    Good simple explanation for those not tech savvy. I own several computers; as I love building desktops and sometimes sell to friends. For those with limited desk-space I recommend a mini PC that can be VESA mounted , so if it needs upgrading it can be done separate from the display, better than AIO and can be very powerful.
    Also when buying a laptop - don't buy cheap you will be disappointed! Usually a mid grade works for many years i5/R5, 8-16Gb memory and 512Gb-1Tb ssd is a good start in 2023.
    Keep up the great content.

    For the average user that must make a choice if your job does not involve travel, I recommend buying a desktop system. If you are away from home then maybe a laptop will work best. Of course, I use both. I use a self-refurbished Dell Latitude 3540. I use an M.2 SATA SSD in a case for my OS and I have a 2 TB SSD in a caddy in place of my optical drive. I have used that laptop for my job all over the world. One problem I have with laptops is the more they run the more dust gets clogged up on the small fans that blow over the heatsink. About every 8 months to a year I have to take my Laptop down and clean the fan. When I am at home my laptop is off unless I am copying work product to it for a job. So I won't get involved in any debates about what is best. For my purposes, I prefer a desktop. My laptop is just a work tool.

      @@AskYourComputerGuy I have not watched all your content, so if you have already covered this then forgive me. Have you ever thought about a video about how a laptop is more susceptible to heat than a desktop? Those air channels are small because of the compact design of the laptop. What makes this insidious is most all the processor makers design protection into the chip to start to throttle the chip as it gets hotter. Over time finally, the user starts to notice the laptop is not running as fast as it once did. In some ways, it is like a frog in the water. If you toss a frog into hot water it will jump out. You put a frog in cold water and slowly raise the temp the frog will not jump out and will finally expire. My GF used to have an HP G7 laptop. Like clockwork every 6 months or so she would hand it to me to fix. I have to literally strip it to the MB to clean the fan. Christmas 2021 I bought her a new laptop.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  Год назад

      I touched on that in this video, specifically because of the compact nature of laptops and AIO's. Haven't made a video specifically about that issue, but it's not a horrible idea ;)

    I like my desktop. Desktops for best value & support for the money. Because I can live a few hours or days without a pc if I have to while I am out. Laptops while convenient to a point, are too expensive & upgrade restrictive. All-in-one's are what I call a novelty pc, because like laptops they overheat easier, they can get expensive to not only buy but repair, the touch screen can get dirty fast, and they are a PITA to repair.

Fast forward, now im 38, 2 daughters, and completely lost on what I need. Looking into doing some BASIC video editing and work stuff, but don't want to be confined to the small screen of a laptop. However, I like the versatility of a laptop. How much ram? Speed? Like holy crap man. Programs need so much power these days.

    Hello,
    I'm a senior citizen, but I have built and repaired a few computers since the 1990s. Additionally; I have been a hobbiest programmer for decades as well. I even sold two programs to local businesses.
    My weak area is internet protocols. I have asked around and no one has been able to explain to me how when using WiFi at my local coffee shop while using a vpn AND going to a HTTPS address (online gun and ammo store) the WiFi STILL can identify and block my access to the URL. Other sites work fine (amazon, youtube, reddit etc.)
    Can you explain to me how they are able to identify and block my access to a "forbidden" URL despite my use of both a VPN and HTTPS. Also how to defeat whatever they are doing?
    I've thought about trying TOR over VPN or VPN over TOR, but before all that hassle I was hoping you could help me out.
    Thank You

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  Год назад

      That part is actually simple. Routers (such as the free public Starbucks wifi) can block ANY URL, regardless of how you connect. A VPN is great, but that just masks your physical location. Your web search still has to go through the free wifi network to get to the VPN and then out to the internet. If it's blocked at the router (by URL or most likely by "type", (gambling sites, porn, etc), the router will simply not allow the data to come back to you because of those blocking controls. Not every free wifi has those types of security protocols in place, so you could simply just go elsewhere and try a different network and perhaps they don't have any such restrictions.

      I`m retired, so don`t need a laptop for work. I play games that are best enjoyed as sessions rather than short bursts of a few minutes here and there. The same applies for my photography and any wordprocessing etc. I do, and any online shopping etc. I do can wait untill I am at home.
      I can use my phone whilst out and about to access anything I need to on the net etc.
      So, for me, personally, it`s a desktop all the way. I understand a laptop will be the preferred option for others though.

      G'day, hope you are doing well. Our computer is an old All-In-One that our son installed Linux on, when Windows 7 stopped being supported. He also replaced the hard-disk, but now that is also failing.
      I saw the effort he went to replacing the hard-disk and decided I'd never buy one again. To me, a laptop is just a small All-In-One!
      However, we are looking to downsize and maybe move into an apartment and we'd like to spend more time with our only grandchild, who is an 8 hour drive away. The Mrs thinks a laptop makes more sense. I'm still leaning towards a desktop. Maybe "Happy Wife, Happy Life"? 😊

    Very interesting sir but please answer my question: why does every user has to transform himself into a repairman as soon as he buys a computer. When you buy a TV, are you obliging yourself to be a TV repair man? When you buy a watch? Why should I expect the costs of repairability? Seems like being a self repair man is not expected from a computer buyer, it's an obligation, it's mandatory, it ccomes with the territory. And computers are not the most expensive things to buy. TV's, smart phones, smart watches...

    • @AskYourComputerGuy

      You don't have to be. You can just go buy another one. But you also don't store personal data on your TV or your watch, either. So there's that 🤷‍♂️

    Ok I'll just posit my opinion...and for me?...I think you need one of each.
    A desktop is good for "Long Term" computing...the long hours of coding and learning and programming, maybe taking a break with some Netflix etc. Its reliable because its got superior cooling when compared to a laptop. If you're the kind who builds their own?...then it will have the amount of RAM, the correct size SSDD, and the custom lights and tricks that YOU want.
    Then there's laptops not anywhere near as powerful as a desktop, its got limited space in the body, its got limited cooling, and can't go "all night long" like the desktop can....BUT.....its PORTABLE....so if you're headed out to California to visit the folks?...you don't have to worry about trying to connect to come remote cloud server, you can code away on your laptop test it right there and then?...and connect or not when you're ready. With a laptop you can "work" in a Starbuck's.....an open air park.....in a food court in a mall.....off the docks by the bay etc. So laptops also have value. Do you need one with an i9....a vapor chamber...and a 120Hz screen display?....not unless you're into CAD or you prefer to game on the go. If not?...then 16GB of RAM...an i7 / Ryzen 7.....and a 1TB SSD should be just fine for your laptop needs.
    Also if you're not familiar?....I would definitely say you should get familiar with the Linux operating system...it could help you extend the life of your laptop or desktop for a few DECADES! LoL!
