honestly you should bring Craig and Matt in on this. doesn't seem like they're doing anything with DPC anymore, I know Craig said he joined a cover band, and there's nothing wrong with that, I'm assuming he wants to maintain his guitar work but doesn't want something that involves touring, and I think he's really more of a creative at heart and this is the sort of thing he really likes... remember when he did the whole month of "write a song each day" to get better at songwriting? I'm not sure what Matt's doing these days since he stopped making things for The Good Stuff, but I loved his writing for DPC, and I think it would be a shame if he never wrote anything again.
It's so, so fun! Also hearing you guys go through the process as ever is excellent. It gave me a crazy thought; One of you write song lyrics, the other compose song music. Meet the two in the middle and try to find a way to get them to both fit in the middle, build a song entirely out of two artist's compromises. Heck, maybe even revengeance it and swap places, the other write, the other muse afterwards and see if the experience from the first change your approaches.
Challenge Idea: put music to already written lyrics! I've noticed that lyrics seemingly always come last - would be interesting to see how you guys extract emotion and energy from lyrics and translate this into music.
I know it's not your main instrument, but I always like what you do with the bass Andrew. The lines are super effective, never too plain, never too busy, just what's needed and where it's needed. Very tasty! And once again, what a track! l'll never tire of seeing the creativity and spontaneity you two share! 🔥
This song came out so good. I think that this show is a testament to the fact that songwriting is a skill that gets better with consistent practice. It reminds me of a quote by Tchaikovsky where he says (paraphrased), "I sit at the piano at 9am every day, and the Muses have learned to be on time".
I don't think that was part of the Beatles lore. certainly other bands that probably also recorded at Abbey road... there were the rumors about Boy George for example
This is probably my favourite Sonic Boom yet with the back and forth and banger song. I also really appreciate how well made it is in terms of editing and captions, great job of the entire team! And of course the house band, how dare you betray poor Red like that 😮
I love how flexible these lyrics can be, they could be for addiction, getting over negative self talk, or a relationship. This song is lovely, thank you
tremolo means to keep playing the note. hence tremolo picking (playing one note over and over really fast). theres tremolo in strings where they move their bow up and down really fast. tremolo in winds where they flutter tongue, giving it that distorted sound. and tremolo in percussion where they roll on the instrument
I literally just love this show so so so much!!! You guys are so creative and animated and the energy you guys bring to your songs is just another reason to get out of bed in the morning for me. Thank you for everything you do!
My favourite thing about the Jazzmaster whammy design is that it can bend up as well as down, in a way that sounds different from doing it on the fretboard (especially with chords). Fantastic intro, been wanting to put Tele style knobs on my JM for yeeears but this makes me want it even more!
I think this is the best song out of this entire series. Not that the other ones haven't been interesting and fun but this was incredible and that build-up at the end was so intense it gave me chills.
This song channels a relationship I had with a person who struggled with addiction. I cared a lot for this person but over time I realized I was chipping away at myself trying to save them and our relationship. I had to reluctantly break free. The end is much like any conversation we had about the subject that would inevitably end in a screaming match.
I love this series so much. Sometimes it's like you guys take all the stuff in my head and put it into a fitting theme song based on my current feelings.
Damn do I love watching the two of you create music together. You both have such added value to each other, the both of you become such a creative powerhouse! Also just in all of sonic boom & first of october in general. BTW Andrew I want to say your IDM album Labyrinth is amongst one of the great IDM albums out there imo, to me it exists in the same space as Aphex twin, venetian snares, ... and such, but still with its own uniqueness. It has even assisted me in a few trips and damn was it an experience. Thank you for creating that album man its such a gem, it gives me the feelings I look for in music but rarely find. Always hyped for a new sonic boom creation!
I appreciate that you guys explain simple concepts like whammy bars and vibrato. It seems basic to most of us, but somewhere out there is a person who is learning about it for the first time. ❤
Holy shit dudes. So... I'm not going to get super into it, but basically I just found out that a girl I've been in love with for a long time has been leading me on and... Well, this song is basically every emotion I've had over the last two weeks. I mean, obviously I'm biased, but I think this is some of your best work as artists. Real emotion put to music. I would really love to hear you guys kinda revisit your best tracks and make a real album out of them.
Spent about a year trying to get my ex to love me and i thought she did... but she made out we were never more than friends... we spent soo much time together doing ya know couple things. Yeah shes 16 years older than me I don't care but she just didn't fall for me and it hurts so much. Makes no sense..... ahhh women.
yeah it's so good that they're able to channel these emotions and apply them to situations that don't exist for them personally. I think bands that are unable to do that are the ones where you get the "one hit wonders" they're only able to write about things that actually affect them personally, and then when they're successful, suddenly they don't have anything to write about anymore.
@@TheBanana93 that moment when I realized that I was the only person keeping things together, and the only reason it was working what was because it was convenient for her to let me keep doing it.
@@better.better That's really a fantastic point. As a producer myself who would really like to get into songwriting, I've mostly considered writing about my own experiences, but... I might try to get in the habit of trying to write about things that I relate to but haven't necessarily experienced. Thank you for this perspective!
This song is such a banger. It's got some My Bloody Valentine meets The Smiths vibes but like way more animated than either of them ever got by the end. I love it.
When Rob and I work together we prioritize fun, friendship, and RUclips. We have pretty big discographies of our own solo stuff with grand artistic visions that we’ve toiled over if you’re interested :)
2:25 swedish metal band Avatar does this a whole lot. Paired with downtuning to B standard it makes them sound really heavy. One track I can recommmend is "Hail the Apocalypse"
@@andrewhuang Also true that bending chords aren't really doable, but many double stops are possible, and like a duophonic synth, two notes can give you a sense of chords. But in terms of single and two note phrases, listen to Garrett Amos on _Midnight at the Oasis_ it may broaden your horizons on bending sans a whammy bar. Thanks for the response. And btw, I'm really loving when you make original music on the fly. Very musical. Very inspiring. .
There is a suggestion that the "whammy" bar was called that because of Lonnie Mack and their "The Wham of That Memphis Man!", according to Gibson (via Wikipedia).
Banger ending. I kind of just wanted it to devolve into noise completely, or for something to explode haha it's the kind of song you close your set with and just smash guitars or something
Brilliant song! I want to hear a guitar solo (with lots of whammy ofc) for the last minute of the song and the line "I'm not bound to you" in succession for the last few lines.
Andrew, I highly recommend checking out My Bloody Valentine. Kevin Shields basically invented the "hold the Jazzmaster whammy bar while playing chords" thing; he refers to it as "glide guitar" and it gives this ethereal tape like warble to their music.

It'd be cool to see them doing this with AI generated lyrics
Amazing idea!

I love how the video starts so mellow, & by the end they're jumping around & yelling. It matches how the song builds perfectly
This song came out so good. I think that this show is a testament to the fact that songwriting is a skill that gets better with consistent practice. It reminds me of a quote by Tchaikovsky where he says (paraphrased), "I sit at the piano at 9am every day, and the Muses have learned to be on time".
Man Sonic Boom brings me so much joy, and this is definitely one of my favorite episodes so far
Robs singing has improved so much. I love that for him
Guys guys guys hear me out: We can actually see Andrew and Rob stick to each other in front of us if we start a Sonic Boom live performance
Yesss!!!
What do you mean "if we start a Sonic Boom live performance" - they will be live in Zurich on the 5th of March!
fuck yes
all jokes aside a live performance would be sick as hell
I NEED Love Klutz live
I guess recording an album at Abbey Road wasn't Beatles enough for these guys, they've gotta start playing with each others whammy bars too now
I don't think that was part of the Beatles lore. certainly other bands that probably also recorded at Abbey road... there were the rumors about Boy George for example
Really love the storytelling from the editor. Revealing little bits of the song at a time rather than in chunks. Awesome song, guys
This show is what youtube should be about, keep on rockin' in the free world guys
Holy crap guys. Killer track!! Your creative process looks so fun.
This is probably my favourite Sonic Boom yet with the back and forth and banger song. I also really appreciate how well made it is in terms of editing and captions, great job of the entire team! And of course the house band, how dare you betray poor Red like that 😮
rob playing only the whammy bar on the intro of the final song is awesome!
The final song is such a bop 🤘🤘🤘
that buildup is insane.
Every single time, I wonder how the hell these guys are going to make something of these ideas. And every time … they nail it.
That build up at the end was AMAZING.
I love how flexible these lyrics can be, they could be for addiction, getting over negative self talk, or a relationship. This song is lovely, thank you
2:40 Andrew manages to play My Bloody Valentine by way of Spongebob.
I was very offended when Rob made fun of glide strumming 😂 I was briefly very excited for a shoegaze track
i was yelling at my screen MENTION KEVIN SHIELDS
They are just too good lol, not even 5 mins and they have a sick verse and Chorus.

Yess Ive been rewatching Sonic Boom a lot lately, its a comfort show for me so this is very welcome
The fact the drumsticks weren't replaced by whammy bars is a bit of a missed opportunity 😄
Has to be the hottest Telecaster ive seen
I think this is the best song out of this entire series. Not that the other ones haven't been interesting and fun but this was incredible and that build-up at the end was so intense it gave me chills.
Good to see Rob has more confidence to also sing on a song! It's a banger guys

they're gonna fuck around and accidentally end up with a top 40 hit song someday.
Holy hell, Rob. Those high notes are amazing! We need more of that!
Oh my... This is an absolute banger. Thank you so much, guys!

holy moly your voice is so amazing andrew
That idea to really let the ending section build and build and build and build and build payed off so well - oh my goodness! :D
So this went from Rob whamming Andrew to "maybe that's all I want, maybe that's all I need"
Damn red had a rly tough episode here. Heart goes out to you man.
Genuinely the best song you guys have ever done!
What a great song, I love the last part... The sad pop rock "First of October" style is my favorite.
This song is such a banger. It's got some My Bloody Valentine meets The Smiths vibes but like way more animated than either of them ever got by the end. I love it.
I didn’t see this was up for 38 minutes!!! I’m ticked!!! You guys are my faves!!!

This would go so well as an opener to a screamo album, and the build at the end could cut to the next song with the full energy of the album
This song is giving First of October vibes
songwriting with a whammy bar is just my bloody valintine
Hahahaha the intro 😂
imagine if I had my glasses off lol
Sonic Boom is like what if we could have the magic of First of October more than once a year? 🤩
I love the way you two combine, Rob's midwest emo tendencies shine through on this but this still feels like its own unique thing.
2:25 swedish metal band Avatar does this a whole lot. Paired with downtuning to B standard it makes them sound really heavy. One track I can recommmend is "Hail the Apocalypse"
"lemme just move over here..."
okay problem solved, and i think the guitar is LOVING it.
You guys keep making these bangers. When’s the tour?
What a banger. You could have sold some singles in the 80's with this one!
One guitar player that I love that uses a LOT OF Whammy Pedal is Synyster Gates.
I'm pretty sure you have the option of bending down on a single string, just start your note already bent up.
True but not possible with many types of phrases, or any chords

I love Rob’s singing on this track!
Its also fun, because the song is also how Rob is no longer bound to frets. Perfect.
What a jam! I love the building

in the studio, straight up whamming it, and by "it" I mean... well, let's just say... my baar
