic was ridiculous, his passing was unlike anything we have seen even til this day
Jason kid was a super elite passer
Pistol Pete his teacher
Magic was unique and Kidd has his own style, but not nearly as successful. I have Magic 2nd behind MJ on my all-time list.
everytime i watch them it feels like this is how basketball was meant to be played.
The best basketball I've seen in 42 years of watching the NBA
You better believe it, brother!
Yessir and that includes the 1990's Bulls.
The Lakers and Celtics no doubt solidified the NBA to popularity
❤️ 1980s NBA basketball kareem abdul jabber ; hakeem olajuwon ; davud robinsin larry bird kevin low post mchale etc etc magic johnsin. Etc ; pat riley x&o guy
What made their game outstanding wasn't so much how they scored, it was how they passed and how unselfish they were.
and how committed they were on the defensive end of the floor. Showtime Lakers had a lot of flash, but it was their team defense that made them so dominant.
@@bconni2 you got that right!
It was Magic, the second greatest player to ever step on a court after MJ.
@@Nikkithedog-t6b Second greatest? No. Johnson is THE greatest.
For one, you don't see Jordan playing like this. Even if he scored more than anyone on the Lakers, his team, collectively doesn't. The 1991 fimals matchups notwithstanding, the peak Lakers would kill his Bulls.
The Laker greyhounds were a sight to behold. What was even funnier is watching out-of-shape teams give up by the third quarter while the Lakers looked fresh and composed.
Showtime was the best thing on TV in the 80's.
magic is the reason why i was a laker fan!!!!! fuck i miss the 80`s laker teams
@@davidconejr4206 ...I miss 80s basketball in general. The college game was great, esp. from '79 to '85. The NBA, with only 23 teams for most of the decade, was packed with talent. You could watch a late night game between the Pacers and Clippers and see good, pure basketball.
Magic Johnson was so unique.. He could score with the best of them when he had to, and he was a magnificent passer.
Not a single transition 3pter! Love it!
Amen.

yeah a modern day team would fuck this pace up so bad probably be a 30 point blow out easily by halftime
@@justabrothaonyoutube Interesting…..how do you know this?
The whole team should be in the hall of fame
Byron Scott, no. Cooper, no.
@Stephen Loflin he doesn’t mean the players individually he means the team itself as a whole
Like the 1960s boston celtics teams
@@stephenloflin4772 Bullshit....Scott has 3 and Cooper has 5. Yao Ming went to HOF and has NO ring. Iverson has no ring and went to HOF.
This was the best quality of NBA Basketball ever!!!!!!!
You better believe it, brother!
Agreed.
They're a couple of teams that were as good! I'll keep it my secret but Magic and the Lakers were all that! No arguments from me! Old school rules forever until shown otherwise! Old phones are better then iPhones hence gave birth to all phones being the parents and forever collect royalties! Showtime! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
The most beautiful basketball i've ever seen.
They were the masters of the fast break back in the day!!
The spacing on those breaks was a thing of beauty. Pat Riley was the architect.
Run & gun basketball ; track meet NBA basketball : run & shoot basketball.l.a laker 1980s
I absolutely miss these LA Lakers teams. The excitement surrounding them was tangible.
I lived in L.A. during that time. Yes, you could feel it.
The spacing on their fast breaks was a thing of beauty. Add to that the players involved and you have the best fast break that has ever been seen. It was perfection.
Watching a whole hour of this is like eating a wheelbarrow full of candy. Damn those guys were so smooth, the perfectly coordinated machine. Made the unbelievable look effortless. And so deep... even the guys off the bench were all famous. Kurt Rambis, baby! Superman!
Probably could make a few of these videos like this!
Wheelbarrow of pockycandy
Nothing better than watching some showtime lakers highlights with Chick Hearn calling them.
The NBA was so much fun to watch then Those Laker teams would sweep any team in the NBA now. It wouldn't even be close.
My dad loved watching Norm Nixon as a kid, but when Magic took over, he got mad. Now Magics' his favorite Laker of all time
Norm Nixon was a helluva player but he was a point guard. It's tough to have two master Chefs in the kitchen. The Lakers got better after Norm went to the Clippers (1 Chef).
Magic's handles 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The team that put the NBA on the map. O truly miss watching them
And Mr Schick Hearns broadcasting. Rip
Chick Hearn
*James Worthy is art in motion. Byron Scott to AC Green offensive sets on point. Late-70's/80's Lakers are the best thing that ever happened to basketball and if anyone's paying proper attention, possibly to humanity.*
The showtime lakers would run through the NBA teams today.
What hell no
At that pace, yea they would..
@@nickjones3860 bro the Celtics would lose but not get run on
Most definitely.
@@epicone1086 Kareem in his 30's gets up and down the court better than any center today. He finished some fast breaks. You do not see that from any big men today.
Riley worked this team HARD. And it showed. "Showtime" really helped the NBA become a household name.
He ran them up and down the court and they got the spacing right on breaks. It was un-defendable when done right.
Just to make sure you have your head in the right place or get in the right place Kareem magic Worthy Cooper all of them worked hard before they even met Pat Riley so just keep people in their place and you stay in your place cuz Riley was great but the players are always greater just get that straight okay? And if you have a problem with that genius look what happened to so-called great coaches after their great players left the team okay so think about what you say before you comment think harder do better thank you
Chicky Baby, Basketball and the Lakers miss you, but most of all, all of us who watched a basketball game on the radio. No one did it better
Notice how Showtime is always better when Chick is announcing. He's the special ingredient that made the recipe great.
80s Lakers had more showtime fast break points than every team in history combined
MAN UTD no.
@MAN UTD Dude what the heck does what you say have to do with this video?
@@diegobromfield he posts this crap everywhere on all basketball videos
@MSoccer is barely fun to play, let alone watch.
@M still living in mom's basement. ?
I think it was the Denver Nuggets coach who once said "They (the Lakers) were making fast break points off of our missed free throws" The 80's Lakers were simply awesome.
I remember watching basketball in the 80s and would get so hyped that I couldn't wait to go outside and play ball with all of the buddies in the neighborhood. Nothing like being a kid.
Yes Teddy! Before my parents bought me a basketball hoop, I would take a racquet ball and shoot it into our rain-gutter in our driveway like I was Bob McAdoo or I'd do a "statue-of-liberty" dunk into the rain-gutter like Big Game James! Long, never-ending summer days with all-the-time in the world with zero responsibilities, and always looking forward to the next Lakers game! Ahhh!!! Such wonderful memories Teddy! Thanks!!!
Who else remembers living in the L.A. area with the Lakers and Chick in the 70s and 80s? When networks broadcast Lakers games, we would turn down the TV volume and listen to Chick on . . . was it KHJ? Can't remember the station.
An often overlooked facet of this Laker era was their defense. Something the Laker team of 2019 has no conception of. Love the play-by-play of Chick Hearn, a sportscasting legend !!
2020 lakers had the best defense in the league lol
@@bigchungus7050 exactly lol
@@bigchungus7050 he meant Bron’s first year with the young bucks. You talking about bubble year
Damn!! Showtime is so good that I don't want to stop the video, and I am up to 22:00 into the video LOL
Did it ever occur to anyone that Magics unselfish play made Kareem into a fast break center - the only one.
Kareem had an unblockable hook shot. He was great before Magic.
No it didnt because the Celtics have had at least 2 exceptional HOFers at center who were BETTER on the fast break than Kareem was for most of the 80s-Parish ran the court and filled lanes as well as any big man ever has, and Bill Russell was the engine/sparkplug/GOAT trigger man of the games 1st fast break oriented offense/dynasty-not a shock to hear a you lying on social media tho Rich
The Lakers in the 80s were great. Magic Johnson just made them better. For me the best of all time. Remember it was showtime every single game. They gave you your money’s worth.
The peak Showtime years were 1984-1987. During this time, esp. 84-85, they were Showtime every night. After 1987, although they kept winning, they became "Slow-time." The whole league slowed down (thank the Pistons) and game became less aesthetically pleasing for the next 25 years (thank the Warriors).
Byron Scott had insane bounce
I miss this so much.
It was great hearing Chick in a lot of these clips.
The best ever at it, so good that they had a simulcast going with him and Stu.
This team is very fundamental and was too ahead of its time. The things they know what to do in certain situations is insane for the time they played in. They would be a threat to ANY team in any era. They were bigs with PG speed
Said it right.
'87 Lakers arguably the best team ever.
Showtime Lakers the greatest team I've ever seen
Run & shoot NBA basketball 1980s l.a.laker : track meet basketball l.a lakers 1980a
Showtime lakers was poetry in motion. Nothing like it
I fondly remember many of this. Magic was my favorite player , never miss a game on CBS , from 1980 until they lost the games to NBC
Agreed. Basketball got worse in the 1990s. At least, it was harder to watch. CBS and the 80's....those were the days!
Byron Scott and Joe Dumars are 2 of the most underrated shooting guards of all time!!!!
Scott had more range than Dumars, but Dumars could run the offense in half court sets better than Scott!
Thats why both won championships so how are they underrated??
I'm still a Die Hard Knicks Fan but I loved The Showtime Lakers
The youngsters who believe today’s players can run circles around the older players should watch this video. Can you imagine how easily the 1980s Lakers Showtime teams can beat today’s teams given that defenses these days don’t do lockdown defense nor full court presses like they used to.
this was the NBA I remembered.
The greatest nba team ever in in nba history
I was a huge Laker fan during those years, Reggie. Although I hated the Celtics, I would have like to see the '85 or '87 team play the '86 Celtics. That was a scary club.
I'm just reminiscing on those old gyms that were great for basketball. The Forum, Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland AND Phoenix, Seattle Coliseum, Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, San Diego Sports Arena, The Mecca in Milwaukee, Chicago Stadium, the Cap Centre in DC, The Spectrum in Philly, the Hemisfair Arena in San Antonio, and of course, the Boston Garden.
Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot absolutely I went to the old Capital Centre. It's a shopping mall now.
i do miss the pre naming right arenas era.
I miss The Forum. Every seat was great.
Now it’s the Creditential DW Southwest Air Bank (I made that up but you get the idea)
@@alvarez.l9422 plus the fact that the flippin clippers were only visitors there unlike the stapled center today.
JAMES WORTHY was a hell of a finisher underneath that basket. Wow! He Guaranteed you 2 points when he's runnin' and gunnin' for the layup and from top of the key/free throw line. He seemed to float in the air just like MJ. Fantastic athleticism. The Lakers of the 80's must have had two pairs of lungs. The fact that they kept this pace up for the entire game is beyond human. Superbly conditioned athletes i guess. They must have wore out their opponents.
i hated the Lakers back then, since i was an Ainge and Drexler fan.. but i do recognize their greatness today, and the effort that was put in to put this vid together.. SALUTE!
Imagine Drexler playing with Magic. I mean, Terry Porter was nice, but Drexler would have had more hang-gliding dunks and rings
What a great team, WHAT A GREAT TEAM
I’m so thankful to have grown up watching the best era of NBA basketball🏀
Thanks for sharing! As a fan of the 80s Celtics, these highlights bring back some bad memories, but Magic and his Lakers were just breathtaking on the break. Also makes you realize how farfetched the Lakers' current plans for reviving Showtime are; Ball et al are simply not in the same league when it comes to vision, talent and sheer skill. Lebron is Lebron of course, but he's not going to change his style of play at 34.
Look now, LeBron is now a buffed Magic and Davis is the new Kareem. All the role players fill their role perfectly. If it wasn't to this virus, Lakers would've won the chip automatically.
As of now, LeBron and Westbrook on transition giving Showtime flashbacks
@@sgt.krakatoa1093 Nah
@@HardHustler956 LeBron is more like Oscar than Magic. LeBron doesn't run down court with people on the wing, like Magic. The modern NBA plays the slow down, walk the ball up the court offense.
I can watch this video on an endless loop if I had the time.
I’m going to save this vid. I was a teen in the 80’s. Hard times but good times.
You said it music to my ears. Poetry in motion. There’s never been anything like it before or since. Perfect style for the perfect team in the perfect city. That’s basketball man👍
Definitely some of the most exciting style of basketball seen . I don’t remember a lot about the Showtime lakers being a kid in the midst of their hay day , but I love seeing these highlights to remind me . They were a good passing team in the half court as well as the legendary fast break .
This team underrated in history && James worthy underated
Most dominant and exciting break in the 1980s
The real "Showtime" era was 1979-80 to 1986-87. Although the Lakers would go on to win another championship (1987-88) and appear in two others (88-89 & 90-91), they morphed into "Slow-time." Guys got old. Guys retired and the NBA game got extremely rugged and ugly.
This is beautiful basketball
The execution of these fast breaks are the most impressive
This was like watching beautiful art
Showtime era I consider to be the highest level of basketball I've ever seen the Lakers play. 1971-'72 Lakers sort of foreshadowed it, but it wasn't until the turn of the 80s when it was finally brought into being thanks to then-coach Jack McKinney's playbook and owner Jerry Buss for "overuling" Jerry West when he took Magic Johnson No. 1 overall in that '79 Draft instead of Sidney Moncrief. The rest, as they say, is history!
:-)
Thats why winning time on HBO is the truth
Clearly Magic was pushing the team to this level.
You take Magic off this team and place him on any of the top teams in the West and THAT team is in the finals every year. He made all of his teammates materially better.
Chick Hearns was a powehouse when calling the games
No team, not even the Jordanaires of Chicago, nor the fabulous Warriors teams of the past wouldn't put a hurting on Showtime Lakers. When it comes to club teams, the Showtime Lakers teams were the Dream Team.
Is it just me,, how does he outrun every 1 on a fast break.. Just that alone,, he is the THAT GUY AT POUNT GUARD. DONT SAY HE 6'8",,, HIS WING GUYS KEPT UP WITH HIM,, HANDS DOWN, THERE HAS BEEN CAPABLE POINT GUARDS,,, BUT THIS GUY, IS SOMETHING ELSE... AND ALOT OF PLAYERS IN THE GAME,, ON NBA LEVEL,, UR A LEGEND IF U CHANGE THE GAME,, HE DID THAT.
thanks for this video! the showtime lakers were a great great team. so much camaraderie, support from each other, and the ball moved around a lot, no selfishness. teams like this are a thing of the past in the nba.
Great stuff thanks for posting. I always thought there would be a video produced of Showtime. I've never seen or heard of one. This is the next best thing or the thing ! Thank you. I'm not even a basketball fan and living in Los Angeles the 1980s you could not help it to get caught up in the thrill of the Lakers basketball, Showtime, The Fast Break what a place to be and be a fan.
just the constant push push push to the end of the court is something to behold. Good lanes and good options to dish.
SHOWTIME!!! need I say more great highlights thank you
Commentator: “it’s showwwwtime!”...if only it was like this today
If today's Lakers were here they would sweep the the entire play-offs.
Magic hot the ball, everybody run, this is the best team to watch.
Showtime in the 80s and Lakers ran the nba with 5 championships and 8 times in the finals
If not for the Celtics and Philly that one year they would have 8 rings.
@@stephenloflin4772 ...Yep. Jordan did not have a team on the level of the 80s Celtics or '83 Philly to go against. Thus, he has one more ring than Magic.
N having Kareem made it so legendary
These Laker Teams would *DESTROY* any teams today!
You will NEVER see basketball like that again
Back when the Forum was the main home arena for the Lakers, before the move to Staples Center and L.A. Live and before Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls came to dominate...it was all about this.
Each era has amazing stuff. One is not better than the other. However the focus this team had to play so selflessly is incredible.
I lived through this - Good Times!
Byron Scott was underrated
He was underrated. But every guy on that team was made significantly better by the presence of Earvin Johnson.
Very!
This vid is a vid of a lot of masterpieces
Did you see the passes Magic was doing in this vid? The GOAT of NBA point guards, yo! No question!
This is the basketball I miss!?
Giants among mere mortals!
I don't visit enough. I watched damn near every Lakers game in the 80's. We also had Prime Ticket in CA. watched every home game on tv in 87-88. Watched the 1980 finial Magic MVP. the 83 sixers title and so much more. The Dr J behind the backboard. The Magic running hook. The Jordan 63 between the legs jumper...... on and on and on
1986-1987 Lakers is the best single NBA team of all time, recency bias notwithstanding. Why isn't Byron Scott in the HOF? And Magic is the most creative passer in league history, and had the players to do it to near-perfection. Lakers Nation!
I lean towards the Lakers teams of the early 80s … faster and deeper, IMO.
If you ask me Byron Scott should've had more All Star Selections,He was easily one of the best two guards in the league
He's definitely one of the best players to never make an allstar team. Should've been in 88 and 89, but most definitely in 88.
the golden era of fast break basketball... and is now coming back to the league! with better 3 point shots!
Lonzo Ball would've been amazing on those Showtime teams.
Lol
All Star Team ❤!! Thank you!! Mic'2023 😊!!
Showtime was poetry in motion 🔥🔥🔥👈
That Magic bounce pass is a thing of beauty.
Born and raised in Los Angeles. I was a Lakers fan since my teenage years. In the 80's I was so lucky to have seen the Lakers on tv (KHJ channel 9). And of course listen to the great Chick Hears.
The key for the opponents should have been: Don't let Magic get the ball.
The 80s Lakers are my favorite all time NBA team, among the greatest ever.
Don’t sleep on 2:00 clip, two bounce passes to get up court and a dunk, incredible.
In my opinion best team in History.
80’s basketball was the greatest! Showtime Lakers were the best team in that decade! ☮️🖖🏽
I could watch this all day! 💛💜💛💜
Lakers fucking played at a furious pace. U could make a great play and 3 seconds later they were at the other end laying the ball in.. they just demoralized every team.. pistons n Celtics were the only teams I ever saw no be broken by it mentally . maybe the 83 Sixers but that was a year b4 I started watching so idk about them
Looking back, the only teams I saw that could at least "hang" with the Showtime Lakers in their prime and give 'em trouble were: Sixers, Celtics, Bucks, and Pistons. 83 Sixers were the best team of that bunch to beat them for the NBA title, probably the best individual 80s team ever. Not a single weakness at either end for that special Philly squad that season and would've swept the entire postseason if not for the Bucks (that team was also title-worthy as well, in any other year that is). What an era to play in, superteams GALORE...
