Hey, what's the best way to get into TNR? Are there traps you can buy yourself to do it or do you need to find a local organization?

    • @CommanderWiggins
      @CommanderWiggins 6 лет назад +449

Usually a local shelter or rescue organization will be the best place to start, as they already have programs in place which will make things easier.

    • @KittenLady
      @KittenLady  6 лет назад +1385

I'd recommend hopping on google and seeing if anyone in your area already has a TNR program you can participate in. If they don't, you can still do it -- you just need to get traps and find a vet who will help. If you scroll to the end of the video, I put up two videos on the end screen that will help you learn more.

You can purchase traps; I purchased mine at “tractor supply” for about $30. Most areas have low or no cost spay clinics for community cats; check with the local city run shelter and they should be able to point you in the right direction :)

Researching local shelters and following them on social media, i.e. facebook is a good way to be updated on ways to help including tnr. In my experience I've seen quite a few shelters reach out this way.

there are plenty of animals to whom we do not extend love, empathy, and compassion thou. Many of whom need/deserve it much more, both in terms of how desperate they need help, and in terms of their importance to the environment.
Caring for animals can be admirable, and there's nothing wrong with working with certain animals because of passion. However cats are not a native species in NA nor are they endangered or even threatened in any way. We let many native species die and fail/are failing to save many more from extinction, yet we spend a disproportional amount of resources rescuing cats.
Cat rescue is all about cuteness. That's ok, but please don't lie to yourselves.

I found this video, as I was sitting here, crying over my little Reggie. Reggie was found in a yard, with his placenta still attached, and no momma in site. I took him on, to do whatever I could to save him. At 80 grams, I knew it was just about hopeless. I trudged on, feeding, grooming, warming and mostly praying. We made it together for three days, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Reggie passed, in my home, warm and loved. He is now resting underneath my lilac, where he will be remembered, and will always hold a special place in my heart. I will continue to rescue and foster, in Reggies memory. Maybe next time, I will have a victory. Godspeed Reggie.

Maybe you can contact a local TNR group. Have them help the cats in the neighborhood where your baby was found. Preventing any other kittens from suffering that fate would be a great way to honor his life.
I'm sorry for your loss. You are right that at least he was with someone that cared and did their best for him. That would be a more peaceful passing than cold and alone on the street. Thank you for being there for him.

I wanted him to live a great life and see the world but that was not possible. I found it abandoned in a parking lot with his siblings out in the cold. They all were 2-3 weeks but he looked about one week old 💔 I too, fed it, made sure he was warm and taken care of, most importantly I gave it my entire love. My poor angel is resting in heaven now 👼🏻🙏🏼❤️😭 I am left broken but I did what I could 🥹

I think cats get looked-over a lot. If a dog is running around outside, people are a lot more likely to think that the dog needs to be caught, taken care of, spayed or neutered...but with cats, a lot of people think that they're outside animals anyways and don't need to be taken care of. It's unfortunate :/

      @PrettyH8Mach1n3 6 лет назад +331

@@snug_as_a_bug its not the same. Dogs and small children are typically supervised. Older children are expected to have the intellectual capacity to make rational decisions, and parents can get in trouble for neglectful behavior if they get hurt. Dogs might be let out in protected, enclosed areas, but outside of that they are expected to have leashes. If they escape, they are tracked down with fervor and caught. This is not so with cats which are often left unsupervised, not relegated to an enclosed area and allowed to get hurt or that are allowed to hurt other things. They don't have the capacity to consider if what they're doing is right or wrong and dont make the best judgements of what is safe. A counter would be "do you allow your children to play in potentially dangerous places unsupervised?"Appeals to things like freedom should only hold so much weight when there are other factors.

I told her about the poor thing and we took him to the vet, who told us it was a fracture. They took him off of us and told us they’d do everything in their power to help him. My relative and her boyfriend had to hand feed two of the kittens at first because the mom was so in shock and didn't know what she was doing, she had dragged the kittens around by their umbilical cords and may have killed them. In my experience, if a cat births just 1 (or in this case 2) small kitten & then just walks away from it, it’s because she’s pregnant with too many kittens to carry to full term safely. A cat of mine gave birth to 1 premature kitten on the sidewalk outside our house & walked away. She remained pregnant & gave birth to a large litter 2 weeks later. At that time I’d managed to keep Fergus alive, so I rubbed the blood & muck from her birthing nest all over him & waited to see what would happen. She washed him like all the others & he even latched on to her nipple to feed! I was only 13 & I thought my job was done & he’d be fine. Unfortunately he died several days later from malnutrition because I didn’t notice she wasn’t feeding him anymore until it was too late... I LOVED that kitten & I want to cry just telling the story. It isn’t the only time I’ve seen a cat do it but if that’s what happened this time, it IS the first time I’ve seen a cat “selectively abort” 2 kittens.
Edit: I’ll have to donate to something because my own poor health won’t allow me to TNR or volunteer & my cat’s health won’t allow me to foster

There's a lady where I lived that would take and hide the cages that people put out to catch the feral cats. She said it was not right to catch and spay/neuter the cats. It was horrible. I rescued one of the little guys. He lived for almost a year but had some birth defects. He had the best year possible. All animals should be spayed and neutered. I have now rescued 3 kittens and 3 pups. I will continue doing what I can with the available resources I have. It's not munch but a $2 bag of animal food is better that watching one starve.

I had to round up a feral colony that a hoarder had abandoned none were fixed and community had been feeding these hundreds of cats a bag a day poured onto the ground. The property owner threatened to shoot every cat if they weren't removed. Me and many wonderful people took all the cats in and I have a wonderful kitty Charlie Alpha Tango, he's one of my soulmates and he is a wonderful emotional support animal now. We found so many dead kittens all over the property, newborns under everything that didn't make it. It's sad and hard but now those hundreds of cats have forever homes and lives and they're all fixed and happy.

    This brought me to tears's..
When I was only 12 year's old my family owned a bar, Outside the bar beside the dumpster the cook found 2 baby kittens not even a couple hour's old, I was there (It was around noon but night time) I seen them and I wanted to help them I had no idea what to do but I new they would be in better care with me. I toke them home I named them Rocky and Junior. I did everything you see here kept them warm feed them every couple hours had a ever close eye on them...Rocky was a lot smaller and had a hard time eating while junior was bigger and was taking the food a lot easier I was scared for Rocky and Junior but more so Rocky all I wanted was for him to make it through the night. I didn't even sleep much but when finally (I slept for 2 hour's) I woke up and rocky did not make it.. it broke my heart I felt I didn't do enough I tried so hard. Junior made it he became strong and full of life for his little brother who didn't make it. To this day I think of rocky and wish he made it BUT how I have to think about it is I did give him love before he left.
Now I foster kittens and it is the most amazing feeling in the world it is not easy but WORTH IT getting these little fur baby's ready for there forever home is a blessing and I know little rocky is happy with me. I strongly encourage people to rescue or adopt a kitten or adult cat everyone needs a loving home.
FYI-The mother was never seen after the kittens were born even after I toke them with me.

I'm currently taking a break from fostering at the moment though, I jave my own cat to care for at the moment and have a lot of travel expenses this year. The youtube algorithm doesn't actually think of it as "likes = good video, dislikes = bad video", it just looks at it as "engagement = spread video". That's why you shouldn't dislike, for example, dangerous "life hack" videos, because a million people disliking it is exactly the same to the algorithm as a million people liking it - you should just not interact with them at all. I had the same situation. And had the same anger and same tears (even more, cause I lost both). Here in Italy the situation is so difficult. You said your vet clinics help you with stuff that you need to be a rescuer. Here it's not the same, they can't help you. They do nothing. And for a girl who's still studying and not working is so difficult to be a rescuer... I'll work hard and do my best.
Thank you. We love you ❤

Skybrine Trust me. I'm trying so hard to change this situation. I take care of all the cats in my street, but the only thing I can do is give them food since vet are too expensive. I'm known as the "vet" of my street, I watch so many videos on RUclips. People abandon cats in my yard because of that. And no one wants a cat in their house, so I prefer them to stay in my yard instead of a stragers' yard. I'm really trying my best...

I told my parents I had heard a crying under our house and they said it was probably just the neighbors but then I heard scratching under our house and crying and so we looked under the house and we saw a kitten we left her with the mom until we figured out that the mom didn't want her so we basically rescued a cat or actually a kitten she was literally only a few weeks old really adorable a black cat she's grown and she was a lot of work for like for a while like about a week she just crying non-stop but the only time she wasn't crying when she was eating or sleeping but yeah we saved her from freezing to death from dying of hunger thirst and mom wanted nothing to do with her and I'm really happy we got her she was kind of hard to feed but we got through it

I want to recognize Kitten Lady for her amazing skills and fiercely loving heart in all that she does, always! The prospect of survival for kittens like Badger and Mink is very bleak, yet Badger survives because of Kitten Lady. Yes, it is tragic that Mink couldn't make it, yet hopeful for future kittens as it's heartening to see how much good has come in her memory. There are some people who will argue, "That's nature and nature is cruel," but I want to point out that cats and dogs, as we know them, are not wild animals, not even the feral ones. Humans domesticated dogs and cats and therefore, they deserve our care including having them spayed and neutered. If you love and care for a rescued dog and/or cat, thank you!

my dad was working at a military base in Illinois and we had gotten roughly 2 feet if not more of snow during the day. Dad went to work driving under a street in one of those hollow spots for patrol. He found two kittens in the snow soaked and freezing both near death. The orange sister was actually better off and was sitting on top of the black sister trying to keep her warm despite them being in a puddle of water surrounded in a mound of snow. My dad took them into the base rushing them under a powerful heating vent trying to get their body temperatures up. After work the orange one ran off going back to their mother and is still with them to this day she is actually expecting soon from what my dad says. My dad fearing for the black kittens life because she had yet to move nor warm up at all drove home texting me frantically to get a heating pad ready along with blankets and a heating bottle. Using both we were able to make her a heated temporary nest. Dad took her to the vet first to see if she could get some fluids. They tried charging us over 1000 dollars just to get her fluids. Seriously should saving a life cost so much? Dad brought her home and I stayed up for over 30 hours having to rub her chest, and keep both the pad and bottle heated up. By noon the next day after dad had work again so I stayed up all night to watch her. She started trying to walk around a bit and I was able to get her to drink some warm water and eat some dry food. I dozed off actually for a half an hour and found her in the bathroom all across the house. She got better despite some slight brain damage she is living to this day celebrating being 7 to 8 months old. And soon will be sprayed. She actually scared my stepmom several times because of how silent she still is to this day.

On 8/3/1998, a neighbors cat gave birth under another neighbors house. I saw Chynna (the mom) when I got home from work around 3 A.M. and she was clearly pregnant. When I left the house to return to work that same day at 4 P.M., Chynna had clearly had the babies.
When the kittens, wherever they were, waa 6 days old, the other neighbor called me. Please come over, there is a problem.
I rounded the corner of their home and I heard the distinct sounds of newborn kittens!
One look at the calico & I instantly knew they were Chynna's babies. The other kitten was a black & white tuxedo.
I told Danny to put them back where he found them. That they were Chynna's and she was probably getting food.
I had had that day off from work and was going to get some mulch at Wal-Mart to do gardening.
As I drove out of the subdivision, I looked to the left to make sure no one was coming and my heart sank...a calico colored body was in the road!! I drove over to the body and saw it was Chynna!!
So instead of mulch, I got bottles, Kitten Formula, goats milk, & baby shampoo.
I returned and went back to where the babies were. I had to give them both baths as they were covered in fleas & sand.
Once they were dried, I mixed bottles and both of them ate.
Since they needed feeding, and besides when they ate, slept, I took them into work with me. Everyone took turns feeding.
I had a (neutered) male Rag Doll cat named Benji who became a surrogate to them. I fed them and he did the rest.
By the time they were 12 weeks, I had them spayed and shots started.
The tuxedo was Samantha & the calico was Isabella!!
They became part of the family!! Sadly, on 12/30/2010, Samantha suffered a major heart attack while playing with her Christmas toys.
Isabella just turned 20 YEARS old in August!!
She cannot jump up on things like she used to, but the sofa is always her favorite spot!!
We are shooting for birthday 21 and then 22!! She is so sweet!!

    Roxy
She was found on the street under my moms car. I don't really know that much about this story cause I was very young. She is a very happy and healthy cat.
    Grayson
My moms friend was taking a walk, when she heard small meows. She found out that the meows were coming from a storm drain, luckily workers were close so she told the workers and they got
the cat out and gave it to my moms friend. My moms friend couldn't keep the cat because she had just gotten a dog, so she gave him to my mom. His head was to big for his body, he was so little and skinny.
Now he is a very healthy fat cat.
Those are my stories, thank goodness I have two cats. Mink had a short life but her last moment was the best moment of her life, she passed away warm and loved. What matters most is she wasn't alone when she passed.

Ever since I was young, I've had some comunity cats who I feed. They aren't exactly my pets, but their family has lived with us for lots of generations. Most of them leave, but some stay and have kittens who then grow up,and this is how it's been for a few years. Our most recent cats, and the once we curently have are an old cat and her daughter. The young one has only had 3 litters and she abandoned most of her kittens. The old one however is such a good mother, she's always tried to keep her kittens safe and she has had many many kittens. Since she's always been very small, we never really noticed the problem, but she was emaciated. She was giving all of the nutrients she got to her kids, and since she wasn't eating a lot, she was suffering. After her latest litter, she didn't even had the strenght to meow! This is when I convinced my mom to get her and her daughter neuterd. I knew she would die if I didn't. Only a weak after, this cat looked complitely different!! I have never seen her is such a good shape! She looks like a normal cat her age should!! Every time I see her, I am amazed at how great she looks!! Spaying and neutering cats doesn't only help the kittens but the cats themselves!!! I really hope more people do it!

I found this video because our cat (who is not fixed and spent time outside) gave birth to surprise kittens. We used to joke about her maybe not being able to get pregnant and that we had been lucky for six years.
This video made me regret that joke so much.
I’m so grateful that she chose to have her babies in our house and is a good mama.
I’m so sad that we lost one of the babies who was born with a defect that MAY have been prevented had we known.
Mama and kittens are getting fixed as soon as they are able.

hi Hannah, theres a abandoned house down the street from my house and there are 2 kittens who live there. The mother is very young and there have been no traces of the dad. They have been living under the house there whole lives and someone next door to the kittens explained to us how the people who used to live there dumped the cat and just left. The kittens look around 6 weeks old. My sister and I have been feeding them wet food and we put some warm kitten formula in a little bowel. We have called the RSPCA but they can't accept the kittens or mum until they have been tamed. Preventing too many kittens beeing born by wild living cats is easy: It's working in my country really well. Every male and female cat which lives free could be brought to a vet, castrated or sterilized for free and after it's healed it's set free again. They can live their live like they're used to but there won't be any new cats born from this. In my city we reduced the free cat's with this method by almost 90%.

Sadly Veterinarians in America are very expensive. If you take in a stray for Neutering/Spaying you are easily dishing $200

linkLoverAG in Florida it costs about 20$ for a full grown cat to be spayed, and because it was a rescue group 15$ for 4 kittens to be spayed.

I am crying and this was just beautiful, I am so touched and this inspired me to tell my rescue story to one of my baby kitties. Nala is her name, she was found in a grinder just about to slip and get chopped along with her brothers and sisters, one of the workers caught her. She was then token out and put into a box, no one could find her mom, no where. My step dad volunteered to take her home since nobody wanted to. She now is the most playful and bouncing baby kitten ever now at 3-4 months, I think back to the day when she was only 2 weeks. I enjoy what u do and I will do the same as my step dad did in the future

Yes, her brothers and sisters were unfortunately unable to safe. They were chopped up, by the time the workers got there, she almost slipped along with them but were luckily able to catch her. I always believe everyone gets a second chance and this was hers although her broke hers and sisters are in heaven and waiting for her but not just yet ❤️
