Never played AA. Where would I get started? are the animes ok as a subsitute? I don't have a DS so I'll just read the script on LP archive. ALso is this series good for someone who hasn't played much games? I have a friend who wants some game recs that aren't shooters since his knowledge of games aren't that high.
The anime is pretty decent, but the games are better. The original trilogy of games have been remastered into HD for modern platforms, so you should check that out if you want. (Although I still prefer the original DS versions… I find the HD remaster kinda ugly.) Ace Attorney is a visual novel series, so it’s really just reading a book on a screen with occasional dialogue prompts. So if you and your friend like reading, you’ll surely like these games!
Might be late to the party. Visual novels are great for casual gamers who want a solid story over complex gameplay. If your friend doesn't like the repetitive use of a few buttons, then I think he'll have to pass. If you're gonna start AA nonetheless, I suggest playing the games in order of release with an exception. That'd be Phoenix Wright: AA Trilogy -> Apollo Justice: AA -> AAI: Miles Edgeworth -> Professor Layton vs. PW:AA (optional, noncanon crossover but is still enjoyable) After that, play the 2 remaining Apollo Justice games consecutively (Dual Destines - 2013; Spirit of Justice - 2016) and then The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (Adventures - 2015; Resolve - 2017). This is because TGAAC has a very compact storyline that you'd want to complete without interruption. Plus, you'd see the evolution of AA graphics with this order.
